The character shouldn't be "the gay". It should be its own person. Being gay should just be one odd detail about who the character is. And probably most importantly, it shouldn't just come out of nowhere. If there's no reason to mention it, it isn't worth mentioning. In fact, I would argue it is detrimental to mention, as it just lowers the value of the trait at that point. Now you're pointing out things that don't actually play a role in who the character is, what its personality is. You're just listing extra bits that are ultimately worthless outside of scoring points for 'diversity'.
