the built in ones just aren't very good. Get an SVHS deck and take what you can get.

OPs game looks OK but it doesn't look as good as it could. There's an odd blend between background/secondary and primary colors for sprites. Makes it hard to discern information and ultimately makes the game have a cluttered visual look.

That said, there's plenty of Japanese games with great pixel art still being made today. I think the problem is just in the west where pixel art and minimalist art is used interchangeably for 2D games.

It has objectively shitty graphics. The sprites are poorly made, especially the player character. Pretty sure he has a fucking two frame walking animation. The color palette is poorly chosen, and everything blends into the background. This is more of a problem because the retarded devs made the weapon effects extremely flashy compared to the shitty sprites, so you have awful shit like missiles that cover large parts of the screen just for the sake of being flashy and covering up your and the enemies' sprites.

When someone claims that Risk of Rain has good sprite art, you know they're completely fucking clueless and also objectively wrong. It's a game that is both poorly made from a standalone sprite perspective and when considering how the graphics affect gameplay. Just look at the clusterfuck in the screenshot in . That's not even close to how bad it can get, even. Good spritework doesn't mean throwing as much shit on the screen as you can without consideration for how it affects visibility.

I love the game but let's not pretend the sprite work is anything more than just enough to distinguish the player and monsters from the environment (and sometimes failing at it).
