Let's look at it this way in the 50s and 60s there was a genuine counter-culture here and genuine communist movements and the minimum wage was higher then it is today.

Were there more Third Worlders providing surplus-labor then there are now to finance their lifestyles? No, in fact, there were less and the technology used by the industrial areas of the developing world was primitive compared to today's technology and often obsolete even for its time. One of the good things about a "sweatshop" is that you don't have to invest in constantly keeping the machines new and up-to-date in order to make profits.

The size of the American labor market grew but the portion of industrial/productive workers is of a comparable size as it was in 1979. The percentage of workers engaged in manufacturing is less but the number is about the same. At the same time productivity has exploded thanks to new technology and yet the average American worker isn't getting richer. Now, that alone makes it unlikely that the Third World is making a lot of profits for the American capitalists but their sharing more of them with the working class, they are not sharing any more of them then they did in the past.

It's easy to pin this swing on a triumphalist welfare state in the mid-20th century but of course its wrong since the US had a larger industrial base then any country bar the USSR after WWII. Likewise, wages are at their lowest to the Great Depression and I was surprised to find out that weekly wages in the depression for factory workers often wasn't that much lower then what your typical wage-slave at McDonalds gets adjusted for inflation. I don't think I need to remind anyone that the colonial world was oppressed in a far more brutal and direct way in the 30s then it is today and was even more impoverished and underdeveloped.

Few historians paint a rosy picture of Depression-era America and labor in this time period, so if a significant portion of workers today get paid on a level similar to the 30s when you consider that there's been almost 90 years of technical advance since then you have to wonder where it all went? Productivity is much higher then in the 60s yet many workers are actually poorer in take-home income. Cost of living and rentier costs are also increasing.

Yet right now, the bourgeoisie's of the Third World and the imperialist world are also wealthier then they have ever been. Almost as if their not in some kind of tacit agreement to keep the workers in the global north fat and happy,

In most K-12 schools, students are taught to react, not reflect. They are also saturated in sensational media from cradle to grave. Combined, those forces create consumers, not citizens.

The chinese government (local level) are usually the ones who tell manufacturers what to do in regards to how many people they're employing and what they're making. The iron/steel industry is a good example of how the gov basically forced the companies to keep production levels at very uneconomical levels just to keep people employed.

The chinese labor economy is shrinking currently due to 1. they're out of peasants to abuse and 2. the 1 child policy. Wages have gone up and worldwide demand has gone down.

Chines manufacturers aren't really moving to the US because it's cheaper but more so because they have greater ability to control their business here. They don't have government officials backseat driving so they can boost whatever metrics they need to get boosted in their district so they can get promoted to the next level.

The increasingly autonomization of factory work also makes most of the reasons to have a factory in China pointless. The cost of labor for a few skilled employees will not matter that much in comparison between china and the US. The closeness to the rest of the supply chain matters less when there are going to be a smaller amount of orders due to declining global demand. The lack of regulations stops mattering once most of the work is being done by machines since it becomes good business to follow said regulations to prevent breakdowns. You can have have broken workers due to not worrying about safety codes but when most of the work is being done by machines then it's better to follow said codes. And then of course there is the benefit for managers being able to manage as they wish instead of complying with silly demands from the government like 6% growth every year or w/e (though chinese growth numbers are completely fake due to all the lower level numbers theyre based off of being fake too).
