Probably because that's just how Telltale handles the majority of their licensed games. They either make it a prequel(that doesn't matter) or a side-story(that doesn't matter). And they almost always make it so you play a character who would make sense to interact with characters from the series but were of no consequence.
Which is why a Telltale Dark Souls game where you play as Gwyn's advisor would make sense. Because from Dark Souls it's evident that if anyone did try to talk Gwyn down from it, they obviously failed. So they can make you feel like you're important even though it's quite obvious that nothing you can say or do will matter
