I think the game is definitely has merit as a horror game. The threat of jumpscares combined with game over makes sure that you have a feeling of dread and panic. The monster design are pretty good too transforming what should have been wholesome into something sinister and freaky.
Unfortunately, after a while, the difficulty of the game works against it. As you repeatedly die you start to know when jumpscares happen and the feeling of panic as you try to stave off the monsters becomes a chore instead. Then the game becomes flat and uninteresting to play.
I think its important to keep in mind that this was meant to be a cheap 5 dollar game so the shallowness of the game is expected. Its a pity Scott failed to expand the depth of the series with fnaf 2 and sister location being more of the same
