What made anime in the 80's so aesthetic? At first I thought it was just the shading, how they used more than just two tones and weren't afraid to use the color black for it. But that was mostly reserved for high budget OVA's so that can't be it. Even simple stuff like Dragon Ball looked way better than its modern counterpart.

Is it the detail painted backgrounds? Does the animation itself just look less rigid being hand drawn on cels instead of in flash? Why does that shit look so much more appealing?

the difference here is animation. modern anime is often much more animated with facial expressions and actual movement. 80s anime would have many high detail still pictures. like closeup of a detailed eye while a guy is talking so they dont have to animate the mouth.

2011 version was an alright adaptation. However, it lacks the grit, shading, designs, and the musical score that the 1999 version had, especially with the Yorknew Arc.

I first saw A-ko on VHS rented from Blockbuster, so the dubbed voices tickle my nostalgia bone. But for archivers like you, anything.

The problem is that Rumiko Takahashi is creative enough to come up with really interesting characters and neat premises.. but too much of a stubborn cunt to actually do anything interesting with them. The manga was a better ride overall, but even still, it's a constant status quo reset every few episodes, because Takahashi was terrified that she might lose her gorillions of gook-shekels if she deviated from her formulaic story structure at all.

Say you wanted to do it now. How would you pay for room and board? Same goes for doujin-style computer games. It takes a fuckload of free time, and money. Devilman Lady was alright, but I kinda lost interest from after watching a few eps. Another show that I think that gets overlooked is, Video Girl Ai.
The one show that did that to me was the first episode Devil Hunter Yohko. The hotel scene was getting good, until the old lady ruined it by crashing into the hotel room with a motorbike, and getting rid of the demon that was mind controlling the guy who was about to fuck Yohko.

But nothing in the world matched the detail in a single screenshot of an old anime, even if it had relatively little motion. I don't see why Japan would give up a distinction like that.

escaflowne was an odd fucking show, i watched it a year or two back based loosely on memories of its short lived air on some western cartoon program. a lot more seinen than i remembered. Was the movie any good?

If you're a fan of the show, it's a decent film, but it cuts a lot of shit and development that you see from the anime series. The artwork and designs made by Nobuteru Yuki (the artist for Chrono Cross), and animation is pretty nice.
