the "original" has names changed, i guess to avoid copyright? Not sure, but the "corrected" version has the appropriate names. Video has some info.

I like it. Would have been cool to see

Who gives a fuck?

i did, always wanted to know where it would at least have gone

whats the tldr story?

Gordon gets cucked by the G-man.

HL-3 would no doubt be him chasing the G-man's organization wilhe battline combine on the side or such shit because now his shitty waifubait is supposed to be the "chosen one" but he dun want that i would guess. Unless they decided to pull the Adrian from Opposing Force as in 404 until further notice aka probably never ever.

the tl;dr is that humanity cannot defeat the combine because it is simply too big, powerful and widesrpead to combat. Even after acquiring the Borealis which can fuck with time and space. The ending is Gordon Freeman giving up the fight in a way that seems like it's a metaphor for Valve and how they've given up making actual fucking games and not just lottery machines with gameplay attached.

So how long before a group of autists make a Source mod with a story that happens to be strikingly similar to this and ends up getting bought by Valve and becoming the official HL3?

they've dropped everything and started immediately, user. when it will be released, however, is questionable. maybe another decade? that Element 120 game took the devs over 2 years to make

We already had this thread but whatever

...

Meh, could've probably be enjoyable if they had released this a year after Episode 2 like the original plan, but releasing this nowadays would be received as poorly as Duke Nukem Forever was.

...

believe it or not there was time when people did, and it was nice

We already have a thread:

fuck off back to playing tetris and owerwatch

yeah me too. it might have been fun

You're fucking kidding right? We've already had a shit load of threads about this.

0: Fallout
1: Nomanski
2: Elon Plus

3-9: study

He is Holla Forums. Bow to his sage.

It's full of retards discussing everything but HL

Anyway I'd have liked playing this… But too bad it's another cliffhanger, I really wanted to know more about the advisers, who is G-man and more

Is the VNN fag going to commit sudoku now? That game was the sole reason why his channel existed

...

I fucking wish.

Marc Laidlaw is the only person who still had a fucking spine and heart to not fuck with people…

The joy when the story finally closed.
The peace after the Steam Jew won't risk to ruin it, since without Marc Laidlaw it will worth dogshit for the old fags.
The happiness when you realize Adrian Shephard didn't got pozzed by Valve's cuckoldry.

This is good… isn't it?

...

This franchise and the writers behind it can go fuck themselves sideways. It was always shit, but you would think that with episode 3 they would AT THE VERY LEAST give us a fucking proper ending. But no, even if this game was to be released - it would have been yet another shitty and boring Half-Life episode that is roughly 9 hours long and is filled with abhorrent puzzles and a bullshit cliffhanger ending.

Fuck them.

I hope Gabe dies soon, along with his corrupt company full of greedy low-skill faggots.

It's pretty obvious that the original plan was to have three episodes and then do Half Life 3. It was retarded to expect any sort of resolution.

This is a new low for Valve. Everybody who still uses Steam at this point is a hardcore valvedrone and should be regarded as such.

This was written back when episode 2 had just released, why would you have expect the next episode to finish the story?

...

How the fuck else will I keep playing the games I have on steam?

To summarize, You bury Eli, you go to where the Borealis is, find a Combine Compound there instead, find Breen pseudo-alive as a slug person, potentially mercy kill him, find Mossman, find out the ship is phasing in and out of existence and that the coordinates was only where you thought it was going to be, get on the ship, start traveling through time and space and dimensions, Mossman and Alyx argue whether or not you should destroy the Borealis, Alyx decides to choose with her gun by shooting Mossman, you weaponized the ship, drive it straight into a Combine Invasion Prep area, G-Man takes Alyx away, the Vortugants take you away before the ship goes kablooey and either the resistance wins or loses.

By not listening to some arbitrary shit some fag on some forum said. People can still use Steam and form their own opinions on things. That user cannot, however.

Just quit buying from Steam. I still use Steam offline for games I bought a long time ago, but I pirate my games these days so it's not like my library is growing any bigger.

Also, this. Quit letting some stupid beta faggot on a dying website be your source of validation.

play stupid games win stupid prizes.
I'm Impressed by the driver keeping cool. even had windows open

...

It's not.

Imagine: It's 2007, Orange Box just released and you finished Episode Two, would you have really wanted Episode Three to have been the final game in the series that explains everything?

This guy is a fucking faggot who jacks off when valve launches a pointless ban wave.

Half-Life was dead the moment the main writer left the company. Story-telling games need to have the same (main) writer for ALL the games in the series, because otherwise you get Mass Effect. A writer cannot figure out another writer's world and characters, they don't have the important background details and understand a character's motives.

All the AAA games go to shit eventually because game companies don't understand that their original writers are fucking valuable, they are the most important people in their dev teams. The fact that they are treated like expendable fodder is retarded backwards thinking, anyone can replace the UI guy, anyone can replace the sound guy, the animators and so on, but you can't fucking replace writers and expect a good result later. A sequel of a good game with the same writer as the previous one has a very high chance of being as good as the previous game. Good sequels with a different writer are only exceptions.

TL:DR: A writer working on another writer's work is called fanfiction, it's almost always shit. That's why Half-Life is dead now.

Fallout 2 and New Vegas are exceptions. Although I'd be lying if I said Fallout 1 wasn't slightly more cohesive than Fallout 2.

I never feel sorry for these dumbasses who become street meat.

Well, there's also the fact Valve has little to no structure so everyone's not focused on any one project and just doing whatever.

this "fanfiiction" was written by the main writer himself though

Except it is something.

The what's left of half life. And it's straight from the writer.

He wasn't referring to the article. By "fanfiction" he meant a hypothetical Episode 3 written by someone else.

oh ok, it confused me for a bit there. thanks for clarifying

Most likely there was going to be more episodes beyond 3 to maximize the shekels.

You can tell this was his way of saying "Fuck you" to Valve. You can tell that he posted it out of spite since he posted it right after leaving the company along with every other person on the HL team. The stars lined up, and Gabe realized he doesn't own a game company anymore.

"b-but it might still-"

NO. Its fucking dead. Its been dead since Valve became a microtransaction company. Its over. Its gone and people need to wake the fuck up, the police are at the door and they found your missing uncles body in a barrel on a wasteland and hes been dead a longtime, you have good memories but hes gone and never, ever coming back.

Its time to get past denial or bargaining and reach acceptance.

Valve is a greedy microtransaction producing dev thats all they are. Why would they ever spend money making a single player game when they can shit out a thousand new hats for autists in a quarter of the time?

Oh no, the enemy is enormously vast, powerful, and utterly unstoppable. There's no hope left but our main character.

Okay, so someone else built this one weapon that will defeat the bad guys entirely, but they were killed before they could activate it and it's just been sitting around since then. Main character, fight your way through some minor skirmishes to activate this thing.

Unless you actually have the time and effort to do a long story where things can gradually be unravelled, a totally overwhelming enemy is always bullshit.

I'm just glad it's finally over

cash grabbing has destroyed this company from the inside
they stopped making games in 2012-2013

Always figured it'd be Alyx's fault in the end somehow.

in the end, it was niggers who brought the end of humanity.

...

Calling bullshit on that one. People often identify the very tone of a game with the sort of sound and music it has. There's a reason a lot of people felt Portal 2 didn't quite have the same tone of Portal 1, it was around then that Kelly Bailey had left the team.

VNN said in a video that "valve only released games for them to innovate the market"
AHAHAHAHAAHA
how much of a valvedrone do you have to be to think "shooty shooty with money gibbing lottery mechanics : global offensive" was innovative? lmao

Fallout 2 killed the series. Let's recap some of the "great" additions Fallout 2 brought into the series

>ghosts although, there were supernatural elements in 1, mainly the fortune teller in the boneyard and the Master, who can deal psychic damage
>so unfinished and buggy not even the first fucking town in the game has all the content it was supposed to have you were supposed to be able to catch the Dunton brothers for the cattle rustling by showing the radscorpion claws to the innkeeper, and with a high enough perception be able to identify the Duntons have just burned their own cattle mark over the original
I'm sure there's other stuff i don't even want to recall

Why don't they get someone else to make the game then?

thats what they have been doing since 2007
Portal, Left 4 Dead, CSGO, Dota 2 teams were all from companies they outsourced to at first until joining valve and then leaving(a lot of them joined and left once they couldnt get their projects going/approved)

You are my dude.

this really

...

Is this nigger retarded? You also got footage of you morons harassing him for no reason beforehand proving that it was justified

What are you talking about? It's not like it was a season pass and three episodes was the plan for a long time. Not everyone else's fault you and your kind are oblivious fucktards.

...

...

Half Life is the continuing story of one character, Fallout takes place over different generations in different timelines so its easier for new writers to write their stories into the universe.

...

Episode 3 was never promised to be the end of the series. Why would you want that anyway? If we loved in the good timeline where this game came out pre 2010, would you want that to be the end of Half Life? Would you want them never to make more?

...

Why would you not want Half Life 3 though? Assuming the series still held it's quality. Why are you so desperate to shut the door on something you enjoy?

I don't really get why people hate the cliffhanger ending so much.

I've always seen the idea of Gordon working for G-Man as a fun one. Kind of reminds me of Ranger from Quake, or Doom Guy. Doom Guy keeps killing demons in Hell, Ranger jumps from slipgate to slipgate destroying evil in different dimensions and Freeman would do pretty much the same kind of work but it would be assigned to him by G-Man. Easier to make sequels and basically makes all fan-made work (mods) somewhat canon.

Yeah, a better explanation of things would be nice but it's not necessary, I believe. Besides, I doubt they would be able to pull off something interesting anyway. Half-Life always had this sense of being grounded in reality, all the world-building is subtle and feels like it could happen in real life. Gordon Freeman and humanity traveling to Combine's homeworld to fight in a war would turn the series into some Star Wars garbage. Maybe it's just hard for me to imagine what possibly they could pull off to make Half-Life 3 to Half-Life 2 what Half-Life 2 was to Half-Life in terms of the story and the world. I don't want to take such risk, personally. Portal 2 is a good example of how easy it is to fuck up the interesting canon and turn it into a Big Bang Theory.

The original game gave you "infinitely expandable" research center to play with in your imagination, and the sequel gave you as much borderless City 17. Dunno about fan-fiction but mods had enough fun with just these two. Just go play some pre-2004 mods to see what people thought would happen after HL1. And, when I think about it, I never really liked Episode Two just for that – it had no interesting locations, nothing unique. I've seen generic forests, caves and mines in millions of other video games. Top secret laboratories and Eastern-European dystopian city after alien invasion? Not so much.

Sure, there might never be Half-Life 3 but you can always have your own spiritual successor about teleportation experiment gone wrong and mysterious men in black.

Fuck off, retard.

I always imagined Episode three would wrap up the Half Life 2 saga. Dr Breen would be dead, the Eastern European setting would be done, and most of those character's stories would be brought to a close. And then for Half Life 3 you take Gordon somewhere new. Maybe another timeskip. Maybe a different continent. Maybe an alien world.

We'll never see it because Valve makes more money with Steam sales and taking credit for other people's games. Not that, you know, Half Life is even close to relevant anymore. But then there could be a Team Fortress 3 or Left 4 Dead 3. But no. Not enough money in it. Sure they make huge profits and hire expensive talent to throw around ideas forever. But actually putting a game together - though almost certainly profitable - will never be as profitable as sitting on your ass and collecting X percent of PC game sales.

This is the kind of shit you get with a monopoly.

30%

Fuck off faggot, no one here likes your games or your company and no one has ever invested money to you for like a decade. Kill yourself

Yeah but they get 0% on non-steam game sales and a higher percent on games they publish. Didn't feel like doing the math. The point stands regardless.

What the fuck does it even mean? Just because someone doesn't put "faggot" after each word doesn't mean he's a Official. It just means they're older than 15. Try using something other than anime message boards, retard.

In 2007, no one wanted Half Life to end. We wanted more Half Life, because it was good. It would have been disappointing if Episode 3 was the definitive end of the series.

I just wanted to illustrate how much they make on every game.
Personal income tax in USA is 40% (^:

Oh I agree it's worth putting out there that every sale made on steam gives them almost a third of the cash. They could literally sit there doing nothing but keeping the servers alive and they'd continue getting insanely richer by the second. They're worth multiple billions of dollars. Shit, Valve alone could buy and fund development of all the dead franchises we know and love (and profit from it) but they won't because they wouldn't profit as much as they do now by fucking around.

The nigger ruins everything.

Fixed.

Then stop shilling for the worst way to end a game you fucking retard
Fuck episodic releases. Half life 2 didn't answer jackshit, just punched you in the face and rolled the credits. Same goes for 2 episodes. Do you want this shit to become the norm? Have more and more games with cliffhanger endings just so the autismo publishers can justify making a centillion sequels every year non-stop? It's already bad with Life is Tumblr being praised as a good franchise despite the abhorrent story, gameplay and cliffhangers.
No it fucking isn't and never was

I guess I just don't care about the story that much. Just give me more new levels, weapons and gimmicks and wrap it all up in a nice package of updated engine.

Basically, everything Breen said was right. Humanity stands no hope against the combine and at the best case scenario they will be fighting them for a long and painful time. Humanity could've survived and maybe even thrived as they were integrated into the combine empire but they decided to essentially cause a prison riot that will accomplish nothing in the grand scheme of things

In essence, fuck you, fuck your hope, just give up.

tl;dr Everything you ever did was for nothing and you will never win, also everyone dies because reasons.
Don't forget to pre-order

Half Life isn't about answers. The plot is just a framework on which to hang fun gameplay sequences.

That would be fine if it chose to have just gameplay and not take itself so seriously.
But these dumb fuckers have created a lore and left many questions unanswered. The community wants a sequel that will end the trilogy - but it will never come, because Valve doesn't give jackshit.

They should do a really game where the entire half life series turns out to be a dream that Gordon was having.

Like a final fuck you to the fans.

...

Its a video game. Pretty much everything valve did with it was as a test bed for new ideas in game play and story telling. Turns out their experiments were pretty successful.

That's basically what the games are though. Several hours of walking through levels, shooting things and solving puzzles. Plot mostly relegated to one or two lines spoken, or some background detail that's easily missed. I'm not against learning who exactly the G-man is, but lets not pretend the bare bones plot is worth more than the actual games.

Sometimes its great when the mystery isnt explained, and Episode 3 evidently ended in such a gloomy way that HL3 could have picked up from any direction.

I used to have such a boner for alyx when I first played half life 2. It was impossible to find good porn of her though.

Are we getting raided again? What's with massive influx of normalfaggots lately? Is cuckchan leaking again? Can't they fuck off to some other site?

Sometimes people do just like things.

...

everyones post automatically means they're a new fag while shit posting about the company you hate while posting anime reaction pics totally means you're an old fagright fellow cuckchanner i mean h8channer XD

The first half-Life didn't answered a thing but everyone was happy with it. Because (sit down child, this is will shock you) there are stories when the reader/player not as retarted as you and has enough mental power to figure out the end. Surprise, surprise you unbearable virgin fag!

Go back to reddit and be a nigger there, but stop trying to fit in this hard!

Every half life game Valve has made has ended on a cliffhanger. Because the plan was always for them to continue with the series.

If you don't like that, and would rather they give their games actual endings only for them to go "haha we lied, there is more to this story" then that's fine. But acting like it's a surprising insult when Valve were planning to end episode 3 the same way they've ended every Half Life game is stupid.

fixed. storycucks need to be gassed

It was on page 8 when I linked it, retard.

Also if Mark would RAISE THE FUCKING BUMP LIMIT then we wouldn't have threads dying off at 300 posts only to cause duplicate threads to be made too early because people don't want to follow the rules.

I can't believe even with this there are retards who actually think Half Life 3 will happen when the project was cancelled years ago and all of the talent that made Half Life left in 2013.

Episode 3 was cancelled, we knew that ages ago, and the plot release is just the final nail in the coffin. Gabe has said they are in fact working on a game in the HL universe right now, so it's probably a VR shooting gallery or some shit. Not "Half-Life 3" though.

Portal is set in the Half Life universe.

True, but considering they didn't even want Portal 2 to have portals in it, I don't think they plan on making another Portal.

Watch it happen.

I wanted to make a quick reply, but noticed if I said one thing I had to explain a chain of thought for it to make sense.
I wouldn't call it cliff hanger. It was open ended. Cliffhanger would be if they left the characters hanging from a cliff and nothing else had been resolved. Which is what HL2 did.

This is true, but the problem wasn't JUST the fact it was a cliffhanger ending, it was the fact that they "really focused and cared about the story" but forgot to actually tie up any loose ends for Half-life 2, while HL1 was pretty much self contained, its ending, felt like an ending. HL2:EP2 did a MGS5 where it just fucking stopped.

Half-life 1 plot of "Get the fuck out of here", and "Close those fucking portals" where resolved. They where simple, but resolved. Gordon was left in limbo, but that was an accepted fate since he had done A, "Got the fuck out of there" and B, "Closed all those portals by killing space fetus". G-Man coming up to you say "all according to my plan" was just the cherry on top, but it didn't really matter. He was an exposition dump and a sequel hook, but you could remove him entirely and the ending with him with Gordon teleported outside with Barney and a few scientist and have them spout out things like "Oh shit you did it, now lets get the fuck out of here, I wonder if escaping government kill squads is something I can list as a skill, eh Gordon?".

To avoid making a really long rant about half-life 2 short comings, to put it short it did not resolve anything with maybe one or two exception. Gordon got shit moving, but you didn't see how anything got resolved. The plot was much different from "get the fuck out of here" plot HL1 had. HL2 had alien corporations and entire planet occupation plot which didn't really get resolved after killing Breen. You blew up a really big fucking building, and that was suppose to again stop the fucking portals from working. That what was implied at the end of HL2. Episodes 1 and 2 though said, yea, that didn't do shit, but please start fucking again, you can have babies again. Then they killed the black old plot device to making it seem important. The only thing Gordon did in HL2 was blow up an alien erection building that let everyone start fucking again, and before you could do the thing you wanted to do since the first damn game.

What happen with that occupation force? What happen with that rebellion? Is that alien fleet coming? Did everyone start fucking for more babies? Is Earth going to recover. Did the fucking portals stop? Did I Win?

Sure the game and gameplay is all there, and the plot is an excuse plot, but it attempted to have a story. If the gameplay sucked ass no one would give a damn thats for sure. However they wasted money on tech to make you "care about the characters" and got a writer to write a script, filled with crisis and conflict, and above all else, making that a fucking selling point. Hell it was on the back of the box. Fuck, it was part of its titles "Episode". They wanted people to care. Then they spent 10 years fucking off in a corner making hats.

Half-Life: The Card Game

This comment made me smile.

Your optimism is commendable user, but it won't happen. The best we can hope for is a free mod/game to be released with slight tweaks to the names to avoid copyright lawsuits.

F

Reminder that if you've ever bought a skin or hat then this is your fault

how the fuck does that work

we live in a world there is a Shenmue 3 but never ever a Half Life 3.

People who say this usually have the worst taste

This. No Kelly Bailey (Or Marc Laidlaw) then it's not really Half Life. Just like how that new bladerunner movie is guaranteed bullshit because Vangelis isn't on it.
Can you imagine a timeline where hats didn't happen or people weren't retarded enough to buy them.

You'd think news about Half Life would become an insta-sticky on Holla Forums, but I guess ya'll niggas don't love video games like you used to.

...

this isn't reddit, you aren't required to suck half lifes dick here

valve's been dead for a long time dude. you want to talk about blizzard games next, or star wars anything?

I like video games that exist.

W E W L A D

No wonder this game didn't get made, the writers are idiots

Hell even Star Trek Enterprise in the far far future they have time wars, the enterprise J and other ships of its class are fitted with far advanced technology developed by Voyager crew to be able to detect and stop breaches in time caused by tampering

Again, I'm glad this game didn't get made, turning Alyx into a mary sue and then not even knowing what to do with a device that breaks the laws of reality? Jesus christ

And 1st one was an okay shooter at best. 2nd one was mediocre overglorified engine demo.
Half-Life was never important.

You're the kind of fag that puts both half-lifes in any top # video games just because you think it's required, aren't you?

What's wrong with ghosts, magic and supernatural elements?

Fuck off vorg.

I was surprised it wasn't myself, personally, the story to HL3 getting leaked is pretty goddamned big. Instant "lel valve is shit you don't have to dick-ride them anymore" contrarianism prolly explains why though.

You're welcome to explain how HLs were any step forward for fps games.

>>>/4cuck/

>>>/plebbit/

In and of themselves they weren't, they could be considered tech demos for their engines and what those engines can do rather than anything huge on their own. HL1 is often described as "Quake with a storyline" for instance, and the train sequence at the very beginning was pretty fancy stuff at the time. HL2 however was the genesis of console shooters as we know them and pulled off in-game cutscenes the best, even if it still amounts to being able to fuck about with some props while Alyx and Eli talk. HL2 was certainly a more mediocre game than HL1 on the whole (and more blatantly a tech-demo via the Gravity Gun) and I'm still more interested in all the scrapped beta content than I am in HL2 as a final product, but this is comparing HL1 and HL2 directly as games instead of pretending they, and not Goldsrc/Source, were the leaps forward.

So if you know those games weren't second coming of fps christ why are you surprised that anons don't give a fuck?

Big game news, HL3 or Episode 3 has been anticipated for a decade or longer and something truly related to it got released. Also I don't buy for a second they don't care when they have to walk into a thread and tell me they don't care instead of doing something wild like ignoring the thread and letting it sink to the last page. "I care so little I'll make sure the thread doesn't die!"

Boy, will liberals ever learn?

Later than manlets.

at this point, half life 3 has been a meme for longer than the entire half life series actually existed

people gave up and stopped caring a long time ago

I just fucking realized Mark Laidlaw is full of shit and that ending is impossible.

Portal happens relatively around the same time as HL2, maybe even a while before. Portal 2 happens 200 or so years later, and in the end you're deposited into a lush field, pretty much confirming the combine have been kicked off earth and earth has had time to regrow. At the very least, even if the time skip at the end is short enough to both defeat the combine and have earth be restored, it means its not actually open ended at all and the resistance does somehow defeat the combine

If you try to make sense out of the "Valve universe" you'll do so many mental gymnastics you could join a circus

I'm in the middle of my half life 2 run if any of you faggots want to remember the good times.

twitch.tv/fatfronk

Shenmue 3 is just a kickstarter scam

There is nothing left here, just steam and the other withered souls.

Why did Valve abandon us? What did we do wrong?

Not
Ok.
Problem?

Of course.

You let them become jews. They slowly but surely turned form game dev to publishing, and from game updates to selling skins and creating fake markets for people to gamble on.

It could of been stopped but it's overwhelming success led to this eventuality, the driving income of a company naturally begins to shape that company. The situation is slightly different but it's a simple cycle that's been seen and explained before.

There was that one decent model of her that replaced the hostages that you could download off of NOSTALGIA BITCHSLAP csbanana.com

This plot outline was written before Portal 2 was written, people seem to be forgetting this was what was planned right after they had finished Episode 2.

Honestly your bigger problem is you're still trying to make it so Portal 2 fits in the Half Life universe. Aperture Science got so comically overblown and stupid (yes a company that invented a device that could revolutionise the transport industry would totally go bankrupt) that it makes more sense in the fucking TF2 universe than in the Half Life one.

That's because Cave Johnson consumed a steady diet of paintchips and lemon grenades.

...

Nah Aperture in Portal 2 just makes absolutely no sense no matter how you look at it, it was consistently described as being able to develop and manufacture highly-advanced equipment in spite of hemorrhaging money so badly they had to use their own employees as test-subjects and often couldn't pay those employees. Same for being unable to afford the huge amount of moon rocks necessary for the white paint but buying them anyway, or revealing they'd tried activating GLaDOS several times and each and every single time she'd tried to kill them all. Guy was right saying it'd fit in better with TF2 than it would Half-Life, its tone and mobius-strip of backwards logic necessary for Aperture to make consistent sense is pretty similar to the TF2 comics. Didn't Pinkerton work on Portal 2, come to think of it?

Yeah, back in the day everything was shitty gmod ragdoll screenshots. Even teenage me didn't want to masturbate to that.

More like Steam sales killed episode 3.

They didn't. They gave the consumers exactly what they wanted. paid gamebanana skins. The amount of money they from from virtually no work is more insane than any of us can imagine. Nobody wouldn't do what they did in their position and if you think you wouldn't then you think of yourself too highly. It's entirely the consumers fault.

In other words, hats killed ep 3.

Why should I care even slightly?

This.

Fuck Gabe.

You almost have to love Jobs' lack of self awareness about marketing ten years after that interview. That interview also confirms Apple always wanted to cater to the pretentious tech illiterate arts crowd.

why do hl autists want this so badly, it's obviously never going to happen.

It's pretty obvious who he is anyway. A representative of an enemy of the Combine who see Earth as a resource to be used in their war against them. They introduced the energy crystals to Black Mesa because they needed to open a portal to bring the war to Earth. They pick out outstanding individuals such as Freeman to be their primary weapons, and also supply the resistance with arms.

Does that mean the vortigaunts are bad guys?

This isn't the first time this version of the script's been leaked, I remember watching some shitty fanmade HL3 intro cutscene on youtube years ago where they crash-land in antarctica.

More than anything else, I'm disappointed that that was all there was to it in the end.

I knew this day was coming. It is good that Laidlaw wrote the story like he wanted and finally ended the blue-balling of a generation. The transcript is written with the characters names being obscured and genders switched around, possibly as a workaround to copyrights, so he was working of his own accord. Whatever it is Valve was planning, he just put them in a tough spot.

Laidlaw basically revealed how a possible EP3 was going to go forward. If Valve was planning on doing anything with the series, now they either need to bury it for good or come up with an entirely new idea for it. Coming out and saying they will abandon the series wouldn't make much of a difference, only a few grognards would get angry but it won't be enough to hurt Steam sales in the least anymore. It has already been 10 years so I'm guessing Valve didn't plan on HL being their last fail-safe, so that theory is also crossed out. Most likely they will bury it, and a small part of the internet will cry out only to be left alone and forgotten as relics of a bygone era.

All-in-all, HL2 looks like a passion project, it's story being modular enough that it wouldn't be any grand epic but more of a testing ground for neat ideas with the story as a backdrop. It doesn't look like Valve was hoping on making any real money after EP2, it looks to me like it got put on hold for bigger projects and the HL series accidentally fell between the cracks as the original staff got older and more manpower got diverted to other, more profitable projects.

Reading the transcript didn't leave me hollow, because I already knew what to expect and it is very much the quality I recognize as being HL. It paved the way for a possible 4th entry, but that is a manic dream. It, same as Portal, had a distinct grounded feel to it. Portal 2 was a complete side-step, maybe even fanfic compared to to Portal 1's tone and pace which I didn't like in the least.

The wait is over. It didn't have to end like this, but here it is.You lived long enough to read how EP3 would end. We can finally be at peace.

Closest we've gotten is Breengrub's implication that the Advisors are intensely psychic to the point they can dictate what form they take after metamorphosis, "psychically imprinting upon their own genes", so G-man may or may not be an Advisor that's assumed a humanoid form. Either way he manipulates the same "Vortessence" that the vortigaunts themselves do as shown by his being blocked by those vorts that snorted bug-paint and got a psychic buzz, though "vortessence" might just be their own translated term for a psychic aether or even the underlying fabric of the universe.

Ehhhh G-man "supplied" Freeman but that was as far as his actual involvement with the Resistance. Resistance was fucked since they were living off of food and weapons stolen from Combine outposts they'd snuck into or somehow managed to overpower.

Maybe. Breengrub implied they were working to their own ends.

I love how dark and hopeless the ending is. So refreshing compared to other titles, especially with how the Borealis ended up essentially useless after all that hyping up and the fact that the heroes made the wrong decision completely fucking over humanity in the process, the human resistance at its absolute best was just a minor itch to the combine. Are there any other games out there with the balls to go full BAD END?

Who is this q.t? Just hit me with the manga name please, even I will be able to find it from there.

I wish he backed up and rammed the rest of the faggots down, but that'd end in a worse lawsuit.

It's the current year, old man. It's gonna be Duke Nukem Forever'd at this point.

grow some balls and call a jew a jew

If you want to see how different games go from concept to completion, look at the fucking Doom bible. Or read about their Quake concept. Those two games started out very different from how they ended.

Doom was originally going to be a six episode game featuring a cast of 4 characters, NPCs and helpers, and a guy who's name was "Buddy Dcote" which was shorthand for "Dies at conclusion of the episode," with his death in chapter meaning to give you impetus to want to complete chapters 2 through 6.

Quake was meant to be what Daikatana ended up becoming, and we all saw how fucking Daikatana went. And we all saw how Quake ended.

Video game writing, especially in a first-person shooter franchise, can be very much just fluff. As John Carmack described it, story in a video game is like story in a porno, you expect it to be there, but it's for the most part pretty fucking trivial.

I don't know why people go so fucking gaga over having Half-Life "completed." Considering how different Ep1/Ep2 was from HL/HL2, were you prepared to have GabeN explain to you in a commentary bubble why Half-Life 2 Ep 3/Half-Life 3 was so fucking very different from the other games?

If you really want to see a conclusion to things, consider making it yourself. Valve has shown already that they're more than happy to let you, just so long as you don't call it "Half-Life" to imply some form of official status.

Halflife died with 2

Not even surprised. HL 1 was the only good game Valve made.

If Doom-guy had died at the end of every episode it would fit in thematically 100%

or even have different "doom-guys" with every episode (aka just some new face sprite and maybe diff grunts) with an intro. text screen.

final episode is episode 1 doom guy anyway.
that's how i would have wrote doom personally (just light plot that fits in the themes of the game). people love shepherd in HL:OP4 because it's a different perspective, he's as silent as Gordon

it wasnt even good

this guy is especially retarded

This.

whao whoa whao! wait! you saying half life is a prequel to mass effect?

I'm starting to think all first person shooter fans are braindead retards tbh

It's about as retarded as people complaining about the pacing of Gone with the Wind or the draw distance of Ocarina of Time

It's not it's a video review from a time YT didn't exist, that's why it's in shitty resolution 4:3… because 16:9 monitor weren't a thing back then, original is in german or french.

Your post is about as retarded as sleeping with gaming journalists and hoping the community wouldnt have a problem with being swindled into purchasing shit quality games touted as 'mindblowing'

Damn really? I take back what I said then. HL2 isn't that great of a game but I thought the point that video was making was retarded

I think art should be judged as it was because people should learn to look past its limitations relative to today and see art for what it is. Game "journalism" has always been corrupt shit to market to the lowest common denominator though

Why? I was responding to his post where he was claiming plot is obtrusive to gaming, and it is. What I had said would have given Doom a semblance of plot without any obtrusion at all.

Every episode Doom-guy dies, but he returns in the next to wreck havoc. Or put another random UAC marine as protag for every episode. People love that shit, and I mention how people still "love" Adrian Shepherd even though there's no difference between him and Gordon Freeman.

You're shitting on people for wanting plot closure, that's the problem with the writers, not the player.

because they made us sit around in fucking 5 minute source cutscenes in HL2, EP1 and EP2.

if they never meant for the game to go beyond narrative boundaries set in HL1, then they fucked up at the very start with HL2.

To put it in context ALL the press went BEST GAME EV4RRRR §§§§§ like never before.
Except 2004 is the release year of UT 2004, Far Cry, Painkiller, Joint Ops, Tribes: Vengeance and Doom 3.
And ALL of them were better FPS (games were you shoot things) than HL².
That didn't make HL² a bad game but it clearly warranted criticism in the gameplay department, because while the adventure/exploration of the levels was nice a lot of the fights were borderline boring, the game was really piss easy and the IA pretty bad (especially when compared to the enemies behaviors of the first one, which did set the bar until FEAR).
HL² was the victory of "graphical experience" initiated by CoD/Halo and lauded to high heaven by a press already made of people that didn't like video games, over gameplay mechanics.

I'll give you the rest but Doom 3 was garbage

...

...

he's right but for all the wrong reasons

but hl2 is bad

Half Life didn't even end on a cliffhanger fam. Gordon beat the aliums was given a choice to work for G-Man or die. Plot over. The end. It was all wrapped up and Valve obviously had no idea how to continue it, which is why HL2's story is a giant mess that has very little to do with HL1.

Because he's the fucking writer. Though its true that people don't seem to be acknowledging that it would probably change loads during development just like every other game valve has ever made

This is TGWTG tier

...

Ok, but I'm doing nofap. Be more careful next time please

Doom 3 had spooky ambiance and amazing visuals, fights were definitely meatier than HL² (but still disappointing) it had the whole "picture in picture" thing with the buttons/screens/pda (now standard), the amazing lighting effects, etc… In nearly every "objective" points it was more impressive than HL².
That doesn't make Doom 3 a great FPS, far from it, it was a clear disappointment but it was still better or at least on par will HL².

Yet HL² was treated as the second coming of Jesus.

Well, Gordon is sidelined somewhere in the distant future - that at least implies that groups of humans either survived or enough were put in stasis by the Gman that there was some repopulation.
Alyx seems more unstable in Laidlaw's headcanon (a good idea - she saw her father got his brain sucked out!) and her personality gets more muted and programmed like Gordon when Gman shows up, so he plans to use her as another inspirational killing machine.
The vortigaunts wouldn't just abandon humanity to the Combine, either. They understand & despise slavery intimately (like the Githzerai in Planescape after they escaped Illithid control).
Terminator/Matrix style battles in the far future? Adrian Shepard camping in Xen? It all depends on art assets and the usability of certain game editors…

just xen my shit up doe.

We're not really comparing the gameplay anymore though. We're comparing the Id Tech 4 Engine vs Source 2004. Was Id Tech 4 more advanced than Source 2004? It's honestly hard to say since we gotto go way back to Source '04 to judge. People often site shit like HDR but that wasn't introduced until Source '06. Source '04 certainly had FAR SUPERIOR physics vs Id Tech 4. The ragdolls were more elaborate and some key puzzled in HL2 relied heavily on their implementation of Havok. The character models themselves also looked quite a lot better on HL2 then Doom 3 but this may or may not be an engine limitation.

I know VNN is the biggest Gaben cocksucker. But can we just be thankful that he did this video? It actually gives me some hope that Half-Life 3 isn't dead and that maybe Valve still wants to make games. I mean, hell, Artifact isn't what we want, but Valve *is* making a new game. Still want my Left4Dead 3 you motherfuckers. If you're not gonna support Left4Dead 2 then hurry the fuck up.

...

Doom 3 was garbage. It was an amazing tech demo that should never have been sold as a game. HL2 was worse than HL1 and everyone used to agree on that but then everyone got old and the group that never played HL1 at release started shitting on it.

Giving people false hope is possibly the worst thing he could be doing
HL3 isn't happening, neither is l4d3.

VNN is just completely delusional at this point.

...

man this guy has no idea what he's talking about

There is no proof of it.
It's just functions that happen to have mentions to hl3, which happens because of source 2 and valve working with old code that they don't want to change.

There's no concrete evidence at all.
If you actually had read Laidlaw's post you'd know that the only reason why it was posted is because nobody's working on half life. I mean shit he even goes so far as to voice his disappointment with what valve has been doing for the past decade.
It's false hope, and you're as much of a faggot as him to actually believe it.

Now I wonder how things would've gone if the story was kept more or less like the leak. It was a mess of different ideas of its own, sure, but I liked how the humanity was even more fucked there than in the release HL2. And because the leak consists of several story drafts that aren't very compatible with each other there are still no decent mods based on the leak. I've seen a recent one that is still in development that is using newly made models/textures instead of reusing the leak for a millionth time, but I'm pretty sure it's never ever.

Yeah, he did to them now what the German kid did to valve with the beta leak.
They now have to scrape everything and start from the scratch.
>implying that they even began work on ep3 HL3

Half-Life was largely developed in the making-it-up-as-we-go method that's no doubt familiar to a lot of modders. However, towards the end of development, they had ideas of where they wanted to go with the story and it was pointing in the direction of the Combine–even if the idea of the Combine as we know them hadn't been fully fleshed out at that point. You can hear clues hinting at this in the Nihilanth's cryptic, telepathic messages leading up to and during the final battle. There are clues all over its body, as well; Its stomach appears to be stapled shut after some sort of surgery, its legs seem to have been amputated in a fashion similar to the human Stalkers, it wears shackles similar in appearance to the Vortigaunts/Alien Slaves and, finally, seems to have combine technology shoved up its ass.

I just want to bash Advisers with my crowbar

I really want a game that makes you realize how insignificant Earth is compared to what's happening in the Universe.

Is anyone even fascinated by cosmic horror anymore? Dystopias? HL2 seems to be the only game slightly approaching the subject in an interesting way

Okay fellas since time for some fanfiction of my own for what HL3 might would be if I was at the helm (Assuming Laidlaw's stuff is HL2:Ep3)

>gains weight, grows a full beard, spends the rest of his days as an intergalactic biker named Ivan

Thats my HL3

Who they wasted on some faggot's fucking $20 map pack.

...

There's a G-man sighting in HL2, where he's handing weapons to the resistance.

Shitty newfags, do your homework and learn this comment by heart. Never seen it said as precisely and appropriately.

Don't give them ideas.

Prove it!

...

As an oldfag, that's one of the stupidest statements I've ever read. And completely untrue.

Being in this DENIAL

Oh my God, i can hear him tear up during the vid! kek

Valve is the Google of the games industry.

This would be a pretty good conclusion to the series, except for Shepherd's last words. That's retarded.

yeah I can see that

It was a joke you dongus

Jesus christ, never write anything ever again.

Oh ok
Good

It was visible all the way back when Steam was first started. Countless people ever since lamented what they saw was an intrusion, but everyone praised Valve for offering such a convenient way to be a trve gamer guiz.

Now look at them.

I second this.

Epic.

Impressive how true to this concept they stayed.

Archive or it didn't happen

Portal 2 and L4D2 were the end of Valve. Both were uninspired and exploitative sequels that showed how far Valve had fallen. L4D was so atmospheric and charming, the world was carefully constructed to feel meaningful and the characters were fun and memorable. L4D2 was a generic rehash by comparison, and the characters were especially garbage. For this, Valve split up the fanbase between two games and essentially killed it off. They had a $25 million ad campaign for this sequel which should have been a DLC in the first place.
Portal 2 was the same, unfunny and uninspired. Severely dumbed down to appeal to the likes of women and console players.
Valve also murdered TF2 repeatedly from 2009 onwards.

It makes me sad because a good game engine can inspire so much, and the source engine birthed many online communities. I always hoped Valve would make one more influential game engine before becoming irrelevant.

i stopped caring about half life when backman, moby francke & peter konïg left. it's a shame we'll never see the breengrub though

hl2 was a casual game that had good setpieces with a physics engine & other fixtures that were very novel for the time. an arena shooter like unreal served a fundamentally different audience.
people sink thousands of hours into souls pvp even though that aspect of the games is completely degenerate but those same people will never have any interest in a pvp game that is mechanically better or more skill-based.
in essence:
this basically describes the western canon and has always happened with everything that has ever been categorized

This. As an aspiring screenwriter, it's something i've railed on about for years. Writers have been treated like shit since the dawn of Hollywood, probably far longer. They're the most powerful piece in the puzzle but get pimped like whores. It's like the beginning of comic books, when writers had so little regard they didn't even both crediting them on the books. Nowadays, Grant Morrison or Brian Bendis' name will sell a book faster than Spider-Man or Batman's will. And look at what's happening in Hollywood now. Story is king, sites like rottentomatoes and metacritic have rendered the blockbuster movie star obsolete. Tom Cruise, Stallone or Will Smith's name won't move shit if the movie sucks. But i'll bet you a screenwriter with a solid string of hit stories behind his belt can still put asses in seats.

It's also really fucking stupid, because in their greed they're missing out on a really valuable opportunity. Do you realize the marketing power you could leverage, if you were able to market a film– from the writer of No Country For Old Men, from the mind of the writer who created Terminator, etc. etc. Wouldn't it be fascinating to follow one writer's artistic development from his first film to his 10th much in the same way we do with a writer's books.
