Because it was french nerds deciding they had to make their own MMO, Dofus. It was pretty popular, but got plagued by the usual MMO problems of autists abusing the system and ruining it for everyone. Still, they had fun with their setting and had talent besides programming, and France is a country teeming with animation talent - hell, the world's greatest animation festival is in Annecy. So as they wanted to start fresh with Wakfu, they wanted to tell a straight story about the setting they had created. Dofus never really died because of aforementioned autism, though, hence why Dofus eventually got the cartoon section work more on it as Wakfu, the game, dwindled.
That is about the size of it.

Also to anyone else in the thread, even if you can't be biffed watching the entire series, try the Season 1 Nox OVA and Season 2 Ogrest OVA. They shouldn't spoil the main show if you decide to watch them, but are the best parts of the series IMO.
