Are video game consoles inherently Capitalist ?

Are video game consoles inherently Capitalist ?

Yes.

Stupid, broken, locked down shit that simultaneously spies on you and drains you of capital? Could be.

They're made by workers in shitty factories. Technology isn't inherently capitalist, and neither is entertainment.

They'd probably still exist under Socialism if that's what you mean.

Maybe not as many meaningless variants though, and you'd be able to play every game on all of them.

And they wouldn't spy on you while you wank.

I don't think you know what capitalism is

It's more Silicon Valley I would say. Masses of unpaid overtime and a work environment that encourages extra long work days.

...

Sorry, I'm a retard. I meant "Would there still be production of consoles under socialism ?"

I think there would be more of a shift to communal entertainment rather than individual. Arcades instead of consoles, theaters instead of big screens.

And considering consoles are just broken computers anyway I would like to think there would be a glorious return to PC gaming instead of console plebism. Why would you get a piece of shit you can't modify in any significant way when building your own customizable computer is both trivially easy and far superior?

Yes

Except for the Dreamcast

yes, there is literally no excuse for them to be locked-down and have exclusive games.

What do you mean by "locked down"?

So publishers huh. Fuck those guys.

Probably not. Consoles exist pretty much entirely to peddle off exclusives. All socialist gaming will be on pc with downloaded games.

Jesus christ. The question is if they're inherently capitalist. The question is whether video game consoles would exist without capitalism.

I think console gaming has a bit of a reason to exist

I mean there was a certain charm to playing split-screen with 3 of your chums back when consoles cared about split-screen/local multiplayer

Not impossible on pc though. Recently I just emulate mario party/mario kart and play that split screen.

This nigga gets it

pls no

i can't use a keyboard for gaming for shit

It't basically a computer that has been intentionally stripped off of its features: the hardware could do it (run anything from any platform, for example), but the OS limits you on purpose.

not sure if you're serious but you can use controllers on your PC, I do it all the time

pc has more controller options than any console though.
You should probably learn to use a keyboard though. I'm impressed I managed to play console fps for so long.

a. there are pc controllers
b. keyboards are so much better than controllers it's not even funny

cba tbh fam

Communism means we finally get the Dreamcast 2

You just plug it in by USB. Most games will support an Xbox controller right away. There isn't anymore work thank a console m8, it's one of the easiest things you could do on pc because downloading and clicking "play" on steam.

"we must take the system more seriously than it takes itself" slavoj zizek on the nintendo switch

It's literally easier and quicker than console gaming

No they are CENTRALIZED systems built on specific blueprints/specs.
Whatever that means to you.

forgot pic

That's another thing

Without IP laws to protect them, anybody can copy an Xbox or whatever and produce one. Consoles don't really make sense under socialism.

Aren't arcades designed to burn through all your coins ?

Yeah, that's kinda idea of the modern arcade, and you can really see how that concept affected the design for older arcade games. Even with old cabinets though, you can adjust the settings to determine how many coins it takes to play, if any at all.

In my town there's an arcade where all the machines are set to free-play. You pay five bucks for a pass and you can play literally all day if you want to. You get a little wristband so that you can even leave and come back.

I guess the way I imagine it working is that instead of putting resources into individual entertainment centers that, outside hardcore users, go unused most of the time and are rendered inert because of their status as private property, you would have public machines that when not in use are free for anybody to use, if that makes sense.

Leisure time and entertainment are human rights in my opinion, but I don't think it's feasible to give everyone their own playstation XX or whatever, but I don't think it's as unreasonable to try and guarantee access to that kind of entertainment.
