sfv isnt bad at it's core, it's fucking season 2's fault for ruining everything and making the game dumb

season 1 was so much fun and I actually felt like there was genuine defense and footsies. characters had GOOD pokes, and then everything was slowed down in season 2 and now everyone just fucking fishes for CCs on the slower shittier buttons that were nerfed

I talked about this in the Discord but with this game I'm experimenting with something I think could work.

My game's a 3D fighting game, but I'm trying something where you double tap up to jump and double tap down to crouch. I did this because I wanted to imitate the simplicity of jumping in 2D fighters, and my characters jump very high. There are lots of reasons why, such as air-to-ground attacks, air projectiles, and air combos.

You can crouch in two ways: a "defensive crouch" (guard+down yes my game has a guard button), or an "offensive crouch" (double tap down).

To sidestep you simply do a quick flick in a direction as opposed to double tapping it.It could be mapped to an input later (I.E. P+K+G+direction in Virtua Fighter) but for now it's just a flick. Of course, holding any direction makes you start walking in that direction.

Double tapping forward or backward makes you do a run, but it has a pre-run dash. Single-tapping down while in this pre-run dash makes you crouch, and it lets you maintain your momentum.

High jumps and aerial combat/tactics in 3D is the main thing I want to take from Tech Romancer, and it seemed to work fine in that game, so I'm trying a new system to make it work here too.

Of course, if it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. I'll scrap it if it's shit and just go for a more traditional system like SoulCalibur. But I think I'm onto something here. What do you guys think?

There might be a rom hack out there with more palettes, all the new ones were DLC for the 360/ps3 version

sadly there is no rom hack that isn't full of neon lolz skins, you have to do it yourself if you want more subdued palettes. I spent around 2 hours making one for alex but I want to completely redo all the palletes for Alex, Dudley, and Q, but not at the cost of 40 hours

The patch'd be at the same fucking day as consoles and the only reason it'll be delayed a day is because there's some complications. They even announce the patch will happen a bit earlier after their last patch disrupted some sorta PC tournament which is neat. That's a huge improvement after the After Story B patch that came out of nowhere and was delayed by more than a week.

It's got all the basic essentials in terms of single player content but that's it. It's unique game mode "party vs" is online only.

Anyone learning/practising new characters in their game of choice?

I decided to pick up Ms Fortune. I'm loving her ability to keep the pressure on and to keep your opponent guessing with her rekkas (overhead? low? grab?). I haven't even started to try headless yet, i'm just working on some BnB for now.

The game still has the very same problems it had before, In fact, most of the problems were there in the beta.
It just became more noticeable because people spent more time with the game for it to develop and the new characters make it more evident.
The normal were always stubby and the footsies were crap, people just weren't exploiting the meta of input delay by factoring the opponent's inability to react to things when calculating their actions yet. The lack of variety made optimal play to form and it's boring and repetitive.

Started it up again so I'm cycling through all the characters. Use to main Jeffry but now I'm leaning towards Brad or Eileen.

I started leaning towards Sarah last time I played. When I played 1 and 2 I played Kage (poorly), and when I picked up FS initially I wanted to learn Shun Di but I might be better off sticking to a more "normal" character

Using it to teach a friend some fightans basics before moving on to better games, and now I'm playing Double/Valentine where I was playing Filia/Ms Fortune before. I'm hoping I can convince them to move to GG, but might end up playing KoF instead, which would be fine as well.

Do you already have a working engine with basic stuff? I mean, it would be easier to decide upon more specific stuff when you actual test it. Kinda like the old MUGEN days where people tested everything on Kung Fu Man and then they went to create an actual character.

I mean, like that "modeler problem" you had earlier, you could have used those months to focused on developing the base for the game.

Also, i preffer a button or direction+button for jump like in DOA.

I do already have a working engine, it's just things are slow to take off because I pay people by the hour and there's only so many hours I can afford.

Not only that but we needed to redo all the animations after an issue with the rigs made all our old stuff unusable, and our old animator went on vacation (which meant I had to find a new guy) so we're still getting that done.

It's basically all ready to go, we just need animations and it's taking longer than I'd like.

You don't have a generic model you could use for the purposes of testing things? Even having geometric shapes so you can test out movement options.

The movements required are very specific and the generic model in UE4 doesn't lend itself well to them. With the effort required to do specific animations it'd be time and money better spent making animations with our existing character meshes.

Also, I neglected to mention that kind of testing costs money. First to test it in engine with non-characters, then to put the characters in and test it with them.

Seeing as how I have to be efficient with my money, it'd be much better to just wait until I have the required animations before testing it.

And you can still test out button inputs like your ideas for jumping with just a square representing a character. All you wanted to do is test out something that doesn't need animations per-se.

I've seen several fighting games that have open development and it definitely seems that some stuff can be "roughly" tested and then given the proper animations later provided you have a model to work with to represent the character. You're gimping youself by thinking that you have to have the finished animation first while developing a 3D game. Just use shapes for characters (rectangular prism for standing, cube for crouching, etc) and test that while you wait for funds.

Even posting those screencaps and videos would do well to show progress in my book.

You could test side steps, double-tap for movement options, and even jumping in your engine to settle on button configurations.

Apart from funding it, I am the director. I designed the characters and several of the concepts as well the game itself (although I'm paying someone else to program it). I mostly oversee the production of the game and draw storyboards and reference sheets.

Jotaro's a stupid asshole but the final fight with Dio is pretty well done and, overall, everyone gets to shine in Part 3 which IMO is the best thing about it.

I only saw the showcase stream. She looks fuckin' ridiculous. Fast projectiles, slow projectiles, beams, air beams, diagonally downwards air beams etc. All with that lovely NRS quality animation that basically gives projectile spamming near immunity.


SBR is pretty good. It always miffed how little it got repped in the FGs when some of its characters have so much potential. Now that I think about it, part of that is because there's a ton of "utility" Stands instead of the usual male stripper robot parade.

Is there no hope for me if I want to play King and do chain grabs well on pad? I can do reasonably well practicing shit but I'd never pull half the wonky shit I do in a real match. I mean, I have trouble hitting two buttons simultaneously sometimes, it's basically impossible to do an RDC without heavily abusing the button mapping options. I can do them fine on stick, but I don't use sticks with tekken because I don't have the wrist dexterity for all the fine movement. I don't think a fightpad would alleviate my troubles either, that's just a regular pad with no sticks and the triggers moved beside the face buttons.

I can do King's chain throws well on pad so just practice and git gud. Also chain throws are usually more trouble than they're worth and the two throws you really want to abuse a lot are the giant swing and the shining wizard, but if you play a lot of online against scrubs I guess chainthrows are good enough.

Yeah, I know they're not that important but they're cool to pull off and make people upset when you eat half their life or more in one go. Do you use the shoulders like the default setup (or at all)? I've used the standard layout for ages with just 1+2+3+4 on right stick so I can ki charge in practice - I would just used L1+R1 but like I said I can't hit shit at the same time for the life of me, usually it's only like a frame off. 1+3 and 2+4 are typically okay because you just flatten your thumb and hit it but even then I occasionally fuck up minutely.

I have a fightpad now so I crab claw it, back in ye olde days of Tekken 2 when I was a kid I used the shoulders to help me out, there's no shame in that imo. Just practice so you can git gud. Also, if you're really desperate, there's a secret "trick" involving chainthrows where you can just mash 1+2+3+4 and they'll come out due to how macroing works, they casualised this shit ever since Tekken 4. The thing with mashing it out is that it will ALWAYS do the same path if you just mash 1+2+3+4 all the way, the path is the one with the least inputs, if they have the same number of inputs then it depends on the buttons pressed which is complicated and I won't go into it.
HOWEVER, if you do the first input correctly and then just mash 1+2+3+4 you can manipulate the macros AND get the chain throw you want, provided that the first input in the chain throw doesn't share a button with another one.

Let's take the RDC, you do the chainthrow starter, the 3 extensions all share the same button, which is 2, and the second input with the throw that goes into RDC shares the same button as the shitty triple arm break, which is 1, so you have to do this one mostly clean, which is by pressing 2, then 1, then you can buffer 1 and input 2+3 or you can just input 1+2+3+4 after you input the 2 and the 1. After that, since the dragon sleeper has less inputs, you have to do the first input for the RDC (that being 1+3) correctly, after that just keep mashing out 1+2+3+4, you have input it 4 times to get the RDC.

A friend finally got me into UNIEL after showing me Vatista and I've been practicing some of her charge partitions.

Also shit Jubei came out so I had to update this. There was some spelling mistakes and bad grammar/syntax also I added in the characters I missed the first time. I'll make it look better later once I can find the Jubei portrait.

Part of why I maintain that art direction and overall style is what's most important.
VF5 might look simple but is very coherent and the characters very distinct besides the Bryants and Chans. Also helps that the customization is fantastic and not just "put a rubber ducky on the head and glue a shotgun to the back".

As someone who made (and shut down) the Xonotic discord, I can tell you exactly what happens:
You talk to the same small group of people for long enough that you run out of game relevant shit to talk about. Depending on playerbase size and other factors, you may have become burnt out on the game itself, but you don't want to bail on it entirely. Thus the discord becomes a cycle of not quite talking about the game
IRC shares a similar issue, but at least requires active participation where discord allows offline messages and such, and with some games it has practical functions (matchmaking, alerts, shit like that)

Styles are way too different. Even the LB characters were stuck in Power groove, which is closest to the SS style, they'd still have a huge advantage by means of the parrying mechanic.

You, like, play the game.
Play the tutorial + mission mode. Just like any fighting game you should work on understanding and using the mechanics first so you can develop solid fundamentals you can build on, optimal combos and matchup knowledge are worries for later.

Oh right, tutorial and mission mode is in Xrd's case. Otherwise you're stuck watching airdash academy and guilty gear crash course.

Well, all I can tell you to do is to play the tutorial and pick a basic character like Ky, Sol, Axl, May, or maybe Leo/Faust if you don't mind challenging yourself. I'm in the same boat you are and I like Ky a lot because he has good tools for everything and I like having a fireball, but you may find Axl easier because his gameplay is much slower and more focused on screen control with fullscreen normals. Sol is a much more aggressive version of Ky, and May is a charge character with high damage and good screen control through summons and a weird projectile. Leo has big dumb special moves that are pretty easy to use, but he also has a stance which changes all his normals and makes him unable to block, so that may be too much. Faust is similar to Axl but he's more aggressive, and thus lacks Axl's wealth of defensive options.

I've heard Sin recommended as a beginner character, but his gatlings are very limited so I think he's more like an intermediate character.

Also, the video series I mentioned are very good advice. The Street Fighter's Guide to Guilty Gear, although a bit outdated due to the release of Rev2, inspired me to play the game.

Yeah. With the exception of Guile's Flashkick I don't think there's a very good dp or dp like move in the game. It makes you rely on trying to time a jab or a crouching hard punch for jump-ins which is pretty rough on the timing part all things considered especially in the case of the former. The only thing it really has going for it is the fact that matches queue up pretty quick regardless of time of day.

Even the Flash Kick loses to jump-ins on wake up sometimes. For a game that tries to pride itself on forcing the players to commit to their decisions, SFV can't seem to have moves work or not work consistently. Truly a marvel of poor programming.

At this point, I'm convinced Koihime Enbu is a better Street Fighter game. Well, until you get a fatal counter.

I have no idea who is Sirlin's main but the grab button is a good thing for me because the the distance to activate a grab or a normal/command normal was iffy so many times I wanted to do a check on the opponent I was yomi contered becasuse the grab had such priority. Direction plus button (that is a normal otherwise) is good in games that have more options for normals like KOF or Guilty Gear. In Fantasy Strike it felt restricted.

I read they changed some animations too so let's hope that "Remix Culture" bullshit changes with every update.

Are more competitive-oriented Smash clones alright? Because the one I play just announced a new character who looks pretty cool. Unfortunately with the speed they work at he probably won't be out until late September.

Rivals of Aether is neat, but the sprites are painfully low-poly and the animation is pretty lacking, although the latter may have improved over time. Vore Frog looked alright, and from the gameplay it looked like his gimmick is that his poison attacks mark enemies, which boosts the power of certain special moves and presumably his smash attacks.

Rivals would have had a much better life it if hadn't released with all of four characters and three stages. It removes a lot of the bullshit in Melee, which of course means smashfags get to complain about muh transferable musscle memroy.

There are no other good Smash clones. The gameplay is fun enough for a party game, but I've found (no offence) Guilty Gear has many of the same rock-paper-scissors-heavy neutral decisions and most airdashers are more mobile than Melee.

So how full of shit is this graph? I just watched a video by Core-A gaming about simplicity in fighting games and Fantasy Strike came up. I'm aware of the game but have never played it nor watched any footage but the moment I saw this picture I had to go look into it. The argument that "all other fighting games" occupy this opposite side of the rift is a bit perplexing. Do games like Smash bros not fall inbetween of input simplicity? Do games like Under Night In Birth with it's simple movelists and universal motions (barring Vatista's charge inputs) not put it as less complex than your standard Arc System game?

How much shit is Sirlin on or is there any validity to what he and Rising Thunder are trying to do? And is his game any good? I've seen it mentioned here and it sounds like a soulless fighting game.

They went pretty in-depth about his gimmicks. The poison causes any whiffed attack to do 1% damage to the poisoned guy, but any attack that connects will remove a stack. It also increases how long an enemy stays in his bubble.
It's got (I think) 9 stages now, maybe 8. There are 8 characters right now and number 9 (Ori from that metroidvania) comes out the 23rd. I can't really play real fighting games anymore because I have trouble with my hands from my job. I can still play this, though it does affect me still.
Especially the lion. They were talking about maybe going back to redo older characters' spritework once the art for the remaining characters (3 original ones after the frog and one more guest character after that) is done. That would be nice. I play the bird so it's not too bad, but the lion's spritework is painfully bad.

In short, that graph is more of a marketing tool than a real appraisal. You must understand Sirlin is the kind of guy who thinks that OSing a throw in Guilty Gear with 4/6S+H is a huge deal because the throw input is supposed to be just 4/6H and the OS is "strictly better." I'm using this example in particular because he whined about it on his personal blog a while ago and I thought it was goddamned hilarious.
I really like that channel's videos, but he's way too eager to be an apologist for FGCelebs. His last video was 12 minutes of him talking about how ass SFV's design is, but he ended it with the same milquetoast "well, maybe capcom will listen to the fans and patch it" sludge you've seen everywhere.
Smash isn't a fighting game, but on that graph it'd probably be somewhere between Fantasy Strike and the hrair. As for actual fighting games with simple-as-Smash inputs, the new Blade Strangers apparently has them, and I know Them's Fighting Herds (RIP) is also looking at having the most complex motion be a 236+button for your super.

I haven't played Under Night so I couldn't tell you how complex the atomic gameplay is.

Apparently one big success of the Rising Thunder alpha was getting players to recognize that special moves are just different tools in a character's kit. Many players make the mistake of thinking a special move is inherently superior to normal moves.
There was a guy posting about his experience with it a thread or two ago. He thought it was alright, but it falls prey to the same fallacy other "accessible fighting games" do in that anyone shallow enough to enjoy this won't enjoy the complexities of something real, and anyone enjoying something real won't want something this shallow.

I would have been okay with that if it had launched with them. It's been out for what feels like two years now and they've only added that much, eh? I can't say I'm too impressed, although I don't know what they could have done to win me over.

It'll actually be two years next month if you're counting Early Access. It came out of that in March, I think. They added some decent single-player stuff too. Story mode's basically just a few regular fights for each character, and then one big boss where you get to use all of them. The story stuff itself honestly makes me cringe. They also added "abyss mode". I play that a lot. You do a bunch of waves with different objectives. Stuff like killing a bunch of weak enemies or knocking enemies into a rift thing. Every completed wave gives XP. Once you level up you can buy runes with the ingame gold (earned only from actually playing, not buyable or anything) and equip them so you do better next time. There's a special vs mode where you can play with your custom characters too. It's just a silly little thing that lets you get some really broken setups. Honestly, most of the changes have been balancing characters.

Basically standard notations still exist, but characters are very focused around a handful of specials and everyone has two supers with the same input across characters. Command normals are almost universal as well with stuff like 3+C being a knockup.

I will have to dig up an archive to see what he said exactly. I might even try the free weekend just to get a taste of it myself.

It's one of the pettiest things he could have chosen. It amounts to pushing a second button due to the game using only H for throws rather than a button combination that automatically OSs like Street Fighter. In fact, there's little difference between the OS input in either game, but.
It's not really a conscious decision, which is the whole point of an OS. You just throw with two buttons instead of one and it's the objectively correct thing to do.
