yeah it devolved into some spooky pan-arabism pretty fast, basically the oppressive western friendly rulers weren't letting them be properly arab/muslim as opposed to just not being oppressed in general

Fighting pan-arabism in North africa is one of the biggest leftist traits. Also at least in my country, there are a lot of far left movement in universities and the original groups that started the revolts were leftists, then it got infiltrated by the state and islamists. same thing happened in egypt, they allied islamists because they had the same enemy but Islamists were more organised and jumped on the wave and grabbed power when they said they were not interested in it.

No theory. No structure. They thought "once the government is overthrown we can be free". No one seemed to really give any thought to what happens after the revolution. This leads to islamism taking over since they had organisation, structure, and a goal. They had a vision for a future (even if it's a bullshit one) that the protesters never had.
