I just played through the majority of Himawari no Shoujo, I really liked it in the beginning but I'm not sure if I can play through the end, it's very dull.

Now, I'm playing Rewrite, and I'm enjoying it, and once/if I finish that, I'll either play Ever17 or Himawari -The Sunflower-. I tried to get Little Busters! to work, but for some reason it won't work on my computer.

The art is still fine (especially compared to the remake designs), and you can easily replace the soundtrack yourself. The main problem is the shitty engine/UI.

Updating the artwork means dressing up Arc and Curry whore like sluts when they previously dressed modestly, completely changing Ciel's features so she looks like a completely different character aside from having blue hair and glasses, as well as removing all color from Arc and Akiha's clothes.

What's stopping them from using different designs than those if fans didn't like them so much?

As for VNs in general, the last one I tried was Maggot Baits because I was impressed with Euphoria's surprisingly decent plot (both are developed by CLOCKUP, Maggot Baits is not translated). I've only had one sitting with it but so far it seems like a chuuni wankfest with a silly premise that exists only to justify the fetish material. I'm going to give it a fair chance though because you could say the same thing about the beginning of Euphoria. My favorite thing about it so far is somehow they got a English speaking screamo band to do the OP.

Crimson Gray is a surprisingly good VN for an indie $10 title.

John, the protagonist, is "clinically depressed" and also has a stalker yandere who is the only person to give light (and bloodshed) in his life.

The story is pretty good and the turns the story can take are pretty drastic in some areas, mainly because of the three-character main cast. Artwork is pretty good, too.

Before anyone says "muh depression quest", I don't want to ruin the narrative for you but suffice to say the character of John is extremely realistically written. Considering the time period this is set in (it's not obvious but lets you figure it out later) and the secondary theme throughout the story, if you've read or watched anything like "Letters from Generation RX" you'll quickly realize how much better read the writer was for this story as opposed to Zoe "Five Guys" Valkenburg.
Also the yandere is really well done, too.
Multiple endings, about 3 to 5 choices per decision point, multiple decision points throughout the story, and no embarrassing indie yuppie VA work.
Also nudes but that's not the point.

It's getting a translation, so you might as well wait for that. If nothing else, at least it will be uncensored.

Talk about edge. I wanted to check it out myself, especially after that masterpiece of Euphoria (well, "masterpiece" is overselling it but it really was shockingly well done considering the VN was billed with the first half as being just a SAW game but with frantic sex.
Keep us posted. It'll be a while before it goes English, though the folks at MG are on it. I want to know if it gets good, since a story like this would be tolerable for me if not for the guro. I can take Ninja Scroll levels of gore and further, but if they replace good ol' "fap scenes" with gore on top of gore that takes place in the story, well…

Question about Higurashi. I've been reading the manga lately and was wondering how it compares to the visual novel. Is the male MC in part 1 as fucking retarded as he is in the manga? Seriously, that scene where he lies to his friend right in front of her face when she CLEARLY knows he's up to something and demanding her to come out with her secrets is full retarded on his part. Then he continues to lie when they clearly know what he's up to completely eliminating their trust for him made me almost want to stop reading. I can understand being stressed but he's sometimes surprised about hearing information he should already know if you put 2 and 2 together. I don't hate it, hell I like it but the MC's stupidity put a sour taste in my mouth. Maybe the other parts will be better.

That cat dude really reminds me of Blacksad. But looking at that mangagamer blog, they seem to be pretty fast at translating and editing. The longest part being testing everything out to see if the game will crash or not. Like how in Kyonyuu Fantasy, I run into this bug where you the background and characters would disappear, then the text box. Once the text box leaves, you can't even save or load your file forcing you to restart the game. This could only be due to playing on a tablet. I didn't run into this issue on my PC.

I heard Higurashi was really good as a VN and it was terrible as an anime (I liked the anime) and manga.
Then again, those same people say Umineko is great and I know that's an absolute lie.

I think that's visual novels and their community in general. They're niche and take time to delve into. So people can't really argue against their opinion unless they take that dive themselves. Not that I think VNs are bad, but some people can really hype them up after dumping so much time into them.

Do you browse /d/ or have any attachments to that sort of content? I don't. The bad end to Maggot Baits has lots of /d/ related stuff that would probably justify a purchase by itself when the game comes out in English should you be into that sort of thing. Back on the main route, the main character Edgy Mac Badass (not the guy in the pic) is the younger brother of some ne'er-do-well who's master plan is to become the biggest cuckold of all time by kidnapping witches and giving them to the tentacle monster to do tentacle monster things with while he watches on a monitor presumably while jerking off and crying. There have been 2 guro torture scenes so far. Both contribute absolutely nothing to the plot and only exist for shock value. I'm sure there will be more to come. There is an emotionless girl who reads a book and contemplates the meaning of life, a slutty gyaru villian, a musclegirl who rapes men till they die, and some other characters but they don't matter. At one point there was a loli gangbang scene that is probably going to be completely rewritten in English what with all the references to her being unripe and all the men calling each and the girl very crude names.

On the bright side, the artwork is great if you can stand the fetish material, the background music is consistently very good even if it breaks into cheesy heavy metal guitars during fight scenes, and the whole thing can be enjoyed as if it were an exploitation B movie. So far it isn't as bad as I thought it would be but neither does it exceed my expectations. It's a run of the mill chuunibyou story about some generic edgy guy who fights generic evil mastermind types for generic reasons while all the screentime goes to the witches who are usually fighting, being raped, or having their eyes gouged out or limbs cut off (they grow back). I'm in far enough that I have to see it to the conclusion but at this point I believe that this isn't really on the level of Euphoria, which did a good job of walking the tightrope of having the plot be a vehicle for more porn while being interesting in its own right.

SonoHana isn't exactly anything special, but there's some cute shit in there. They're also way more lewd than they might appear at first glance.

Nah man I love Kara no Shoujo 2. The story and characters were good, Masaki and Reiji were great together, I didn't need a guide to finish it and it and it tied in nicely with Cartagra. I'll admit when Toko was found and Reiji started screaming, I teared up a little ;_;

Although Yukiko had no reason to be the cover girl and Toko's voice actress did a noticeably worse job, which is a real shame since her voice was perfect in the first game.

The whole flying thing is supposed to be symbolism you dumb faggot. I found Kara 2's plot to be much more consistent and steady than the first but at the sacrifice of actual gameplay and pace. I wish they paced out the second terrace much better than this massive five hour info dump at the start. Although to retroactively go through it and have the entire thing of it be re-contextualized was pretty smooth if unnessersary. Thanks for the drama CD though, I'll have to look into it.

See, I think Kara 2 was a more well written story than the first but at the expense of the actual crime solving and piecing together of logic which is why I enjoyed the first so much. There were so very little moments in the second one where you actually put things together. Although I predicted almost everything about half way through the VN and felt pretty cocky about it. I'm not sure if that's common. The major complaint I had from the first game is still there and that's the whole "have to visit certain places at certain times with fuck all hints to know when to do that" which is fucking unfair but everything else about the two VNs I had no problems with.

According to the commentary in Euphoria (or an interview I read), Euphoria was that writer's first real attempt at writing an entire VN. I get the feeling Maggot Baits is a bit more professional despite it not having the same emotional and conspiratorial touch as Euphoria.
I don't think it's the same guy, but maybe he decided to go in such a drastically different direction with his next project that his style is unrecognizable.

Final thoughts on Maggot Baits aka I'm going to tell you what you already gleamed from the title:

I've completed all the endings and have all but 1 CG (it's a variant of a torture scene and I'm not going back in to figure out how to get it). On a structural level, Maggot Baits is very simple. Your first playthrough has only one branching path (be a retard and get the bad ending, don't be a retard and get ending 1). After ending 1 the game gives you more branching paths at various points which change events resulting in ending 2 (which is barely any different). The latter half of the VN steers hard into maximum edgelord territory. Earlier parts of it are at least silly enough to poke fun at, but it became difficult to do that as the plot progressed. Guro scenes ramp up hard later on and focus on the main girls. It gets bad enough that I cannot recommend the title if that is in any way a breaking point for people. In comparison, the guro in Euphoria is a failure state which I avoided problem free. The main character starts the game as an almost hilarious stereotype of the chuuni protagonist. By the end he so fervently resists character develop that he ruins one of the few potentially great vanilla scenes (pshhh, nothing personnel, girl. You're a weapon that I can discard at any time). I'm paraphrasing but he really does roll out lines like that to the closest thing this game has to waifu material. Later on in ending 2 he opens up emotionally twice. That is a hell of a lot of reading to get to that point though. In both ending he goes full Cold Steel, complete with a darkness aura in one ending and becoming a tentacle monster in another. The main villian is a smug loli which is fantastic potential for a scene where you properly discipline her. Instead the MC abandons all morals and decides to brutally rape, beat, and strangle her. Luckily he dies in both endings as he fucking deserves (If you read this far you don't care about spoilers).

If you thought this game had waifu potential, abandon all hope. Most of the girls in this are pure trash, some are average, one is obviously favored by the plot and writers. Personality wise I liked the two villian witches, the gyaru and the muscle girl. They were both open sluts but at least had something resembling well defined character. The ox girl had potential, but she has so little screen time her character is wasted. The dog ear girl, the emotionless one, is the obvious favorite. As her animal association would imply, she's loyal to a fault to the MC. Ultimately she's the strongest character mentally because she is never truly broken by all the torture unlike the other girls. She'd be ok waifubait, but then they did a flashback to her before becoming a witch and had a brutal scene where, you guessed it, she gets horribly raped and mutilated. Upon becoming a witch she loses her memories and is re-virgined but I don't count that. Used goods are used goods. Finally I want to talk about the dragonfly bitch. This ties for me with the dog ear girl flashback rape in being the worst thing in the game. This universe operates by type moon standards. Want more magical power? Become a cock hungry whore. Makes sense for a porn game. So the MC lives with the dog ear girl, ox girl, dragonfly girl, and a normal humal lady (who gets raped and murdered like everyone else). You'd think they would go with a harem subplot, this being a chuunibyou porn game. NOPE! The MC only ever fuggs the dog girl and then gets his rape and murder spree on in the endings. Ox girl and the good loli get captured, raped, and tortured. Dragonfly girl decides to leave their base, go out in the streets and agrees to be gangbanged by random faceless hobos, niggers included. Worst girl ever.

tldr: Maggot Baits has potential and can be fun at the start, but devolves into something only the most hardcore fetish lover could enjoy. Either go in with very reserved expectation or don't bother.

He looks like every anime attempt at making a respectable looking nigger. Nobody ever gets blacked by him at least. He was one of the only fun things about the story because he went to Japan to fight people and the VA would go crazy shouting HAAAAAALLELUJAAAAAAAAAAH. Simple little things like that would go a long way towards making the title more fun to read.

I forgot to mention the endings. Bad end: go to /d/ and you'll get the idea. I don't like the fetish material but on a fundamental level this was my favorite end because it had the gyaru and the musclegirl bullying the others. Again one of the few times where the writer tried to create a scene that tried to be fun. Ending 1 everyone dies and there is a completely inappropriate epilogue about how in the future there is world peace and everything is great. Ending 2 only the dog girl lives via deus ex machina bullshit where she gets a normal human body again. Before dying the MC as a tentacle monster knocked her up. One more single parent household. Happy ending I guess? The cuckold guy had one more funny scene with the smug loli where he went full footfag and was sucking on her toes.

This VN is horrible in that regard. Had the perfect setup for a vanilla harem that never happens. Had a good setup for a monogamous relationship with the dog ear girl, but she gets the brunt of the torture and a fair helping of rape too.

I'm going pure vanillafag after this. I really need the detox.

Beatrice is a meta-fictional trap, turns out that she is a character created by a tranny that served as a maid in the family and was also the true descendant. He planned to kill everyone becase he had a shit life and was butthurt about Battler not coming back to fuck him after Battler promised to do so when the tranny dressed up as Shannon Oh, Shannon and Kannon are the same person and also characters created by the tranny the thing is, he didn't actually killed anyone and the true culprits are Battler's parents who killed others so that they didn't have to share the treasure.

So basically Beatrice is not the culprit and isn't that important compared to Battler parents, she's a trap and the whole magic stuff is complete bullshit.

It does focus on murder mysteries but it has a very slow beginning. The problem is that it goes absolutely fucking retarded after the first part.

The three quarters of Higurashi are pretty good. The slice of life/game moments get a bit tedious and repetitive, but it's otherwise pretty good. Mild spoiler and explanation regarding the first part: He's going crazy. He's not retarded. It gets explained later on.

With that out of the way: the later chapters are absolute garbage and bring the entire thing down on its head. Meta spoiler about the last two chapters: second to last chapter is an info dump that takes hours to get through and the last chapter takes all of the horror and tension and torture and dread from the chapters that came before and turns it around through the power of friendship. Stop reading when you get to the info dump chapter, for your own sake.

In Higurashi, the development happens in first person. In Umineko, everything happens offscreen and you just get there late to discuss about what happened. I didn't finish reading Umineko because it felt like a significantly worse Higurashi.

If you want a horror VN, try Swan Song. For mystery, try Ever17. Be warned that the Ever17 translation contains engrish. If you want both, Kara no Shoujo.

Symphonic Rain is super comfy. Has a wee bit of drama here and there, but it's not the central part of the VN.

Besides that, I started reading The House in Fata Morgana. I like the character art and the music is pretty good at times. It's about a depressed rich guy who wakes up with no memories. He's accompanied by a maid who is slowly showing him his memories in order to bring him back to his normal self. The way it sounds though, it's some super natural stuff. I mean he's already observing his memories as if he went back in time to the exact scene. Also the maid talks about waiting for his arrival as if hes been asleep for ages or just came back from somewhere far. The mansion is depressingly dark and muggy and he talks as though his maid is so pale to the point of being transparent. I have a feeling the MC is a vampire as and the maid is a familiar or ghost. I'll have to continue reading to find out. It's just going over his childhood with his sister who definitely loves him to death. Seeing how gloomy his place is in the present, she's going to die in some awful way.

That aside, I also got Dal Segno. I always find these type of things really comfy. Also I uploaded them to MEGA if anyone wants them. I think you should support Mangagamer but piracy is the best way to spread through word of mouth.

As for what happened in Majikoi, Chris isn't mentally prepared for sex as a part of their relationship. Furthermore, her father's will almost completely overrides hers, so his disapproval over the relationship means she's not willing to go any further. Yamato gets the idea that if he sneaks in and fucks her, this will make her disobey her father and continue their relationship. So he basically sneaks up to her room and (by the legal & social definition) rapes her. She repeatedly expresses that she doesn't want this, pleads with Yamato to stop, etc. But through the contrivance of pure fiction, she suddenly changes her mind in the end and decides it's okay. If there's one thing that was made abundantly clear for most of the scene, Chris did not consent. Thus it was rape, not Yobai, that Yamato carried out, which is extremely OOC for the type of person he is. But since the story is fiction, there are no consequences and it all works out just fine.

No, this is for the best. Having VNs cater explicitly for the Japanese audience assures their continued quality. If the Western market ever becomes even a slight priority, then the quality drops. Sekai is cancer for this reason among others.

Better yet is the almost Dracula-vs-Hellsing dynamic where the metaphysical representation is a demi-being which, if the detective cannot solve the mystery, will come into material existence and utterly reshape reality as a result. Either the detective must figure out the hardest "closed-room" type murders and find the culprit or they have to admit it was the metaphysical being's power and thus doom not only himself but perhaps the world.

I think I once heard someone here say that the reason for this has to do with the kind of story the Japanese prefer. They're less concerned with the details of a story and how it all fits together, and more concerned with the pacing of it and with keeping things going.
Basically as long as there's something happening on screen they're happy, wheras a western audience needs that shit to make some kind of logical sense based on what's already happened. It's also why the Japs don't mind deus ex machina.

That is more or less why I dropped Umineko early on. The first chapter ends with nothing but speculation on what happened beyond fuck you it's magic. Then when the meta narrative begins and Battler has to test his wits against Beatrice, you see an alternate version of events where different people die in diferent ways. The first chapter and anything that happened in it is set aside so we can focus on the new shiny stuff happening in the now. Given the length of the story I didn't want to get caught up reading so much when nothing I'm reading at the moment will be relevant or important by the next chapter. And given the spoilers earlier in the thread, there is no justification for Umineko's length if they were aiming for such a simple ending. The whole story could have been over in 1 chapter if you just cut out the magic nonsense and focused on the whodunit gotta get the old man inheritance part of the story.
