Blizzard decided to write three books dedicated to finalizing the lore of Warcraft. The third book is not even out yet and they've already started retconning them in Legion.
No matter what, Blizzard's writers will always crap on any preexisting writing for the sake of doing what they think is the coolest shit at the moment. This is why WoW writing is such a clusterfuck.
Even they realized fighting Sargeras would be too much, so the ending to Legion is going to somehow have him locked away with Illidan being his warden. Don't even ask me how that makes sense when fighting him doesn't.

Even in Japland where the creators control almost everything, lore still gets shat on often by the creators themselves so I don't see how you can expect the lore in any Murrikan game to be consistent after all those years. Especially in CY+2 where everyone is obsessed with muh deconstruction.

Sargeras is a spirit floating in the Nether after he got booted out of Medivh. That's why they wanted Illidans corpse, to serve as a new host body. Then he started cloning all of the original pantheon (powered by the corrupted Titan from Argus) and brain wash them to bring them to his side (yes, more CORRUPTION shit). Then the players beat them up to un-corrupt them or whatever and power the jail that holds Sargeras. I guess Illidan makes sure everything keeps working.

At least, that's how I understand the Argus raid is supposed to go.
