There are people who purely study ways to kill automated machines, so that's slightly comforting.
Ultimately, the choices are going to be that they are never sentient so we can always out-think them, and they can only operate in fields of manual labour or they are sent off-world and we go Blade Runner-esque on them, banishing them only to zones without humans on them.

CSfag here: making an AI that is very good at Go isn't hard at all. Moves in a game like Go can be represented as a decision tree that branches on each possible move by both players.

So an AI simply just has to search the decision tree for the branch to take that offers the highest chance of winning. If this is too slow, assumptions can be added to speed up the search at the cost of solution optimization.

Basically, for the laymans here, this isn't very much different from when you run a Windows file search.

How is memorization not stragegic? Every strategy ever devised by humans is just a heuristic shaped by memories of countless past encounters. AlphaGo is MORE strategic than we are. Its ability to develop effective strategies isn't compromised by instinct or tradition or preconception. That's why its optimal moves are counterintuitive to humans. We can't even glimpse what the optimal strategies actually are because we're eternally stuck in some local optima.

How would a game that involves chance and randomness preclude the use of algorithms at all? They would wipe the fucking floor with any human in a game involving randomness. AIs are excellent at evaluating probability.

Computers do well at games like chess and go where there are a set amount of moves. They aren't thinking through the game, they are brute forcing each move, going through all the possible steps and selected the "best" one for the current configuration of the game board.

AI currently struggles with a game as simple as Super Mario Bros. AI learning algorithms can sort of play Super Mario bros but only after running through one level a lot of times and has to repeat the process for the next level.

Poker AIs are actually a lot more interesting than the Chess and Go ones since they have to consider their opponents tendencies and make suboptimal moves in order to bluff.

They aren't, though. Bruteforcing Go is impossible, or at least impossible at enough moves in advance to result in competent play. If it was that simple there'd be no need for the machine to learn from human players first and then optimize itself with an adversarial neural network. The machine can play better than any person even in board situations which it has certainly never been exposed to, given the number of possible combinations there are.

So what does thinking through the game actually mean to you? When does something become thinking?

AI struggles with Super Mario because the guy who made those Youtube videos used the most simplistic algorithm imaginable, an evolutionary neural network that just randomly juggles inputs and preserves the successful ones without isolating the principles that make them successful. That isn't the current state of the art in AI.

I think if you made an algorithm that trained itself to identify what pits (and everything else) look like using machine vision, which is really basic stuff by this point, it would be able to learn to play levels it had never seen before without relearning everything. There are only a few dozen different stimuli you can encounter in the game presented in increasingly difficult ways. Maybe the only reason it hasn't been attempted seriously is because everyone in the field already knows how easy it would be.

Actually it's just as strategic as professional Go players because researchers modeled it's approach to go the same way pro players do. The fact it took researchers several years or even decades to figure out that pro Go players simply just ignore bad moves, and that they should model the AI with this line of thinking instead of taking into account every possible move like in Chess is kind of sad in it's own way.
