is vr the future?

No.

nah it hasn't caught on and its grace period for potential adoption rate has passed. It's gonna die in a few years. Just look at 2016's E3. VR was everywhere. 2017: VR was final fantasy 15 fishing. It's dead.

And almost every single bethesda IP

I'm talking about new releases.

It's a new VR release

ff15 fishing is a new game, d44m vr and skyrim vr aren't

VR is for porn. And for visualization and immersion. Not for gaming. It's worse than waggle shit, as far as its utility for gaming goes.

And ff15 fishing will move far fewer units than either, what's your point?

It will be a niche product outside of porn games until they find a way to send your mind into the game.

Technology is still too shit and the price too high. They need to overcome the dizziness, some sort of tactile feedback and a better control system. Shit is still decades away from being viable.

Even a full William Gibson style mid-transfer/full-immersion would not add anything to gaming. It would just make virtual reality a less shitty version of actual reality.

how is that not a great thing?

It is great. And it will make for better entertainment and simulations, but it won't allow us to make more challenging games. Just more immersive ones.

sure have been a lotta vr threads lately
also reminder >>>/vir/ exists

for SJWs games like Gone Home yes

no lol

It's a necessary stepping stone to REAL VR where your consciousness and senses are all hijacked. We have to endure this first and nobody should be hoping it fails, it just needs to live long enough to get research going on the improved version.

More immersion like that would inherently mean more potential for challenge, what the fuck are you talking about
Unless by "challenge" you just mean harder, in which case there's no point in any video game ever that allows the player to win

It could be, though I doubt normal controllers will ever be completely phased out until we have full neural controls. But VR has a big initial hurdle to overcome before it truly becomes great.

Unless we find new ways to control characters in vidya while using VR, then no. So far VR is only used for movies, porn and vidya porn. Nothing else.

I expect it to become a shitty meme. There are going to be some ABSOLUTE faggots who end up wearing them constantly for "augmented reality". For a much larger group of people, seeing these goggles will be a like a neon glowing fedora. You will instantly know someone's a piece of shit if they're wearing these things.

The entire point of VR is to satisfy yourself with something that doesn't exist instead of contributing to something that does. Anyone that uses it is (as more than at most a novelty) is doomed to regression, sorry.

Autohypnosis with it might be cool at some point, but right now the only ones using it for that are fags.

no, good OPs are

Every fucking time.

That webm is pretty funny.

It could have been if it wasnt knee capped by the greed of Faceberg and HTC/Valve.
Maybe in 20 years when we get to go through the VR phase again.

Another +1 for VR porn. It's amazing.

True, CM32 and Honey Select are alright but fucking Japs are still struggling to make functioning games on PC.

Please don't try to give it a quirky name. Remember how "Doot" just got co-opted. Just call it Zenimax Doom.

No, /vr/ is the future.

tbh i just made this threda to post this webm, i dont really care about vr

Something actually related to the thread:
designreboot.blogspot.com/2016/12/youre-getting-vr-wrong-and-not-way-you.html
tl;dr studios need to stop chasing a "wider audience"

It would be a nice parallel industry if the industry wasn't so filled to the brim with weak-willed, money-grubbing pieces of shit.

No.
Anyone who thinks strapping two screens to his fucking face is the future is a fucking moron.
Maybe some other form of "vr" will catch on but I don't think people will completely stop using regular screens because I personally don't like to be completely isolated from the world, and probably more people think like me. Immersion is just a buzzword used by numales.

Who the fuck ever said this?
The only people who would want to do that are supreme autists who don't care about social interaction and are willing to give up the convenience of 2D to have their PC's file tree structured like a goddamn physical library or something

Well, when you say something is "the future" you imply people will stop using the stuff they used before.

Get fucked ludite.

No, you imply there's a future in it
That it has a place in the future
That it will help pave the way for future technologies to some extent
Nobody has ever once fucking said that in the far flung future of 2XXX people will still be strapping oculus rifts to their goddamn faces you idiot

I never asked for any of this. All I ever wanted was to simply see what my character sees, look down and see breasts, look right and see shoulder, look forward and see kleers, none of this wagglan, teleporting, mouse replacement bullshit.

I got a VR headset for $10 from Walmart, and it was pretty shit. I can confidently say that VR is dead and there is no future in it.

The future of porn at least, outside of that, not a chance, i'd just refuse to use any VR shit for anything that is not related to wanking

...

...

Where the fuck is my cindy vr road trip!?

Nah, farthest it'll go is simulator and racing games, and maybe VR Arcades/Rooms, but there's still no realistic way to move around by yourself, so it still fails on any game where you need to use your legs to move.
Not to mention it will always get held back by nu-males who wear glasses and can't handle any intense games.

*and get "motion sickness" from any intense games

Why do you even need a realistic way to move? You niggers have been using sticks and keys to move around for generations now, putting a box on your head doesn't magically erase all that experience. Put sticks your waggle paddle or just use a keyboard and mouse like a proper human bean and problem fucking solved.

Using sticks or keys to move is one of the things that will absolutely fuck people up if the developer doesn't take great pains to design the entire game around reducing it
It's why so many games use that godawful teleport mechanic, it's still much less of a pain in the ass

That's subjective and a shitty opinion. Leave it to Holla Forums to shit on holodeck before its out.

Why would it fuck people up? I never understood why suddenly people start spouting this meme about traditional movement not working when all you are doing is strapping a screen to your face. Again, we are all used to moving this way, there is absolutely no reason why a box on your head just magically makes you a retard who has never played video games before. The only way it would be a problem is if you actually are a retard who has never played video games before, in which case what the absolute fuck are you even doing trying to go balls deep with experimental hardware into something you know nothing about, go play some pong instead.

So you're retarded then
Okay, whatever

Explain it. All you have said is that it doesn't work because it doesn't work and that I am retarded for not listening and believing. There is nothing logical about having a screen closer to your face suddenly making you unable to use a mouse and keyboard.

It sounds like you've never used walking around controls in VR. I bought Arizona Sunshine and played it with friends and you can use the trackpad to move around. At first it is VERY disorienting as you feel like you are moving forward but your body feels no momentum. It's hard at first to get used to it because it fucks up your balance. The same thing happened with a keyboard. Some of my friends just could not stand the lack of balance from it. I got used to it after a few hours but still wonky. Only after a few days did I feel comfortable in it.

Motion sickness, retard
Your problem is that you're just seeing it as a normal screen closer to your face

Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see.

I have only used used the Rift DK1 for a bunch of demos a few years ago. I used a keyboard and mouse and didn't have any problem.
I do not get motion sickness, not everyone does. For people that do get it I can understand, and there should certainly be optional settings for them, but forcing people that don't to play like someone who does is clearly wrong. I don't play games with colorblind correction on because I am not colorblind, I shouldn't have to play with motion sickness mode on. If you get motion sickness then it makes sense to just avoid VR in general. I mean, you don't exactly see people who are highly allergic to bees working as an apiarist now, do you?
And what exactly am I supposed to be seeing a VR headset as if not for what it is? What should I see it as that makes me physically and 100% completely unable to use normal controls to move? Why is it a problem for me to be able to use a VR headset and normal controls without getting sick? Is this some new "you are literally worse than Hitler if you aren't disabled" meme?

I'll answer the thread question.
Well let's think about what kind of industries can hop on. Advertisement companies already have invested millions into creating new venues for product placement and are waiting for that "killer app" to appear so they can slap on a good goy ad.

Video game companies and developers enjoy VR for what it can become and many engines have added support for VR. Lots of games have finally broken millions of dollars of revenue. They are however, not profitable yet.

Consumers would get a kick out of VR if everybody just tried it out once. The problem is that there are morons who just think it's just a screen strapped to your head and don't realize it immerses. So it often gets dismissed as an expensive monitor. There are also tons of technological advancements to cut down prices, go wireless, and increase resolution but it is going as fast as the GPUs are advancing. So in 5 or so more years even at the steady pace that it is going at right now, it will be very consumer friendly.

So yes eventually it will be the future. As of right now with all the money revolving around it, it would take as long as it needs to improve, to fail. So it's here to stay.

I had the same experience running some 30fps Italian house level and also didn't have motion sickness. The thing is that the Oculus and Vive operate at higher frequencies and resolutions that is the bare minimum to fool your mind effectively. Coupled with room scale tracking and you can easily start stumbling around.

I might revise my opinion if I could ever get a chance to try them, but that is certainly true that they may cause problems by being better.

I'm seriously tempted to buy the Rift+controllers 400 euros deal that they have going on. In my country just the Rift without controllers retails for about 700 euros normally so I could even make some profit on it or at least break even if I feel like it.

Same, the 400€ price range is the one where you can finally consider buying shit like this. Though I'm tempted, I'm going to abstain and wait for the 2nd generation. Resolution in current headsets is just one step below from what I want.

I work (as a summer co-op, still finishing up college) at a medium-sized industrial corporation and they're very excited about VR. They hired some random game company and have been dedicating significant internal resources towards creating simulators for training people on their equipment; I don't have any clue if it's good or not (I work in a different department, embedded software), but they seem to think it's worth investing in.

For recreational games, though? I'll believe it when I see it. People have tried VR and 3D shit for as long as I can remember (I'm only in my early 20s, though) and it's always flopped.

Transhumanism.

Transhumanism is shit because the future is clearly trending way more towards genetic engineering than mechanical upgrades
All just more proof that we live in the worst timeline

It doesn't matter where we're heading right now, it's the ancient end games that are slow coming into place. Sure trends happened but the driving force is agendas, that's why we see movies bombing that celebrated.

I wonder if our page still there
