They hire an advertising company who then comes up with a marketing strategy and commericals to go along with it. Then the ad agency pitches the idea to some suits for approval. Now the company probably doesn't give a shit either way. The guides go out and the media follows its rules, and the language that the guide sets forth becomes the default language used to describe everything from science to politics. "Global Warming" to "Climate Change"? AP Style Guide. "They" pronouns? AP Style Guide. There are hundreds more.

The AP Style Guide is the PC Speech Rulebook being forced down our throats by the media.
