Have you ever played against someone? The difference is really big. The game might not have incredibly complex mechanics but there's more depth here than you think. The main point of the game is playing around with different team builds and seeing how efficient they are against other teams. The point is that human players actually know how to do this and use the teams in a way that AI players don't.

The singleplayer aspect of the game isn't really that fun compared to the multiplayer. It's not really fun playing against an AI that isn't complex enough to switch Pokemon in a logical way. And the end game is mostly built around playing in multiplayer. The singleplayer can generally be easily steamrolled through. It's not Shin Megami Tensei where the boss design is actually complex enough to make you think. A player who understands how teams are built can fuck you over easily and you will have far more problems beating him than any trainer in the game.

Smogon has a lot of problems, but in the end, it's a fantastic learning resource. The forums contain a ton of valuable guides to teambuilding and battling. I learned competitive Pokemon on Serebii and Smogon; they teach fundamentals well, regardless of metashit. Discussing in the Showdown chatrooms is also a good way to learn.
Watching videos is good, but I don't know which youtubers are; just watch commentaries till you find one you like. Don't worry if they're Smogon; most techniques you'll pick up will be solid regardless of the meta you play.

If you like any aspect of the game even slightly, don't. Within a week you'll learn about the mechanics and how there's a surprising amount of depth to them, and then you'll learn how gamefreak pisses all the potential away by making retarded decision after retarded decision. They pretend to care about balance with that dumb VGC thing but in reality the number of pokemon that are actually "good" is under 20, evel less if you factor out the ones that are flat out retarded levels of broken. You might think this is a game with a huge number of choices but it's the polar opposite, if you want to have a semi consistent win record you'll find a very small pool to choose from.
