As someone who is 20 hours in my first playthough of NV, count me as someone who is underwhelmed by its gameplay. And the writing is barely keeping me through. Games are not a primarily storyteller medium, it's always mechanics first.

What makes Fallout: New Vegas so great is its focus on player choice and (more importantly) consequence. You can choose to do whatever you want but every important choice comes with an opportunity cost. The gameplay itself is mediocre but the interactions and impacts one can have on the world in unexpected or unintentional ways are the selling points of the game. Forcing the player to question themselves and which path they want to take, even if the changes themselves are miniscule or ultimately inconsequential, still forces the player to slow down and think.

I consider it part of the gameplay as well, but I can understand that some people wouldn't accept dialogue and character interaction as gameplay. That's why I think it's important to state FO:NV is an FPSRPG and not an RPGFPS: It's an RPG with FPS elements, not an FPS with RPG elements. The RPG is more important than the FPS.
Dialogue trees are one of the core mechanics of most RPGs and is one of the things most players look forward to the most in regards to gameplay. In an FPS, player choices and dialogue are practically throwaways or filler. This difference is what I think separates the people who like and dislike FO:NV. To enjoy FO:NV you need to look forward to the dialogue and tolerate the combat, but some people play it looking to enjoy the combat while tolerating the dialogue.

I don't want to say it's possible to play any game 'wrong' but there are certainly mindsets you need to be in to enjoy certain genres. FPS RPG hybrids are always going to be awkward because both genres cater to completely different people.

It's nostalgia and the fact it isn't a Bethesda game. Those are the two big things that make NV get shilled so hard. It has the same shitty engine and many of the same shitty gameplay mechanics of 3 plus new ones like invisible walls on terrain you can easily climb elsewhere and forced linearity until you're at least level 25 because leaving the linear plot path prior to reaching Vegas nets you very high level enemies that can pummel you easily, an absolute ton of weapons that quickly become obsolete before you can even get ahead with them because of the retarded Damage Threshold system (e.g. 9mm becomes useless before you ever find the SMG mag extender mod in stock at stores, .357 is pretty useless outside Old Reddit Blues DLC by the time you can get Lucky from the Bison Steve unless you dump all your points into lockpicking early on, .22lr is understandably t. /k/ a fucking joke long before you get any mods or the SMG available outside of the casino interiors, where the SMG is unavailable anyway even with 100 sneak and "advanced holdout"), a metric fuckton of cut content that was at or near 100% finished like Rotface's questline and the brahmin follower, laughably pathetic "hardcore" mode (outside of water, which you just have to drink some every 30 IRL minutes or so, nothing is ever a concern). Meanwhile the open world is so… empty. In Fallout 3 you can do some walking between locations and pretty regularly find some combat along the way at familiar places. New Vegas? After a certain point it's like 90% of encounter locations stop spawning anything for no apparent reason and all you're left with is some mutant locations, some powder gangers that never left level 1 near Goodsprings, and all there is for entertainment while traveling is the chance of an assassin party showing up if you piss off one of the two major factions. Meanwhile, you end up at this point and without the ability to really progress follower questlines because you easily get to this point in the time it takes to max out two followers, and all the DLCs block followers out so you don't even get a chance then.
It just has more dialogue and less of an issue with fire rate caps, though that might be because my most recent experience there is modded. Oh, and most of the soundtrack is just copy/pasted from the first two games for muh nostalgia, despite having Inon Zur write new music for the game. Oh, and it's not Bethesda so popular opinion in certain hiveminds says it's automatically good because reasons.
It's enjoyable enough and as always massively improved by mods, but it gets shilled as one of the greatest games of all times because muh dialogue muh not Bethesda.

Fuck fast travel, that shit is only good if you need to make a quick trading stop. You miss a fuckton of shit by fast traveling. Random encounters, chances at experience, opportunities to explore areas you might not otherwise see.

I only use fast travel to get resupplies or to dump loot, really. Also, in those cases where I don't want to trudge across the whole map for a small quest. Twice.

Have never played a fallout game before, and actually have never really played anything on a really good gaming PC. Can I hook up a OS 4 or x box one controller? I know, trashy form,, but have never played before on a gaming pc with a 34 inch monitor, titan graphics card, and newest intel chip. The (re)introduction of DT alone improves the combat remarkably and then changes like the introduction of proper handloads and actual variety in generic enemies rather than just generic 'raiders' etc help also. Then you have upgrades like not having to use the fucking underground to travel everywhere, meaningful companion quests, hardcore mode, effective disguises etc etc.

NV is still a game very much held back by the shitty engine and Obsidian's inability to plan to a schedule/Bethesda's fucking with their work but to claim it is only an improvement over FO3 in terms of writing means you're either ignorant or deliberately ignoring what it added.

It's graphically ugly, the gunplay is sub-par, the map is too small and cramped, the game is buggy as hell, and the engine is a 14 year old mess made of twigs and duct tape. But at the end of the day it's really special to me and most other people here.
