I loved that you actually had to search cabinets and enemies and it took some time to actually do it.

The respawning enemies were dumb but there was a trick to it if I'm not mistaken, which was that enemies would come across dead friends and pour acid on them which made the model disappear. This would trigger another enemy to appear on the map. If I recall correctly, you could stop the guards from destroying the corpses and more or less clear the levels of enemies.

A sequel in today's age would be disastrous I think because I don't trust anyone to just make a quirky spy game without injecting [current year] identity politics into it.

Going to second that warning, it isn't just inferior to the previous games: it's an outright bad shooter in its own right.

Deus Ex is an FPS-RPG, NOLF is an FPS with mild stealth elements. They are hardly comparable (for example shitting on a pure-RPG like DX for having much clunkier combat than NOLF would be silly). That said:
It does get better after you leave Morocco and actually get some choices in equipment/playstyle. In fact the first hour or two almost made me quit playing also.

I recently tried this out, too. I didn't much care for it. The humor didn't quite click with me.

Also, the enemy AI is on par with what I expect from early Monolith, that is, absolute shit. Camera sees you? Hive mind AI knows exactly where you are. Shoot a suppressed pistol away from enemies? Enemies know exactly where you are. Enemies also do that Shogo/Blood 2 thing where they can shoot you when they're turning, even if they're not facing you. Enemies also go from unaware to fully alert and firing within an instant. Thief figured this out two years prior. Oh, and man is this game ever boring.

I did install NOLF2, and it looks a lot better graphically, and is a good deal more polished. I'll try that out. I hope it's not as dogshit as the first game.
