Turn based combat reached its final form some time ago. The JRPGs that come out today are as advanced as it gets. Real time action is where its going to be and its here to stay.
I will say that im relieved CyberConnect2 isnt handling it anymore. Id rather an outright copypaste of KH than whatever theyd shit out. Despite that though, my hopes are still quite low. Episodic killed it before it even had a chance, and then we all know the only reasons this came about was because; A. The financial hole Square dug themselves into with repeated XIII releases, and B. Knowing ahead of time that XV was a financial failure (hence the enormous amount of tie-in products).
I await the day they reach the point where their next Final Fantasy will be the first all over again; their last game before goin down in flames.

It's set up so you can act up to four times per character at max per turn, but each turn takes off 1 AP, which only regens at 1 per turn and you can only have a max of 3 (or 5 with late game set ups) and can go down to -3. The majority of the fun late game strategies revolve around denying the enemy AP while granting yourself a ton, a notable exploit being a red mage skill that grants you 2 AP per status proc'd, but it's calculated in such a way that if the spell hits you will gain the AP, even if you already have the ailment, meaning one of your party members will constantly be casting poison on your poisoned dudes to give them infinite turns. The job system is really robust as well, more so than even FFT with tons of abilities interacting in interesting ways.

Shame that Bravely Default fucks itself in the ass in the second half with the fucking loops.

Expect brilliant minigames cut, brilliant moments twisted or discarded, unnecessary out of place monologues/scenes inserted, probably even some materia/summons/limit breaks cut as well, things dumbed down, things shortened, locations cut, no controllable airship, etc. etc.

As to the content of the game itself, nothing they have shown of the remake, so far, has instilled any confidence in me toward the final product. They took VII and injected a whole mess of XIII and XV, to my eyes. And AC. Prepare for more "deep" Cloud, I guess. The whole business leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I hope they don't do the same to the XII remake that's in the works.

There's a lot of cool turn based shit, whether in the classic lines-of-guys format or more terrain and tile based variations. A good number of mechanics used in these titles went nowhere, and nobody else picked them up. Even the mechanics that did go somewhere often didn't go as far as they could have. Meanwhile, action based JRPGs get more and more hampered by their rpg mechanics as time goes on. I'd rather just play dmc and smt separately than do this half-assed shit where we take only the most basic bitch aspects of each and cram them into some fanfic tier trash
