I'd say so, I always keep going back to it as it still holds up quite well. It's still very playable except for a bit of dicking around with resolutions at first, the fix and most mods are on the subsim site. Modding is still pretty active but you should probably play vanilla first and figure out how deep you want to go with realism.

Oh fuck yes. It's on Steam for 10 bucks. The game is essentially the pinnacle of submarine simulation in the same way Republic Commando is the pinnacle of squad shooters. Both are a bit dated, but their gameplay has never been matched. But both lack widescreen support, so I keep a XP machine with 19" 4:3 monitor around.

Silent Hunter III has allows you to edit variables such as torpedo availability date, ammunition storage, and crew fatigue stats. If you crave realism, go for it. If you want a 105mm deck gun with 900 rounds, go for it. If you want SpySat ability so you can see all convoys at all times, go for it.

Silent Hunter IV builds on SH3 with better graphics, but shitty attention to detail and miserable UI.

Silent Hunter 5 is an abortion with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Even mods can not fix this football bat.

I wish there was a way to disable water reflections in SH3, I get an annoying glitch which concentrates all the reflection textures in a band near the left corner of the screen. I read this is only a problem with Integrated graphics

SH5 is shit. It requires mods to be playable at all. Performance is shit, game is broken, but it's fucking comfy to walk around your sub. It's better than any trucking game, and can be your next crack if you like to sit around and listen to your engines rattle as you sail the seas.
Ubishit pushed it out of development far too early to use it as a testbed for their shitty always online DRM.
SH4 is also comfy, but the focus on the Pacific is shit. It works well performance wise, and with a couple of mods and an expansion pack (which you should pirate) you can play in the Atlantic with comfy missions.
SH3 is honestly quite old and has aged badly. It needs mods to work properly on newer systems, but it is mechanically the best. You can get extreme realism mods installed, and do absolutely nerve wrecking convoy assaults.

diluvion turned out pretty meh. i pirated it and never finished it. it was just an arcadey game. On the other hand that one that just came out cold waters seems to be pretty good with its cold war turns hot scenario but you can't play russians, only glorious american nuclear submarines. maybe a russian mod in the future since the game supports mods
