How many people do you think it would take to operate one nuclear plant that's going to take the place of like 40k solar panels or wind tubines? It takes hardly any people, any land, any big deal construction. It's objectively bad for business. But if it were up to me I'd want my country to be way ahead of the curve so we don't have to worry about it while producing that garbage for other countries to buy.

And it sucks because everyone thinks they don't want a nuclear plant in their neck of the woods but I really don't think those people will be any happier when you're bulldozing forests for gigantic wind and solar farms that don't have a steady power output from day to day or even over the course of a day. Most nuclear accidents have come from military experimental and breeder reactors and from critical assemblages. Civilian power reactors are comparatively much safer, Chernobyl, Fukushima, that one in China, and Windscale aside. Three Mile Island was a mild oops. That said I wouldn't want any of the old style reactors around me, for several reasons, but the new types probably wouldn't be so bad if they could be scaled down to community size reactors rather than regional monstrosities.

Chernobyl was the guys running the plant being colossal retards and shutting off every single failsafe they had.
Fukushima was extreme circumstances, and even then that one stayed together.

It works like this:

Natural uranium is mined from the ground and chemically/physically processed to separate U235 from U238. U235 is hot shit, and when concentrated can make atom bombs. When diluted with some purified U238 it can be used as reactor fuel. Pure U238 with no U235 in it is called "depleted Uranium" and is basically a harder, heavier version of Lead.

U235 gives off neutron particles, which smack into the other U235 atoms nearby and split them apart, releasing heat, radiation, and more neutrons that can split more U235. To make U235 "burn", all you have to do is stick enough of it close together. At a carefully separated distance with some other barriers, it burns slow and produces heat for electricity. Smashed together all at once really fast, it makes a nuclear explosion.

Well something interesting happens if you take that depleted U238 and stick it inside a nuclear reactor to cook. It soaks up a bunch of those leftover neutrons and breaks down into a new material: Plutonium. Plutonium happens to be much more powerful than U235 and is GREAT for bombs. So most reactors in the US were built with this idea in mind.

Well, to use that Plutonium for bombs it has to go through a lengthy chemical purity process. All those spent acids and funky chemicals and shit that get used to do this, all come out of it radioactive as fuck. This is nightmare-level nuclear waste - basically thousands of gallons of flesh-eating super acid that is also lethally radioactive for a million years.

If you're NOT making bombs, the main waste leftovers from a nuclear reactor are Uranium 238 (because all the U235 it was mixed with was burned up) and a bunch of funky radioactive metal bits. Like the zinc tubed that hold the uranium in place. These get zapped inside the reactor and turn radioactive too. But they're not hard to get rid of. Bury them somewhere safe and after some years they're basically harmless.

The U238, on the other hand, is often stuck back inside another reactor to cook into Plutonium. In the old days this was for bombs, but nowadays they can dilute this Plutonium and actually use it for reactor fuel in a different kind of reactor. So less waste, and more fuel.

Only we don't have many of this kind of reactor, because filthy hippies. And this spent fuel waste is slowly building up, which doesn't make anyone happy.
