I'm still trying to figure out how games bloat their PC requirements

I mean how does a game that looks like that get all the way up to a 16GB installation size? And compared to the other 3 games below it, it requires 2 more GB of Ram to run it and it can't run on something older than Windows 7 like the others can. I'm sort of stumped a game like that requires that much more out of your PC because it doesn't really look the part IMO.

Uncompressed audio, HD movies, and high resolution sprites/backgrounds are what can bloat a game's size. But the uncompressed audio can take up a large chunk of space on a game.

Most people just put minimum as the weakest PC they tested on, which is in no way representative of the truth

HDD size specifically is just inflated because of the unpacking process on top of using loads of uncompressed assets to begin with.

...

...

ITS HUGE

THAT MEANS IT HAS HUGE CONTENT

...

it's HD movies with obscene bitrates so that they don't display compression artifacts, a 1 minute scene can take up to 1 gb, as i discovered in MK X. that game must have at least 25 GB of only movies,

i don't know what retarded Brazilian with 56kbps internet came with the idea that the size was an antipiracy measure. I live in a rural are in a shitty country and the service goes from 10mb minimum all the way to 200mbps

RIP AND TEAR!

I remember reading that Vanquish has 16 gb of video and only 2 of actual game.

CUT AND SELL YOUR CONTENTS

Most modern devs are incompetent fucks who do not how to optimize their games for shit.
Thanks China.

how low can you go

...

Man I'd been trying to find this for ages. Cheers, user.

Depending on the game I saw up to 20 gb cutscenes folder

I am sure i pirated it in less than 100mb, this must be some virus or full of DirectX and Visual C Redistributables, or someone included the OST in a bloated bitrate like 320kbps

For the installation size, its no longer a mystery. You know how this shit takes 50gb normally? The lossless videos alone take almost 19gb,

It's probably in .flac.

That's what you get when devs don't have to fit it into cd/dvd.

What the fuck man.

Why is this board filled with so many non-native English speakers?

Because half of the fucking world plays vidya and learns english to play vidya.

Poor optimization due to quick development, big teams working on each game thus no unity within the development. Uncompressed audio files that bloat the hell out of everything. Uncompressed textures. Generally, just abusing the much more powerful hardware instead of optimizing the games. The depressing thing is Bethesda games are usually pretty well optimized for toasters but they're a buggy mess and Gamebryo is utter cancer.

...

Its textures and audio.
Modern games also forgo any compression which is why you can see pirate repacks which can cut the game to half the size but with a 10 minute or so decompression time.
A good example of this is Mad Max, the game needs 32 gigs for the files out of which I assume 20 need to be downloaded.
You can find repacks which reduce the size to 4GB.

what

Skyrim was 5gb at release.

FTFY

How about this. How about we just get all the game files, right, and we go and put them in a big 7zip archive and set the compression to the top. Then when the customer buys the game they dont have to download 50 gig.

...

Why do you care though? All that matters if the game is good and runs well.
I don't mind it being 200 gigs as long as I'm having fun.
This is a shit fucking "game", despite all the TECHNOLOGY behind it. What does it matter if it weights under 1 mb if it's not fun?

Textures use in-memory compression like dxt, no reason not to ship in that format. Especially on consoles where you know exactly what the supported features are.
Videos can be encoded with high-quality settings with no perceptible loss, cutting 50-75% compared to raw. Alternatively devs could go back to making actual games instead of interactive movies.
Other assets could be compressed with a good seekable format. It's literally faster to read a gzip stream and deflate in real-time than it is reading the same uncompressed data, since disk io is the bottleneck, even with SDDs.

Meanwhile, Kero Blaster is smaller than 2 MB.

Its retards like you willing to settle for anything less than excellence what the market is flooded with both shit games and shitty unoptimized games.

Its fine if you want to be a retard, you can't help that. But when you want to take your retardation, put it on a pedestal and pretend you're a genius that you need to be told to fuck off.

...

I only care about excellence in gameplay, why should I count fucking megabytes? It doesn't affect shit.

So yeah, keep crying.

Nice formatting too.

...

I still remember when Oblivion first came out and ran like shit even on top-end machines.

waiting for a 18 GB patch to download will stop you from playing the "excellence in gamplay"

1 - I'd rather wait now and play a better game later, than play some dogshit now without waiting
2 - get better internet

I'm sorry but 50gb for around 6-8 hours of gameplay should not be acceptable.

double checked
How?!

Retards like you are why Nividia are able to bribe devs into crippling their games on AMD cards, or why we have crippling DRM systems that'll nuke a game the moment the servers go down.

Only caring about "fun" in games is like only caring about taste in food.

haha lol just get better internet! Servers are always available and never overloaded and no one ever loses their internet connection or literally cannot buy a better package due to their ISP holding a pseudo-monopoly XD.

Is this poorfag general?

Why?

Pfffhahahaha.

Now compare that to Witcher 3 which is just 22 GB

from my experience:
this is only true when it s about Russian porn sand box sim game with QSP
and rpg maker game (just substract about 200-300mb of common assets)

how is 320 kbps bloated, it's standard audio quality for mp3. Anything less than 320kbps i would consider bad quality.

...

Yeah bittorrent protocol was SPECIFICALLY designed to move around large amounts of data.

If there's just a few people with seedboxes a 50Gb game can be downloaded in a afternoon.

I have a dumb ass friend that believes this.

...

Incompetence, incompetence, incompetence.
Also lazyness.

Modern PCs have become so powerful game devs feel safe enough that they, by and large, don't give a shit about optimization. Why bother? It costs the publisher more dev time and time is money.
Back in the day, if your game was a piece of trash, that'd be the end of it. Good luck trying to make another game, cause your shit just tanked. "Just buy more hardware" is apparently something the normalfags fall for these days.
It's disgusting.

We're going to see an entire generation of developers both indie and AAA who don't know fucking shit about optimizing their games, and that bloat is normal because, hey, if it runs like shit just download more RAM lol.

Ha yeah PS3 led the way with dual layer bluray.

Language/voice packs for irrelevant countries?

I'm not a native English speaker but I've used the language daily since I was 12. Most people on this planet live in non English speaking countries you know?

why spend a month optimizing when your loving customers will just buy a new gpu.

games require double their install size on every platform. It's not hard to understand.

You have an installer that is 7.2GB compressed, but the game is 8.3GB once it's installed. The compressed version and the installed version must exist simultaneously, and once the install version is 100% present on your local storage, the compressed installer is deleted.

the ubisoft guy isn't wrong.

are you complaying about the use of octet instead of byte ?

or this is just ignorance about kibioctet/byte mebioctet/byte gibioctet/byte etc thinking he should say Kilo ?

also
get some fucking geography lesson

the world isn t murica only.

Jesus Christ. Ubisoft can't die fast enough. I hope that hostile takeover goes through and that jew runs them into the fucking ground. Fucking frogs.

...

Here's the 14 year old who's never paid for anything in his life.
Because those 50gb can be compressed down to 10gb of download size quiet easily, and if companies actually tried to maximise what they can do in the smallest storage possible it would inadvertently push out women and minorities from all aspects of game creation. Programming would have to be optimized to run in less code so we wouldn't get shit like yandev's fucking 20 if statements within each other (thereby improving performance, as well as causing less bugs since less code = easier to test = easier to fix). Art and graphical direction would be pushed away from trying to squeeze in 50 more polygons for muh realism and cause more games to create interesting designs and be stylised or work within the limitations of the storage space if they want to get realistic graphics even though in 5 years they'll look like shit anyway. It would also make games run better since you wouldn't be able to shove shit tons of high resolution graphics everywhere.
Adding a cap on storage space would save video games
Have fun with your Nvidia 10extra shekels that will get fucked over by software updates when Nvidia releases their next set of cards so you'll upgrade, goyim.

...

Where do you think we are?

Nier:automata from 40 Gigs to 10 just compressing ingame movies from insane bitrate

...

That does not surprise me.
Why do devs still use pre-rendered animations? They won't hold up in a decade while in-game cutscenes will always look good since they scale with the resolution.

...

Name 2 good games then

You'll just call them shit without explanation. Fuck off.

...

...

Newfaggotry aside, just look at it. It's a niglet spitting words in the most simian way possible. How can you think this is serious?

Consider the following: Don't consider the distribution of chiptunes in audio file formats (.mp3, .flac, .ogg, etc) rather than in chiptune/notation formats acceptable at all.

...

That was my point.

>>>/reddit/

Prerendering lets consoles do cutscenes at high resolution/FPS when they would normally suffer.

Why other languages bother you?

Oh, look at that. Captcha couldn't be more relevant

KILL YOURSELF KIKE

Actually, he didn't have a choice. Game Maker doesn't support MIDI anymore for some fucking raisin.

Just think of all those ps3\360 UE3 games that were 16Gbs but only had 4 hours of campaing and everything looked the same. What they had in commom? Pre rendered cutscenes every 20 minutes which looked way worse than the game graphics on PC.

TLDR: Thanks, capitalism!

lol
Fuck off to your containment board.
>>>Holla Forums

Are you really this mad at the facts? Big business is killing vidya.

And communism will save it?

save it?
who said anything about saving it?

Communism is the jew's golem, whether it pushes corporatism or destruction doesn't matter.

Pirates cut the bloat down by doing what the devs should've done when they were developing the game.

To fill a cup with piss, you can either piss into the cup or piss into a rainwater drainage system after you replaced the water tank with a cup.

Odd how game companies still fail to provide better service than the pirating does. I'm still surprised we don't see more games on GOG than we do now, I simply am not buying games any more games on Steam.

Granted, I'm sure some incompetent development results in shitty optimization and file compression for games on GOG too just like Steam. But at least with GOG you can stuff those installers on an external drive and not have them take up space on your computer.

...

Zero Compression
Incidentally with experimenting I managed to chop off about 70% of my game's total size by cheating and using the lighting system to color all the textures.

It's a meme, but that doesn't mean it also isn't true. For my own part, I think they bloat these games on purpose for psychological reasons. Customers are are used to paying $60 for 50GB games (80GB after patches/f2p microtransaction dlc) are going to balk at the idea of a $20 game that's only a few MB in size. We have this weird expectation of equivalency, so these companies bloat their games up to justify the higher pricetag without actually giving you anything to justify that space.

You're still 14 tho

How's that cheating? You're trading performance for memory, if it's an effective trade then good on you but it's not uncommon

having stupid amounts of copy pasted code can run more efficiently than using proper oop/functions. i doubt it adds much to the size bloat anyway.

steam can hold your library across multiple drives

Because there is detail that isn't actually there?

It is there in the rendered product, all lighting that isn't baked into textures could be called cheating by that tack

that right there.

Why buy a new GPU when you can just not buy ubisoft?

It's a win/win

/thread

As already said, it's a mix of lack of optimization and to try tricking people into thinking more Gb means more content. Does anybody else thinks one of the many reasons the industry is shit is because they don't really have to be creative to deal with limitations anymore like they used to do? For example there's no storage issues like before when they had to sweat to cram all they wanted into a tiny cartridge. I think having actual limits contributed a lot for creativity because it forced them into finding new ways to do more with less

The only thing worse than the jew is the baguette. I wish they had their own little holocaust after napoleon was defeated.

and to think once upon a time along long time ago they made good games.

"Why would I want better games, the surface level I'm seeing is fine!"
You're as dumb as people who defend DRM and platform exclusivity.

For the same reason games still struggle to deliver good options menus and customization not that I know that either aside from laziness or the project being messy under the hood

you could at least pretend to fit in.

I don't watch the office and I don't go to reddit but okay, fuck me for using some random picture in my reaction images from literal years ago.

It works though. I've skipped pirating games that seem to have bloated installs.

Still seems like a dumb move overall though because I actually buy games I've pirated if I like them enough. Now there is no chance these bloated games will ever get my money.

nice filename

Huh never thought of that before. I can sense a eerie feeling creeping in, in the future this practice of bloating your game will start being aggressively pushed by both normalfags and companies. The bigger the filesize the bigger the game.

It is? Nigga I downloaded it from here, if you want to be paranoid as fuck and shit up a perfectly thread be my guest but I'd rather shit on people who're willing to ignore the entire industry going to shit because the gameplay happens to be good.
If you want to derail that's fine but I'll focus on getting us further from smartphone games instead of spending posts over a reaction pic.

Honestly I'd see this backfiring more than anything, people on some level can see content for what it is. It's why most folks don't play mission packs, it doesn't register to them as worth their time because there's no cutscenes and the like.

Glad to see Pixel never gave up on his roots.

I would like to see you tell the difference between 320kbps and V0 VBR. 320kbps is a stupid middle ground, either use V0 if you want the same (ie basically imperceptible) quality at a lower bitrate, or go for FLAC if you're willing to spend more disk space.
Games should be using Vorbis or Opus for music anyway.

As a wannabee dev I worry about this sometimes. The games I want to make I feel should fit in spaces ranging from a couple megabytes, to maybe a few hundred megabytes at the most. The hundreds of megabytes ones I think would be fine, but I can just see some retard even on Holla Forums going "hurr why would I pay for 5 megabytes that's like 10 jpgs"

Give me am demo and complain no

Actually make demo presentn ble.

This really is reddit.

MP3 in general is "bad" quality, it's perfectly fine to use it but to say it's unnoticeable in any setting is fucking retarded. It's also true that V0 VBR is worth the file size savings from 320 kbps CBR.
Opus is a really good lossy codec though, easily the best and I recommend it. The only issue is the high cpu usage so it might be a mobile phone battery killer.

Also forgot to mention: Vorbis is objectively better than MP3 and you should use it over mp3 whenever you can, but if you're looking to play your audio on a shitty blu ray player from 2004 or a soundbox with an USB port mp3 might be your only choice.

and bad coding too

I bet you don't even know what temporal and spatial locality are

Pretty much now that you are your friends are here.

I'm going to assume you don't actually know any programming languages, but big code and bad code are not in any way related.
Having whatever you make translate to less machine code, or even less instructions doesn't necessarily mean it'll get done faster.
Also this isn't floppy disk days, sure you can make bloated programs that are bigger but when it comes to a game that's the smallest source of your file size worries.

Nobody has made that argument however. That said I've been noticing a worrying trend of increasingly poor garbage collection in newer releases.

This game fit on a floppy disk. It was like 2mb.

...

Back in my day you could fit a thousand shareware games on a single CD-ROM. They weren't full games, but they were mostly all original engines with original graphics, music and sound.

Going for more than a simple image tends to help when establishing that someone is or isn't from somewhere else on an user image board, dipshit.

I can fit a portable install of GZdoom and like 20 solid wads on a flash drive disguised as a pen.
Most modern games will never remotely approach this, I think it's safe to say, simply because they didn't have to work from limitations at any given point.

The industry hates GOG.

The industry wants 2 things that Valve provides:

DRM
Data

There's a reason why there's now a GOG client.

I love when a filename detective outs himself as a newfag.
8ch changed its pic filenames from first pic related to second pic related recently, you colossal dipshit

One thing I don't understand is how some modern pixelshit games have higher system requirements than Crysis. I mean how the fuck is that possible?

Stupid useless filters, negative optimization and sit coding.

How about this game: The Silent Age.

3.5 Gigabytes

Got it for 99 cents, so I can't complain, but for a game like this I expect 200MB or something. And mostly because of the background music.

It's not even an issue unless your internet connection is shit. Personally I refuse to be held back by 3rd worlders/poorfags and devs feel the same. When I pay for a game I want the best. Dual audio, 1080p fmv, 4k textures, dolby. Fill up that bluray.

Yeah that's what I always dislike about people. Sooner or later it's all about community, fitting in and us vs them. Even on a anonymous chan.

Best part? You can get past gen games that were ported to ps4 and get sensible size with not much of a downgrade in graphics. Usually the game is more polished too.

...

If the garbage collection is too good on a modern game, the game will break.

And it's always the people most vocal about getting rejected somewhere that end up most active in trying to exclude others wherever they move to.
