AFAIK, Tekken 7 has said they will be doing DLC. Returning characters are free, while future guest characters will be paid DLC. The character Eliza, who was a pre order bonus, will be DLC in a month.

From a technical perspective, it's a great fighter. Replacing the Bound combo mechanic with the new Screw combo mechanic gave bamco a chance to re-design character combos, which, in conjunction to a lot of move property changes, let them balance out what was already considered to be a very balanced game.

Rage now triggers a little earlier and has a bit more utility in this game, as it can trigger your critical art, but will spend it. Critical arts are typically launch punishable by all the cast, with a few exceptions - for example, Jin's has enough block pushback to prevent punishes from some characters.

Fighting games typically have stories which are goofy, serious and interesting all at the same time and Tekken's story mode is a fun way to get into it. Customisation is back to its best after tag 2's abortion of a customise mode. They have good looking options for male characters as well which is nice.

All in all, if you like tekken, go ahead and join the frantic mayhem that is online mode, with scrubs all over the place for the first two weeks or so its good fun. The one good takeaway from Tag 2 was the fantastic netcode.

Otherwise, wait for a sale or something I guess.

Assume no. There might be a way to turn off some funky feature to reduce it like there was with SF5, but it wont be how tournaments are run.

This is probably my biggest gripe with modern fighting games. Sadly, the days of the arcade are more or less past us.

Not that it's a fighting game, but fucking EA did it really well with Fight Night Champion and Fifa 17. It's similar to fighting game story modes, where you watch a cutscene then play a game, but they build good set pieces and really get you invested into the game.

Like in Fight Night, you're constantly being fucked by a corrupt boxing promoter who pays off judges and referees, which forces you to win by knockout, for example. It really gets you into it and makes you want to succeed.

I thought this came out years ago.

Haven't played since maybe Tekken 3 and the only new character I like to any capacity is Alisa Bosconovitch (and that's because of the movie, not the games)

Tekken 3 is only ranked the highest because it's the one most people became familiar with. Comparing these two games T7 is superior in mechanics and core gameplay, there is no contest there. Even T6 is superior to T3 and I urge people to go and play T3 after playing T6 or T7 for a while to see what I mean. Nostalgia is the master of tricks so don't go comparing based off memory nearly 20 years ago.

A personal nag I have on T7 is my man Kazuya got nerfed a bit which is annoying. Some of his moves like his down forward LP then RP doesn't have the same impact it did in T6. Also his devil transformation isn't that effective in combat due to only being able to transform during rage. Personally I would prefer Devil Kazuya to be his own character again because his utility in this current setup isn't very useful. Kazuya's poise attack is a good addition (even though this poise attack system is built into all characters) but overall Kazuya hasn't really been expanded on in any substantial way, not in the way he was from T5 to T6.

T5DR was a great update to T5 but it's not the best. What happened with T6 is that the bound system changed things up into a system that I think a lot of the new players hated because of how owned you could be by it. I know how frustrating it is when you have to up your game but once you've cracked it there was this high risk high reward element to Tekken that had never been there before. Not only that but it was incredibly rewarding to pull off a massive bound combo especially on the more difficult bound characters (like Kazuya).

Now that the bound system is gone with the release of T7 maybe all the butthurt folk from T6 will love the series again because it's more lenient. I'll miss the system but understand that if you can bring something new to the table to replace it that's equal or better then I'm fine with that. The rage system is a great comeback mechanic that will easily please casual players.

The moves are boring, doesn't feel responsive enough, only the amped up hyper speed fights it occasionally throws up in arcade mode felt anything like the right pace, it's soulless, minus the bears, King and like 3 other faces it could be any other 1v1 fighting title out there. Utterly disposable.

it has less gimmicky single player stuff than earlier games & not everyone's character made it in coming from tt2 that's not surprising though the customization is lacking.
the actual game is very fun though, the most fun i've had with vidya in a long while. it seems like a large amount of the negativity being directed at it has less to do with the core game itself and more just grievances people have had with AAA publishing for close to a decade at this point.
the biggest problem right now is that ranked is broken on ps4 ranked is broken in pretty much every other relevant fighting game on the market atm

basically if you want a good current gen fighting game with solid netplay and a large playerbase, this is one of the two options you have available. if you want fun gimmicky singleplayer stuff, emulate the older tekken games and skip this one if you don't care about locals or online.

Yeah Tekken 7 is turning out to be the best, but the criticism of Tekken 6 bound system is purely subjective. I have no problem with the back to basics in T7 as the bound system wasn't a popular evolution of the game plus the new mechanics are a good replacement, just know that some of us will miss it.
