In Knights of the Old Republic, you could turn a sith ghost to the light side, by listening to him and assuring him that it's never too late to make a change for the better. He was just a background character, though, not really a villain, as he was already dead and was just haunting the place. Can't think of many games that really let you do this that haven't already been mentioned, and I haven't played most of the games that were mentioned.

So basically you're the Dream Traveler and you venture into new worlds when you sleep, this one being Lunatea. The only way to enter a world is when an individual desperately calls out to you. This voice grows more desperate throughout the game and you barely have any memories of who you actually are.

You go through the game ringing belltowers and collecting elements from kingdoms based on these states of mind: Tranquility, Joy, Discord, and Indecision. Through other plot stuff, another world appears and you venture over to it. You meet The King of Sorrow who gives his story of isolating himself and the Kingdom of Sorrow from the world when people, despite feeling several emotions, wanted to deny and forget sorrow. He then states you must atone for the sins of the world and tries fighting you by throwing you into his infinite dimension, with Klonoa escaping.

Being isolated from the world for so long, he is literally only capable of feeling sorrow. So Klonoa combines all of the elements into his ring to fight him again. The King finally loses it and goes berserk during this fight. After being beaten, he starts crying and again begs for help from Klonoa, revealing that he's the one that called him to Lunatea for help all along. Klonoa helps him by ringing the belltower and receiving the element of sorrow, forcing the kingdom back into the normal world.

Afterwards you get this cutscene where they reconcile. The King finally smiles again right before dying in Klonoa's arms

After the events of the game, the credits show the king has been reincarnated and born into the normal world, now able to go through life feeling every emotion.

They just met the only other person in the world who understands them.
