They're delaying it until 2018 for one very good reason. They were originally looking to launch in September-October but then Monster Hunter was slotted for an August release date.
One month is too short of a time for Monster Hunter to move units. They want those Nips to buy Switchs and Monster Hunter for Christmas and let them get addicted to it on their new console before pulling the rug out from under them and demanding money.

It depends on if they make both virtual console games and Switch games have universal online in both online and local modes, have support for up to the Wii for console and 3DS for handheld, actually get rid of friend codes, completely redo the OS, allow for basic online interaction such as joining seamlessly with friends, and being able to do everything except voice chat in the system.

When Xbox did it back in 2002, they actually had already futureproofed their console to be more adaptable to being an online console. Having only an ethernet port so that all players HAD to have high speed internet (a decision that I could easily imagine Holla Forums bashing back then, since many probably could only afford dial-up, because God knows that there were still more people than not between 1998-2002 still playing Quake, Counter-Strike, Diablo, etc, on dial-up), packaging every single Xbox Live starter kit with a microphone so that everyone who had the service had the ability to voice chat, and being able to play all online games on the console under a single account with friends lists that expanded beyond just one game. The PS2's online affair was not nearly as developed, and it showed. Ever play SOCOM? If you have, then you remember how the voice channel would get routinely hijacked because voice chat was so rudimentary then that only one person could speak at a time.

Point being: Microsoft put out a product that was superior in every way to their competitors in terms of what it offered. As a result, people bought in to it and the subscription fee.

Fire Emblem Fates isn't one game broken into three, like you characterize. The websites says "Each title in the Fire Emblem Fates series is a complete game." The only reason people were pissed off about the limited edition version was that it proved Nintendo could have put all three on a single cartridge but simply chose not to for general release. Besides, the amount of money you would have spent, discounts and all, exactly adds up to how much the Limited edition version ended up being priced:

$40.00 for one game plus $40 for both the discounted versions of the two other games, both of which are $20, and you get $80. The Limited Edition's MSRP was $79.99.

The point being that Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations were three separate games, and not add-ons.

Whereas on the 360 and PS3 (and Vita), when you redeem your game, the give you the full usage rights as if you had paid retail. On the Xbone and PS4, you lose access to your library of "free" games the moment you let your subscription lapse.

Most of the people interested in those titles probably already have them somewhere, possibly multiple copies in multiple systems even plus emulation.
Everyone else is not likely to be interested in them or even think those games are worth more than a dollar.

They only have 4 points in that list to support their online fee.
Online Gameplay will matter only for people playing online and the "Voice App" doesn't seem to be done very well by western standards (people sometimes forget Nintendo sells to Japan as well, where smartphone is king over the PC)
Classic game selection has the problem I highlighted and it's really not something you buy an entire year to get a sweeter deal.

Only thing left is "eShop deals" which is a very iffy thing.
Deals are essentially a corporation cutting down their own profit, hoping to make it back somewhere else or somehow differently.
So I honestly don't expect "10% discount on all purchases if you are paying our fee!" as that'd mean you'd be able to break even by buying a certain amount of games (although that's a valid strategy).
More likely they'll use "deals" to sell games that aren't as popular and need the extra help, so it will serve themselves or the devs more than the players.

This is conjecture of course, but I sure hope they fix their shit and put out something better.
I own a Switch and I'm not too keen on online play (although I'll still give Splatoon a go) and if this is all they have going for it, count me out.

One thing that'd surely help would be their store selling WiiU and Wii games for the Switch. There's a fuckload of people that didn't bought a WiiU because "it doesn't have enough games, let's wait a bit more". I'd be one of them and I missed a lot of fun games because of that, games that I'd buy for half the price they were before to play now.

This. Emulation pretty much makes offering Nes/ Snes/ Etc. titles when you buy online play moot. Hell, even in the eshops, Nintendo acted extremely Jewish for games that are now a decade or older. Plus it's more convenient when you use an emulator with things like the ability to use different controllers.

The problem here, the actual problem is that people need money to sustain whatever endeavor they are trying to do, no matter how bad or good they are at it.
There were and still are several options on the table as to how someone hosting their own site to publish whatever content they want can have it funded, just like there are several ways by which a game company can have it's online service working in a sustainable way.
In the end, ads are not a very good choice at all, much like Nintendo's deal is a very rotten one at this point. But it's the best they can come up with because other alternatives are clearly not resonating very well with the public and that's why you have shit like Wikipedia e-begging for cash.

The Switch is a lot more like an overclocked tablet than an actual living room console. They seem to prefer a more casual audience and it's telling considering how they expect voice chat to work with a cellphone.
Nintendo simply isn't making a console for you to play alone in your living room anymore (which kinda sucks but kinda doesn't) and they have been going this way for a while now, if you take a closer look at the 3DS.

It's smart. Lots of people mocked the Wii especially for being lackluster in processing power compared to the other consoles in that generation, but it focused more on it's gimmick without competition for a long while while the Playstation and XBox were direcly competing over who can draw the most triangles (and losing to the PC anyway).
It's a bit the same now, they are trying a different market approach for a different audience and letting the other consoles die out in their niche.

The idea is that I'm wholly against it as a point of principle. This fed line about how it'll pay for better servers or a better online service is first of all complete speculation, but where that argument has been used for Xbox and Playstation we don't see that supposed "quality" that you get for paying a second time to play online. Thus I cant' see any reason to justify spending even one cent a year on such a thing.

They're making a switch from p2p to actual servers. Servers cost money to run, and they're not even asking that much. Nothing at all would be better obviously, but I understand the reasoning. And again, as I said to the other post, we have no actual evidence yet to how good or bad it will be. We probably wont until Splatoon 2 comes out, since I'm pretty sure Deluxe still runs on the p2p system.
