Anyone here try VR before...

Anyone here try VR before? I never have but I am in love with the idea of playing Morrowind and Half-life 1 again but in virtual reality.
Pic related is around $300 now and I was wondering if it is worth it.

There are no good games for VR. And never will be. Third person games are superior to first person ones, and non-action games are superior to actions in the first place.

VR is a waste of money.

I want a VR where I can fuck realistic little Japanese boys, honestly. Maybe a dragon, a robot, even me! VR has so much potential to take you to your craziest sex fantasies. I just want the future to come already.

I don't want to play gimmick waggling games, I want to replay old classic that have VR support.

I just want a waifu sim in VR

Can't you technically make any game that uses 3D compatible with VR?

I got one of them things they got at walmart for like 12 bucks for my phone and managed to get it to work with my computer, a bit warpy, but it was kind of neat.
I'd imagine a proper Headset might look better.

Why are you playing videogames user if you want walking simulators?

along with your wish you shall get sjw lobbying for rights of virtual boys and girls, womyn and man too

they are real people too shitlord

...

This. You will be able to fuck all of the men and boys you want. Just not any girls.

virtual mens rights, not shitlord misogynists

Oh and I think it might be important to mention
I was playing Kirby Air Ride with it.

Is that with the magic of VorpX?

Half Life 2 VR soon, faggot.

I've been using my vive with dolphin vr, playing wii games. It's pretty amazing.

I got to try it in school once a few years ago. It was just a demo thing, riding around in a roller coaster.
It was cool, but I imagine it'd lose its appeal extremely quickly. It'd be annoying to try and play games with.

...

Elite Dangerous is really the only game that is worth the VR but then ED isn't exactly for those who want fun. If you like full blown autism space simulation with a little fun then the game might be for you and with VR the game is pretty fucking amazing with the visuals and all, but I wouldn't spend 300 dollars for just one game that I may or may not like.

I bought an Oculus with my income tax return after reading about how much work the OSVR was to get setup. For a little extra dosh, the Rift was supposed to work flawlessly. I spent like an hour getting it set up, software and hardware. The result was fantastically lackluster for an hour of my time and $550 wasted. But of course, it should get better once I start playing muh games with it! Except that never happened. I loaded up HL2: Lost Coast as a test to see how amazeballs VR would be. I loaded up the game and was forced to use a controller instead of my keyboard and mouse. Needless to say, less-than-impressive optics (VR still has tons of screendoor), shitty user interface, non-keyboard and mouse friendly, and way too fucking overpriced. It was boxed up that night and returned a day later. I thought just like you did, that I would set this shit up and it would be amazing; walking around Morrowind and being totally engulfed in a game. Even if I could have loaded it up, let me tell you - that level of immersion is not going to happen with any modern VR tech right now. Sorry to burst your bubble, OP.

Simple VR as I'd call it, where it's just an HMD with head rotation tracking, can be relatively easily applied to standard non VR games. You can use programs like ReShade, vireio, etc. to inject stereoscopic VR rendering for select games. It's pretty cool, a step up from a flat screen.

"Complex VR" where head position tracking and motion controllers are used is a LOT more immersive and really puts Simple VR to shame. It is a whole other ball game; crouching down to look at a detail on the ground, leaning around a corner, physically interacting with the game world with the controllers. It is a HUGE step up that really blows you away the first time you try it. When you take the HMD off afterwards you completely forget you were even in a room in your house. The thing is it's relatively easy to inject stereoscopic VR rendering and rotational tracking applied to what's normally mouse movement for Simple VR, but it would take a lot of effort to allow positional head tracking, and use of motion controllers would require rewriting large swathes of the game code. And there's the thing- developers want to make games that can be played by the most people to make more sales. So it's more profitable to make a game with Simple VR that can also be played on a normal monitor, but the problem is they're not making use of what really makes VR shine. So it's just a "Oh that's neat." game rather than a "Holy shit I feel like I'm actually in VR". That's why games that use Complex VR are incredibly simple low budget tech demos; because they don't expect a lot of people to buy it because Complex VR requires even more expensive hardware. They need to make an affordable standard for Complex VR Hardware, otherwise VR will continue to wallow in mediocrity of games only using Simple VR features.

But it's still great for porn, right?

I hear the shit graphics become unbearable when the screen is that close to your face.

I tried a number of VR games and even the ones with simplistic graphics were not jarring at all like some people claim. The only thing that really matters is decent resolution to prevent the screen door effect and a bare minimum of 60fps to stop motion sickness from occurring.

Just watch stereoscopic POV snuff films.

I have a few hours on a mates HTC Vive, it's glorious but the low res is stopping me from buying one for now.

Nope, I highly recommend trying before buying and once you try it you will see why that is going to suck.

No matter what controls are used walking around in VR while sitting or standing still IRL just sucks and breaks any sense of immersion that comes from the VR. VR is best suited for cockpit simulators where you are seated in a car or plane so don't need to walk around the game environment.

inb4 heaps of anons that have never used it rant about how shit it is

Prepare to be disappointed because unless the game is specifically designed with VR in mind its going to be vomit city.

If I thought that would have been a redeeming quality, I might have kept it. Too low of a FOV and screen door ruined the experience for me.

the moment you start "walking" in a VR game, you just want to take it off. Playing a full game would be torture.

I won an Oculus Rift as an indie award and I can say with 100% certainty that everyone who thinks it's a passing fad hasn't tried it yet or they aren't right in the head. I know it's tempting to dismiss everything as a gimmick and a passing fad, much like motion controls, but this is different. I am not saying it's the be-all and end-all for gaming, it's not. You can't do every single game genre in it, but it does translate well for third person action games (See Lucky's Tale). I haven't had more fun with a video game in years than I had with Robo Recall - pure, visceral fun.

However, had I not won it, I wouldn't have bought it. It's still overpriced, 99% of the software are quick cash-grabs and the setup is inconvenient. Wait for the inevitable Gen 2.0 when things become more streamlined. Right now you need 5 fucking USB 3.0 ports and an USB extender to hook up the full Oculus setup. The VIVE has a separate box into which you plug all the cables, better motion trackers but it's also damn expensive, and the Oculus Touch controllers are simply miles ahead of HTCs.

I don't get people who say standing still while walking in VR kills the immersion. How do you get immersed in normal games? All you're really doing is holding W and moving a mouse around. If you lament over what things aren't of course you won't be able to appreciate them for what they are. VR itself is incredible, the library is the only thing lacking.

Don't you mean like two or three years ago?

I have a vive and I use it regularly. This statement is false.
Cockpit sims that don't use the motion controls don't use VR in a meaningful way are nothing but a fancy way to look around in the game.

VR is the best when you do use your body and the motion controls, but it takes some time to get used to it. Most people who try locomotion for the first time get motion sick.

Nowadays we have crazy shit like double-jump, sliding, wall-running ninja games like Sairento VR that actually use VR in a meaningful way.
Multiplayer games are also extremely fun in VR, having to hit the ground with your squadmates in Onward is pretty good.

So is being able to rip robots apart with your bare hands in Robo Recall, picking up flying bullets and throwing robots into each other is also really fun.

Cockpit games for VR are nothing but a fancy way to look at shit, it is extremely underwhelming and gets boring really fast

Basically everything said.

I tried it and it's good, but isn't that good enough for the price they are asking. There could be better VR games right now, but devs are just clueless morons who don't think a lot, I see a lot of potential with god games yet I've only seen one which was lackluster.

However there's one thing I'll add, this type of VR where you only have two stick controllers is not sustainable because they HAVE to solve walking in VR. And there's only two ways to solve it, the neural way which I don't know how far off we are from, or pic related way which might be more expensive, but more doable to make. I don't think VR while sitting down has much of a future until we get neural input devices.

inb4 pixel vr

I used a wheel and flight stick so can't see how waggle sticks are going to improve on that.

Room sized VR like Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades work great and the motion controls work better than I ever expected.
That said I can't see spending 100+ hours in any of these game so see the main application being cockpit sims.

Fuck off Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg, that won't work

Cheer up user, we love you, it'll be ok.

...

...

I'll give you another (1) if you give us a (6000000). The argument is "VR is neat, but shitheads keep shoveling shitware out for it, and the hardware is overly-expensive in terms of financial and system resources. Yeah, that's some shilling, alright.

You can get a feel for VR if you have a phone that doesn't overheat when playing fucking Youtube videos, and a $12 plastic visor rig that you pop your phone into. Just watch some anaglyphic 3D gameplay footage. Some of the effect is lost, as it's not your movements in the video, but eh. Neat, but not for every game. Would have been great in the heyday of Battlefield.

...

So you're either a Apple retard, a non-smartphone hipster or a shitposter.

He could use a windows phone

Been using an old Sony Ericsson phone for more than a decade user. Why fix something that's not broken. Why would I need an android? So that Google spies on me?

Don't be ridiculous user, Windows phones are a myth.

Why? Its the same game but it looks like you're playing it via fished eyed lenses

VR could be the best thing ever but as long as there are no good games for it,bit can rot in hell. That's he problem with hardware gimmicks. Does anyone care about Kinect? No. PS Move? No. Wagglan? Only because Nintendo forced devs to use in their games.

I did, and it's going to crash hard unless they actually put some money and quality into it. I stuck my phone into one of those cheaper VR adapters (Like first embed), and even it had a higher screen resolution and crisper display than the VR headsets I've tried.

As far as games…why doesn't someone take something like the 5th/6th gen survival horror titles (Pre-RE4), where you have the PC controlled via "tank" controls, but the headset controls the movement of character's head?

Because immersion silly user.

that sounds dope af actually

additionally, with the right stick freed up by the headset, you could have some sort of first-person melee or shooter game have right stick control the weapon independently of viewpoint: it would be like a light-gun at an arcade

Why would you want to play a game full of text like Morrowind in VR?

I want summerfags to leave

Get back to the arcade grandpa.

At least wait until someone makes the first 3D display that isn't bad.

No, that was the shitty occulus version that was basically "sit down and use keyboard and mouse." There is now one a mod with full VIVE support coming out, and it will be portable to other source engine games….

Like Gmod, portal, whatever else. It's on steamgreenlight right now.

VR is a fast way to commit your soul to Moloch, goiym.

It sounds like Luddite bullshit but I honestly think VR can and will have a significant impact on the minds of people who use it. I know I've experienced IRL effects after playing certain games long enough, and I bet the effect would be far more pronounced with immersive VR. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I don't think most games will be conducive to a positive mental state.

You can be sure it does, it's fairly obvious that something meant to fuck with your mind fucks with your mind.
I have done nothing but play video games for the past 20 years and even without VR I have trouble understanding reality because I've been immersed on false worlds for too long.

I tried the Vive at a Microsoft store at some mall in Atlanta when I was visiting family. It has as-of-yet unrealized potential.

I think games like rail shooters might actually work best with VR as long as they don't do that disorienting automatic movement after each wave.

That's not even the right way to do VR.
That's a shitty video with the game just stretched over the goggles without any head-tracking.

Forcing camera movements into the player on VR is the same thing as not using right click for aiming down sights like some early 3d MMS-style shooters did.
The entire idea is retarded and only a thing because the people behind it are corporate suits who figured innovation is the right thing to make money at the moment, and being an outsider to the medium they work in they couldn't realize such an obvious mistake.

Speaking of corporate suits and innovation, VR will only really take off once people other than kickstarter scammers or businessmen start working on it.

Arcade games are more fun than any VR game out there, kiddo

Thank fucking god someone with a right sense

OH WOW I CAN PLAY MORROWIND BUT EVERYTHING LOOKS SLIGHTY FISH EYED THAT IT MAKES MY HEAD HURT

Potential to steal money from you goys

VR will die off at the end of 2010's. It's a shitty gimmick that always tried to come up but always failed. From the 3D movies in the 50s till this VR meme it always failed. I'm not paying 2 1080s and some 750$ jewish contraption so that 2 years later everyone says "Oh it was just a fad, back to making shitty video games"

How is this thread still going? Has summer started early? Next thing you are going to tell me that consoles are better than PC's

Reality is just one big game. The only problem is that the only way to "win" is to figure out the rules that are scattered far and wide (Embedded PDF should help with the beginning of your journey).

And, if it doesn't die? VR has always been a thing for as far back as cyber-fiction has existed. It hasn't died out in use since then, and it probably never will as long as we don't have holodeck tech, and writers keep on using it as a story element (Last four embed related). Although, we may see VR "die out" has the headset design they're currently going for, and instead replace it with a neural interface idea (Similar what just about ever Asian future-based MMO story does, again comic embed related), or go for something in between a less…risky.
>The source comic is called 1/2 Prince.

Ooooh, the typos.

the concept of masculinity itself is the problem and must be extinguished. shitlord.

OP, not even a good idea t bring up here because jealous, 16 year old motherfuckers (most of whom have never tried it) will rip you for no there reason than you have and they don't.

IF you are going to do it, it's summer now, assuming you have some breathing room with food and shelter, get a job and work enough to get the Vive. For me, the google earth app on the Vive os in itself enough reason. You have to be prepared to send time getting used to it, but one toy are, imagine the ability to essentially travel ANYWHERE in the first person. As time goes on sure they will add smile, tactical, maybe even gustaotory.

There are some really cool games, though I simply haven't had time yet. I've played previews were you use the two…handle thing to pump up a red balloon and do all sorts of little exercises that really do trick your drain into thinking you're in another definition.

And there's no end to the shit that came be done as far as games. I picked Vive more than anything due my visceral hatred for anything goybook and with Zuckerberg's kike name attached.

Oh , I hope there are no fucking idiots on here who bought "snapchat" chance for "pride of purchase." Those dumb motherfucker's REALL got taken in and "Snapchat" stock going to shit in..I forgot if it's july or august when more has to be sold to the public, I've been watching, and I think we're going to see the start of the bursting the US the bubble 2.0.

Look at Snapchat applying the buffet formula of "value investing." If someone were to rip it apart and imagine what it would sell for art a fire sale, what is it worth? What's the inherent value? Dumb fucking teenage girls taking photos and then putting stupid fucking animal noses?

Fucking snapchat is going to CRASH. If anything saves US tech stocks, going to be apple's new phone going far better than anticipations have it. But Snapchat is just fucking trash. If you have it now and somehow get rid, do it.

Sage myself for getting OT. But, yeah, if you are the type who LIKES to fuck around with thinks, fuck with files, take things apart and see how they work and push the limits, you will love VR, just…almost like 3D print, although I'd say VR is more exciting. IF you are type who…for example, relies heavily and only on Apple and just likes shit done for them and trusts the motherfuckers (which is pretty amazing, given the NEWEST CIA leak. Fucking 1984esque animals. Entire CIA and NSA should be disbanded.

Personally, I don't have much use for VR, so I just run stuff through my phone and a cheap Google Cardboard based headset. Works well enough for something I'm not willing to sink hundreds of dollars into. Plus you can run PC shit and stream it to your phone to use VR too, so that's a plus.

Basically I'm saying don't buy a headset, just get a new-ish phone and use that. Much more useful investment, too.
