It's a great single player game if you enjoy crafting and professions. It's the best tradeskill game this decade by far. I spent 9 months on it back at launch and there is a shit ton of content added since then. I still check in every few weeks.
Lol, that is the worst part of the game by far. You do nothing but grind to upgrade high end game stuff. You literally smash your items together to upgrade them and risk losing them both with rng. lol I can't believe people even do that shit in this game. So stupid.

TL;DR This game has excellent crafting and professions, if that is what you are into.
Gearing up and pvp are the worst parts of this game.

Building a boat to go sailing to islands and fishing and taming horses and farming sunflowers and milking cows and picking flowers and mining out in the woods and lumberjacking and managing your worker empire and all that shit is comfy as fuck. I never left the Vanilla continent and had a blast playing BDO. So many things to level up that aren't "muh damage and armor". I've barely killed anything in this game.

Oh, you might be thinking of investing Contribution Points in nodes. Yes you can visit towns/farms/NPCs who are Node Managers and then you invest points into that node and invest in the resources that node has to be able to send workers there to farm stuff for you.

Super simple beginning of the game: You want to invest in one of the farms that has corn/potatoes/wheat/barley/some kind of grain and invest in the node for the resource and then buy a slave to send to that node and gather potatoes/whatever for you. You use those potatoes to craft beer to feed your slaves. Then that snowballs into an empire of like 100 slaves that survive on beer and gather for you. You probably have to farm a few potatoes yourself with a hoe to get a small stack of beer to start. To have more than one slave in a city, you need to buy lodging for your slaves. Now we are getting into the whole buying buildings mechanic and you can research that later.

You get Contribution Points from playing the game and invest them to buy buildings/nodes/certain items and you can take them back. You move them around depending on what you want to do. Like you invest them into a shipyard to build a boat or two, then move those points to a workshop instead to build a wagon.

Since there's not a lot of new stuff coming out that's good, it's the perfect time to catch out on games you missed when you were younger, or ones that were before your time. It's also really fun to get out to real, physical places and browse an actual, tangible selection of games and pick and choose. I've found a few hidden gems just by reading the box art and taking a chance on said game. Finding good deals and trying to find flee markets/shops run by actual people is a great joy, especially when you find a good game on the cheap or start chatting up the customers/owner about vidyas and your thoughts and experiences. Spending actual cash on these things also tends to ensure that you really will PLAY them- as opposed to downloading an emulator and iso/rom pack.

Also, nothing beats the joy of finding a used VMU/Memory card and digging around through someone elses save data or replays from long ago

I only started playing recently but it's ok. it's only $10 to start playing I like that there is a cost to entry so you don't end up with a million [BR] kids shitting up the place. they just added an 8K screenshot feature which is pretty neat. I don't know about the P2W part, haven't run into that but I am not at the lvl I can PVP yet so maybe that is what he means, however the energy system thing is totally false, there is an energy system but it doesn't limit hardly anything you can still quest grind and craft to your hearts content every day all day. the only thing the energy system limits are special actions like bargaining when trading (you can still trade for normal price) and shit like communing with your horse for a free stamina restore or speed buff
