Now that Yooka Laylee has been generally considered a disappointment, are 3D platformers back to being dead?

Now that Yooka Laylee has been generally considered a disappointment, are 3D platformers back to being dead?

There's a bunch of games that have been in the works for the past decade that just can't seem to decide on coming out, at this point I'm really doubting they ever will.

Super Mario Odyssey

Besides Mario.

Of course Mario doesn't fucking count

>somehow one disappointing game means it's genre is dead now
OP, please.

...

I'm looking through upcoming 3D platformers and literally all of them look like shit

The genre has been dead since before the mid 2000 you dumb cunt

I don't think you know what dead means since you keep using it to describe genres which have been and continue to be produced.

Listen asshole I like Mario and 3D platformers but Mario is an outlier and it existing doesn't make the genera alive again.

What genres?
3D platformers? What the fuck are you talking about

Did people actually think this game was going to be good with tumblr bat and Kirkhope being a gigantic faggot?

See, I haven't paid attention to this game during it's development or release at all and yet I've seen a bunch of people vehemently defend it. Are these people just zealous retards? What's disappointing about it?

Level design was rushed out the door, doesn't have polish on most things that aren't character movement.

In all fairness it's rather more difficult to make Microchiroptera noses look cute.

well there's this

store.steampowered.com/app/452540/SkylarPlux_Adventure_On_Clover_Island/?snr=1_5_9300

There's A Hat in Time, if it ever manages to come out.

Which is why games like Gravity Rush or Mario get made right?

I was excited for Yooka, but then didn't bother with it after the fat bearded faggot stuff came to light.

Either way, according to Holla Forums what makes a good 3D platformer? Genuine curiosity here.
Is it collecting shit?
Jumping/jumping puzzles?
Lightheartedness?

ew

Wow man, two whole games, one which is the grand dad of 3D platformers and sells on his name only, released in the past 15 years.
That must mean the genre is alive and well. Look at how prolific people have been into making 3D platformers.

Holla Forums isn't one person
It all comes down to personal preference

Is nintendo the only one having good 3D platformers on their consoles. Can't remember when I played a good on the PC.

Good to know you can't count

????????????

should I even bother?

I dunno user you're getting at critical levels of not-argument here
Feel free to actually explain yourself, people can't read your mind.

Collecting shit shouldn't be the core of a platformer. The shit you collect should be an incentive to make it through various well designed challenges, usually with an emphasis on jumping, but you can mix it up and throw in a combat challenge or a puzzle every now and again.

How the fuck is that a platformer?

Its not
I'm sure the Bayonetta port helped it not sell well though.

Personally it's challenge, completion, traversal and world. In that line of thinking look at Spyro and Ratchet and Clank.
All the worlds are beautiful and interesting to look at, as well as be in.
Spyro has a fair amount of challenge with really good gliding challenges in the first, as well as various interesting "puzzles" and side things to do. And 100%'ing every game of the trilogy is a blast, from the journey of doing it to the reward you get for it.

Ratchet and Clank is just amazing. I wish there were more games like it in the industry. The world is great. The humor is great. The gameplay is great. The side stuff is great. The gadgets and weapons are great. The level designs are great. The cut content museum is great. 100%ing the game is great. Everything about the PS2 trilogy makes me fond of having vidya as my hobby.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that in my opinion what makes 3D platformers is the sum of its parts. What's the point of having great traversal mechanics if the game is too easy to actually require it?(See Warframe for this, although I'm not sure WF qualifies as great) What's the point of collecting all of this shit if you don't get anything for it and it's just lying there or it's already marked on the map and you just need to waste a few minutes getting your ass there? Why do I care about these collectibles and these people if they're so bland and uninteresting? etc.

My dream game would be a 3D platformer with parkour or a grappling hook as the main movement mechanics.

Do you see how this is going to go

Aren't there a ton of banjo-kazooi indie games like yookal-laylee being made?

There's also snake pass.

They're claiming very few 3D platformers are made nowadays. You're claiming that's not true, yet can only offer two examples, giving up when asked for more. You clearly shouldn't bother as you're genuinely fucking retarded and incapable of making a logical argument

How could I forger A&CP! I must be too sleepy.
I'm not even really sure how to classify what genera Snake Pass is. It's a 3D platformer but without jumpingand a colectathon but with puzzle elements (both logical and physics). Sort of a spiritual successor to SRnR.
But it does exist and seems rather comfy too.

...

There are actually a bunch of BK ripoffs in the work, but most of them have had no updates since forever or just look like trash and still aren't released

Mario alone has received more than 2 3D games in the last 5 years
I listed two franchise which got recent installments.
Might want to look up what dead means before defending your retarded brethren.

It's not a platformer for the majority of the game, but it has quite a bit of platforming in it

Holy fuck you have to be mentally challenged.

Run me through your mental gymnastics here.

Mario is a series.
Plus I wouldn't exactly call 3D World and 3D Land shining examples of 3D platforming. And most of the other Mario games are 3D models on a 2D plane and not really what we're talking about here.

A genre is dead if the only game that you can put out as an example is the game that literally started the genre, features THE most recognizable character in the whole industry and is developped by a company with virtually infinite budget.

One series being alive hardly makes the whole genre alive.

what's the matter Holla Forums, afraid of the best 3D platformer in years?

As an expert at shitposting, let me interpret:

Mario is an IP, the different series are eg "3D" or the "New" line of games

that looks like a ghibli movie

it's better

...

...

your wife's son is calling for (you).

Gee, it's almost as if we've had over 15 years to improve on the original concepts introduced in early 3D platformers, ti the point that the genre has diffused into mist major modern releases.

Don't get me wrong, I think there's still a place for a more pure 3D platformer these days, but it cannot be built on nostalgia.

Nostalgia is not a dirty word.

Unity wasn't really the problem here, the game just lacked a lot of polish.

Unity is always the problem

t. someone that has never used an engine or programmed

Oh yea you're going with the "its the problem of the devs!" even though every single unity game has shit performance and tons of other issues right?

unity is the problem because it attracts lazy people.

not every unity game does have those issues. japanese ones run perfectly for example, western devs are just incompetent shits

Not if the devs are good, here's a few examples of well developed games that have no performance problems and look nothing like other titles made with unity

Now this I can agree with

Good 3D platformers sure, but Mario as an IP gets boring as fuck. It's always the same wahoo weeha sounds, the staple jump, coin and powerup mechanics. Galaxy was fresh to an extend in mechanics but the core setting always remains the same.

galaxy degraded the mechanics significantly.

That's because there was no need for all the stuff mario could do in the hubworld games
That doesn't make it objectively worse

it makes it simpler and less interesting when the problems the platforming present you are solved in one or two ways as opposed to 6 or 8 ways.

But that is fixed when the levels offer you a bigger variety of things to go up against and different challenges to beat
So the movement itself doesn't really matter.

Now if Galaxy had Sunshine's levels and the same movement, then yeah, it would be objectively worse.

it's a matter of balance when you have 6 games in the course of 8 years that have very similar structure, mechanics, and level design whereas the last one in a unique and far more satisfying to engage with style is 15 years old, and the last one before that, 20 years old. See the problem yet?

Kind of a bad argument when something like Crash Bandicoot or Spyro also only posed 1 or 2 ways to solve something. Although I agree that galaxy had a lot of streamlining it in, but that's just "levels" being levels.

crash and spyro are undeniably less interesting than mario 64. I don't see your point.

What will it take to kill the Kickstarter meme?

I don't see your point either with you finding them less interesting.

hard not to when you can only solve every problem 1 or 2 ways in rehashed level design scenarios that have been used since the very first mario bros game.

?

1. Galaxy
2. Galaxy 2
3. 3d World

Not to mention, that's a very subjective opinion. A lot of people prefer galaxy over sunshine, some prefer sunshine over 64, etc, etc.
All of them are satisfying to engage in their own way, that's a very close minded opinion to with.

Is there any hope for Crash?

you didn't play 3D land? The NSMB games also incorporate a similar approach, but 6 was hyperbole.

was that how the bouncy boxes were supposed to look?

Finally got around to playing these and my initial reaction is
KAT A FUCKING CUTE!
CUTE!

New Super mario is hardly a 3D platformer or comparable to the mainline games.
Still, very subjective opinion.

nah, they both take a similar approach in level design, one just makes use of 3D space. They also have similar mechanics. They aren't directly comparable but there's some noteworthy similarities that make the games play fairly like one another.

Man, go play NSMB and then 3D World.
The level in NSMB is by the book as it can possibly get, exclusively shit that has already been seen a thousand times.

The sidescroller games are REALLY bad on pretty much every single aspect, especially level design.

Plus there's the branding issue. If you pay or the license you can remove the Unity branding but not the free version. Which results in the engine becoming known for it's worst examples.

You don't?

I don't

yooka-laylee is a disappointment for three big reasons:
-the price is too high for what you get
-the camera fucking sucked on release and while they said they've fixed it, how many players either quit or refunded because of how bad it was
-the jontron debacle

if they had spent maybe another two weeks working on the camera and hadn't pulled their virtue signaling garbage i think we'd all be enjoying it, but no. they had to go and shit the bed in the home stretch

Better question?
Are 3D platformers that replaced trinket collecting with Claiming territory on a cityscape hubworld dead yet?
Cause holy hell, I got sick of those a long time ago.

Wierdo

Are you talking about De Blob, or the Ubisoft style open world game?

Mario Odyssey will be amazing. I normally don't say this but I know it will.

It's because they don't even try. They literally train the new recruits by assigning them to NSMB. It's disgusting really. 2D Mario should recieve the same care as Tropical Freeze.

I mean it's a mario game it's not like they can fuck it up

no, they're afraid of getting eastern cancer from a shitty game that the only prominant feature involves thic asses on your screen, wow look at THAT GAMEPLAY! i'm sure i'll have fun paying 60 dollars on this proxy PORN, I MEAN GAME!

that being said, anime is not an artform and anyone that tries to push this shitty game is obviously a dlsite shill.

I hear grow home is good.

I've never seen a goon this angry, hopefully this gets just another person to try the gravity rush games and enjoy the return of truly great 3D platforming.

Someone's a misery guts today.

Why don't we get mario clones any more like how we get waves of COD clones? Mario still sells well after all.

Have a look through this list
gamingreinvented.com/nintendoarticles/lets-look-at-indie-3d-platformers/

People just have absolutely no idea how to make a good platformer, despite the design having been perfected 20 years ago.

not an artform, don't care.

...

If I didn't know any better, I'd think someone was trying to sell me something… like a Switch…

But nah, that shit doesn't happen on here. Nintendo reps never shill their consoles on imageboards.

what

this is why the east suck miserably at making art, they're lazy and never learn to keep the eyes beneath the hair.

we all saw your tantrum, it was anything but casual

The latter.

yeah you're right, you seem to know a lot about casuals, no wonder you have shit taste in videogames, they're for Cancerous Casualfags such as yourself amirite m8.

Yooka laylee isn't a "platformer"
It's a bootleg.

Haha. Holy shit. This is a scam, for sure.

Ok, but why don't studios make Mario clones?

I don't even own a switch.

no, it's a forced game, it tries too hard to be a game from the past by having a cheap shitty story that's uninteresting and boring, it's just there to support the idea that platformers is dead and that they will revitalize it.

I just want a non-forced game, something that doesn't get hyped or announced by fags that its going to "save" a genre, I just want to be caught by surprise, I think what killed this game was the hype and advertisement as well as the johntron drama, also why the fuck am I trying to save books and shitty manuscripts from cages? why can't it be something else?

easier to make banjo kazooie clones

Because they literally don't seem to have the ability or the balls to take the concept and make it better

yooka is shit, here is something still bad but less shitty.

atleast it's not forced.

Yeah, it's a bootleg
It's a piece of shit pretending to be a good game.

There's a ton besides that one to. Someone even went as far to make a top 5 of the upcoming platformers that have potential. I don't remember the video though.

...

Didn't it get a steam one?

I think so yes.

Really ? I think that Galaxy, especially 2 introduced a lot of new game mechanics. The new controls, power ups, ghost stars, hidden levels, enemies etc.

Sticking so closely to Banjo seems like it was a mistake. Banjo should have just been the jumping off point. Like how Shovel Knight took from lots of NES platformers, but it wasn't just trying to make Megaman again, or trying to make Castlevania again. It had it's own identity. So far, I approve of what I'm seeing from A Hat in Time. I hope they don't fuck it up.

...

They just released a shiny ass HD port.

it's just an HD version of the same game but with an overhaul on texture/graphics

honestly a modder can do this shit.

Just wait for Anton & Coolpecker

Woah, what a salty cunt

So is Ty actually good? I remember it having a reputation of being one of the weaker platformers of it's day.

Never forget

You'll never got those 10 bux back.

I KNEW I was forgetting something

Is Snake Pass good or what?

two years
T W O YEARS AND STILL NOT EVEN A FINISHED LEVEL

Shit the boxes actually had visible apples this whole time.

...

It's fun but short

indie gaming is harder than it looks bro
specially when they can't do it fulltime

The lizard is a dude? what the fuck man they dropped the ball on their marketing here

Hows that?

did you "play" this thing?
the very moment you started to hunger I knew you'd eat one of the fucking nomes at the end
It's the usual 2deep4u, but it looked pretty nice I'll give it that.

I vaguely followed this game based on shit I picked up passively and I had no idea. The name is feminine, the chameleon has supple hips as you can see .
They should have made their characters clearer. It sounds like a joke but a silly mustache would have helped.

That's fanart though.

I just discovered this a few days ago, and it looks right up my alley, but what do you think the odds are that the devs aren't SJW? I don't trust any indies anymore. Do we have any evidence either way? I don't want to give them my money if they're just gonna funnel it directly to some literally who, but otherwise, I definitely want to support more Ratchet & Clank ripoffs.

the title alone tipped me off. only talentless faggots like that instrument.

It's not easy to develop a game with only 12 persons and no money

Good luck with that divorce settlement. Don't let LeShawn mug you on your way out the door.

Crash has better level design than Mario 64. It's not as much about figuring things out as it is about getting good, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's more akin to how 2D Marios work. Mario 64 went in a very different direction rather than trying to translate the 2D games to 3D, and that's fine, but if I just want some tight platforming levels, Crash delivers better. Mario 64 has some levels like this, like the Bowser levels, but most of them are too busy trying to show you open worlds and shit, and don't make the actual platforming you have to do as tightly designed.

Crash 1 is about waiting for platforms
Crash 2 has better level design than 64.

The level design got better in each Crash game, but Crash 2 also got a bit too easy, and Crash 3 had the best platforming levels, but they only made up half the game, and the other half were gimmick levels, which were still fun, but not platforming.

I wouldn't say Crash 1 is about waiting for platforms though. There are some times when it happens, but if you're good, you frequently don't need to wait at all. Though once again, Crash 3 does the best job with this. It's all designed so if you're on track to get the platinum relic, all the patterns line up perfectly, so long as you're going fast as fuck.

Seeing the trailers of the fucking trilogy makes me want to cry. It looks fucking disgusting.

...

I don't know why I laughed so hard at this comment

lmao

wow you really showed me
I now see the wrongfulness of my ways

...

God damn, I love that facial expression.
God DAMN, I LOVE that facial expression.

This is a copypasta, there are retards that still take it as being sincere though.

I'm pretty pessimistic about SMO. Wii U library kind of took a nose dive in quality after Iwata and his influence passed. Instead of games like Frozen Dong, 3D World, etc we got Color Splash.

The whole concept of going into a world that's just like ours reminds me way too much of Sonic 06.

Yooka Laylee seems like it was really close to being great but they didn't get there in the final stretch. After playing Snake Way, I have no idea why they went with Unity over Unreal. Just using Unreal would have made the game way better.

All of these look like vaginas.

Feels fucking good man.
Its been so long.
I cant afford it or else I would purchase but I wonder if there a pirated download or a torrent up yet. I would like to see how it plays before I buy it again. Now only if we can get a Dr. Muto and Whiplash to go with our Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and Voodoo Vince coming to steam ass shit.

Good to see I'm not the only one waiting on this.

>fucking Voodoo Vince which I've still never played somehow gets a PC release

Oh it gets better user
There's fully complete and ready to go versions of Blinx 1 & 2 for XP and Vista.
Never released
And likely overwritten on an old workstation pc in a microsoft warehouse.

Get out ps4fag, pretending you have games doesn't make it true.

Jesus mang, I remember playing that at the walmart sample station. It seems so damn long ago.

Oh man I loved blinx

Hey user!
guess what game got picked to go on vista to show off before getting "hard work and patching" to work on xp?

On the note of stillborn 3d Platformers anyone else remember Vexx? I got it from Blockbuster ages ago on the good ol PS2, and I can't really remember if I finished it or not, but fromw hat I do recall it was actually pretty OK, you were running around getting photo realistic hearts, it had a day\night cycle that affected enemy behavior and it had one of the edgier protagonists I remember from that era. Still has a good OST though.

Do you have a sauce on that shit or are you just doing this to make me suffer?

Honestly that game always felt kinda tedious to me, I remember hating the camera so much that the game was essentially unplayable because of it. It wasn't that bad but I still want to see it rereleased it sucks to have games become lost to time cause of cancerous console related things, like exclusivity. I always liked the art style and setting and concept, I just wasnt the biggest fan of the execution.

Jesus fucking christ, thats infuriatingly frustrating and yet also soul crushing.
How do you know this? Basically, source or citation?

It seems so damn long ago cause it probably was so damn long ago, Voodoo Vince is like 14 years old, released in 2003. always really liked Voodoo Vince, especially the music, I am glad to see it preserved against time.

Ah man, I remember that game I played the demo, enjoyed it unfortunately I could never track down an actual copy of the game.

Thanks user, I'll try it if possible. And by that I mean if I'm able to pirate it first. :^)

Play it and it'll feel like a refreshment, its better then the shit you have now, I got more engaged in playing TY instead of Yooka, I was bored out of my fucking mind playing Yooka tbh.

those are not vaginas user, they are horse dildos

looks like there is a really low-poly mesh for fruit in those crates.

Just let it all burn

I haven't gotten around to 2 yet, but Gravity Rush 1 was fucking great. The waifufags are annoying as fuck, but the game is still in my top 5 or so of the last decade. I mean it was a shit decade, but still.

Wouldn't really call it a platformer though.

Honestly you're not wrong.

the tendency for videogames is to get worse in the coming years, just fuck my shit up.

what the fuck man.

Vexx was the edgiest character ever made. You could cut an atom with that edge.

I love how the concept art looks like some kid's doodles and that they actually made a game around these without losing much of style. It's still the first game I'd want to play on an Xbox emulator and the reason I still look around secondhand stores for a working console.

yeah the collectibles were beating hearts, too. it was "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" tier.

Chill, It's just the same as it is before

the lizard looks like a girl and the bat looks like a boy

No, it looks like a balding middle-aged dude.

You've been watching to many furry cartoons to somehow see this.

Nice meme talk about his feet now

No.

...

Zineth

Got to the final boss, couldn't beat em. One of my favorite platformers. Tons of variety in the levels and level objectives. Combat was really fun with tons of juggling and grouping of enemies. Loved how each of the objective descriptions were limericks that hinted at what to do.

Next to JSRF, it's one of my favorite XBOX games.

Not as long as Activision owns the IP
and btw this remake looks like shit

...

What the fuck is this shit? I expected something like ARMS + Super Mario Galaxy, not this artsy calarts tier shit

Play it. The gameplay's solid.

Not bad, but not great.
It's solid alright, a solid piece of shit

Nah it's great.

So good, yeah.
Well, it is a POC, so I won't shit on it too much. Music is pretty good.

why'd they changed the question marks border from red to black?

It was changed since the GBA games iirc

Feels like the last third of a dark Studio Ghibli movie where everything took a dark turn at some point.

Concept art and level design indicated you worked at the Maw at some point in the past as did a lot of people before they were turned into food. The hunger is likely a curse the final boss gave you and other workers to keep them in line, but since we don't have the first 2/3s of this story the entire ending loses the depth or comes across as garbage depending on how you look at it.

What's your OS and issue. Works fine on the 3 machines I ran it on without a single crash.

Windows 7 Home. It just crashes randomly.
I see it's built in unity, I'm not gonna bother, honestly. You got the soundtrack? The files were 404'd, this is all I extracted. mega.nz/#F!WBlhyRDK!B14XbqlTVsrW4zdKgR980g
I could tag them myself, but if it's already available, I'd appreciate it.

I used to have it actually before a hard drive fuck up. I'de say try the share thread or the Vola but you'de probably be told to fuck off or something.

Shit nigga at least pirate pro before blaming the game even if unity is a legit reason

How the fuck would pro even help me, HOW!?

It was more a dig at your technical ability son. Follow the dancing balls:
Have Home edition -implies-> Can't pirate Pro edition -implies-> may have something other than the game fucked up in his system -implies-> you kinda bad at computering -implies -> don't blame the admittedly steaming pile that is unity

Snake Pass

When will you retards die off? It's pretty obvious that that's just a theme of ONE level, it's not the game's gimmick. jesus fuck.

I'm not sure why people keep bringing up Sonic 06, when Sonic Adventure did it first and better.

It's made by the same guys who did Bubsy 3D 2 and Sonic Dreams Collection so you know it's good.

...

The lizard was always a dude. How much r63 have you been fapping to?

how silly are we talking?

Lots

I thought the mustache picture was a bra/panty comparison

i like the way you think

Installing is the same, isn't pro bloated?

im still hoping Rayman or Gex get the revive treatment they deserve, more along the lines of how bomberman is now, not shit but not perfect either.

Unless you're talking 3D the Ubisoft gmes have been pretty good. As for Gex I think he needs to beleft in the 90's, I don't think a constant reference spewing character would be any more likeable now.

However I will say the first Gex had some great levels, Toontown was my favorite

How were sales for Yooka-Laylee?

Pretty good, don't expect a sequel though. Unless they wanna try their luck with a SECOND kikestarter

And I die a little more inside once again.

Wew.

Honestly there's worse things out there that have succeeded far more. I can't say I feel upset over this game making some money.

Like I said. It's just an additive thing that makes me more miserable. They definitely didn't deserve that money.
