Hey, now. So I'm seeing a lot of flailing spacker-drama about the localization. When this thing hit the shelves a lot of you goons said it was riddled with le reddit internet meme humour or whatever.

I thought 3 had trash writing, and whilst I liked 4 more, I could only stomach 25 hours or so before it became bland & repetitive. Should I bother with 5, or is it more of the same?

Probably not, it's a lot like 3 and 4 except with more polish.

The writing in p5 is marginally better. I liked it more than 3 and 4. The translation only has some questionable memes/lines in the beginning. At around 20 hours everything was fine for the most part. All the enemies are now demons, and you can negotiate with them. They added 4 new if bless and curse non-instakills count damage types from p1. i forget if psy was in p1 or not. The game flows much better too. Basicallyn if you dont mind the exessive story, and you though p4's combat got too boring, but you liked it, p5 is a reccomend.

The game is written by the writer of P2 and DDS and these people expect it to be the Slice of Life nonsense in P3-onward.

I'm upset. It's got flaws, and the library level is the WORST waste of my time since Futaba's Pyramid level, but the characters are already more interesting than most of the new Persona cast with serious traumas and interesting twists in their backstories. Then comes these people who fawned over Persona 5 and expect this to be the same thing.

Not really. Just use them in your party, talk to them in the hub areas, and follow their personal stories.

The only added bonus is getting to personally, intimately befriend/learn more about your party instead of that coming out only via the plot.

I have a theory that the translation was cucked early on (about the first in game month) before some higher ups caught the fuck ups, fired them, and had to fix it. Thats why some early text boxes have fucked.up grammar, because they had to rush those. I feel they ran out of time, so they kept a few of the less impactful memes in there (like the u jelly part at the beginning of the 1st palace).

What amazed me was how open they were about it in Yakuza 5. If they are so blatant about the every-man's speculation that this goes on, and put that speculation into a major release like that, it can only mean it really does happen. The localization was a pleasant surprise.
I remember Holla Forums was panicking awhile back when the game was delayed, and one of the reasons given was that they were going to "improve" the game's translation. That, combined with screenshots of some suspicious dialogue options, caused people to worry that "localizers" had got involved and started butchering the story.
Luckily, this wasn't the case. It definitely has dubtitles, but generally the worst you'll notice is things like "Wruuuaauughh" being subtitled as "What did you do that for?" or "okaeri" as "hi there!"
And the controversial screencapped dialogue turned out to be perfectly logical in context. Even the one that asked if a character's gender was boy, girl, or car.

I feel like a lot of the translation errors pointed out are stretching in order to make things look worse than they actually are. Which is a weird choice since a lot of the English sounds awkward enough that I think it could be criticized on that aspect alone. I guess most Western anime fans would be used to people not dying when they're killed though.

As such the rebuttal is right about a lot of the criticism being excessive, but also manages to drag up some strained interpretations of its own. I'll cherry pick the second comprehension error because I spent so much time mulling over that one in particular. The original line is the speaker asking someone else if they work there and then suggesting that the establishment must be better off monetarily than the speaker expected, to be able to afford a part time employee. The second character responds saying that is not the case. In the original Japanese it doesn't matter which part the second character is responding to. If he's saying no, I don't work here, then he doesn't work there. If he's saying no, they can't afford a part time employee, then logically he still doesn't work there since they can't afford to hire him. Both interpretations make sense and ultimately mean the same thing. In the English he can only be responding to the second part for it to even be correct at all, never mind make sense, since he doesn't actually work there. I assume anyway he doesn't work there anyway, I don't play this shit. Even if you won't call it wrong, it's still chunky as hell. I'm also not fond of the whole "if it makes sense in the end it's fine" thing, but whatever.

I don't think it would hurt for people to be more critical of the translations they're ultimately forced to use, regardless of the kind of people producing them. Even more so when you're paying for it. Just because a translation is free of memes and hasn't changed all the characters to be cripple genderfluid bedpans doesn't mean it's automatically good, or even as good as it could have been. I am aware that my opinion on anything about this translation is almost totally irrelevant since, as mentioned earlier, I haven't played the game at all in any language. I cannot be as autistic about this as I'd like to. Please understand.

I haven't played the game either so I can't judge the quality of the translation beyond the examples presented. It's possible that it gets better. I'd have to inspect gameplay videos in both Japanese and English to know for sure.

Ultimately, the only way to enjoy the game in the most faithful manner is simply to learn the language it was written in and interpret things yourself. Anything else is a compromise.

P5 on Hard Mercliess is kind of retarded as another poster pointed out; easier against things with weaknesses, much harder if they have none (many bosses don't) from the beginning is better than everything you listed. Typical difficulty spike at the beginning because you can barely heal or regain SP and then it smooths out like DQ8 or whatever other above-avg JRPG you can think of. It's not Nocturne-hard but only Nocturne was Nocturne-hard and that wasn't even the first edition of the game. Also I would hope they're saving that for the actual new console SMT with those delicious new demon models. I've been playing PSP & DS thanks to the emulator. Still a very small library of games.
I just want SMT tier turn based combat systems and Dragon Quest exploration. Never was a huge fan of the "Dating Simulator" but once I get far enough into a persona games story so that it "opens up" I actually enjoy them but the games all start out slow as molasses. Tartarus and the Answer from FES and the dungeon's in P4 are excellent especially if you are using Velvet Room to fuse Personas constantly. Its the shitty nonsensical social link bullshit that drag the game down. Sure a few story lines are ok, but its very little payoff considering how much time you have to invest in these things. If only their was a JRPG with the quality battle system without the other gimmicks. Aside for tactical games (which are a whole different ball game) there are very few turn based RPGs that get the combat as good as SMT.

Tbh most dungeon crawlers are based more on wizardry. Smt is an offshoot of wizardry. I dont think you'll find smt like gameplay outside of smt.

That's what almost every other SMT does, just go play those. The appeal of Persona 3 onwards is that you get to take a break from that when it gets boring and go play a dating sim instead.

P3 didn't have one, P4 didn't have one, P5 doesn't have one, and P6 if ever most likely won't have one either. its one of those games where you should really do everything you can before the ending because playing NG+ really has no point other than doing the things you missed in the first playthrough. you don't get any special rewards for beating NG+ like you would in, say, Nier, or BOFV

what would the special ending be like? the story is pretty much perfectly concluded happily in the current version.

if anything, i wish to know what the fuck was the evil-mona that mona keeps dreaming about. that didn't seem like a memory, it seemed more like a boss that was cut out of the game entirely (both jap and west versions) due to time constraints. Mona's link advances on its own like Igor's, and those nightmares make it feel unfinished.

Nuke is probably the best element. It techs on all physical ailments and does pretty decent damage. Plus the healing, the defence buff, and the aoe phys with chance for dizzy. Mona and makoto are the 2 staple members of my party. i almost always used ryuji and a phys persona, unless the enemy was immune to phys, then i used haru. Yusuke and ann were useless to me

Her element is one of the rarest weaknesses and as magic does pathetic damage in the game without concentrate that's not good, she doesn't have a hail mary crit, and she's as good at healing as mona.

I had makoto, mona, and ryuji out for every boss and i was fine for the most part. Mona for healing, makoto for def buffs + more healing, ryuji for phys attacks, and a really good phys persona. I never used ann past the 2nd dungeon.

I was getting 1 shotted my normal attacks on the regular on merciless. Even on hard the game is brutal. seriously, archangel wiped my party 3 times in the 1st dungeon on normal

Merciless mode has easily survivable hits 100% of the time provided they're tarunda'd and on normal enemies merciless makes the game easier so if you give them a turn period you're either just trying to auto your way through the game or just purposefully using wrong elements, maybe because you have makoto as opposed to literally anyone else.

I mean the random archangels that appear just after that. They do varja blast every turn. I wasnt expecting it and it wiped both ann and mona, then a failed escape and dead. I thought it was a rare random encounter, it isnt. Pretty much the same thing happend. Round 3 i tried killing it, then discovered that dormina works real well. Of course the way my team was set up, i had to wait until mona guards so it doesnt wake up and varja blast anyway. The only way to kill those fucks is with dormina. There is no other fucking way.

but yeah merciless doesn't change damage values period unless they crit you or hit a weakness/tech. It does reduce money/exp by 60% though, so it's more of a meme difficulty than actual difficulty for a majority of the game, and then on bosses it becomes actually a difficulty and not just "one shot all random encounters".

confirmed you either didn't upgrade your armor period or tried a sick new arsene only P5 merciless run. Normal hits I.E not crit/techs are easily survivable provided tarunda is up. I really don't get the P5 is hard meme people are trying to push, it's piss easy in comparison to SMT games exception of 4/apoc. Random encounters are massively trivial (especially on merciless) and bosses pose near 0 threat you can't just sandbag out of provided you actually use the guard command ever.

Yeah, i was retarded then, but aside from that one plat demon thing, i dont think you get eiha for a while, so i would have had to resummon arsene and fuse it up for eiha. I thought it was more fun to just fuse for higher level demons and use what i had in fights. Made it more interesting than always having what i needed at all times.

personally i'd rather get the biggest challenge, and beat it using the tools i am given, instead of artificially crippling myself. game is designed well enough that even with the best possible preparation in merciless, you'll get assfucked a couple of times on the way to the boss, AND on the boss too. i got pretty familiar with the game over screen.

I felt merciless was too tedious, atleast in the 1st palace. I had to grind a bit to not have everyone die in one hit to beriths. There might have been a way to get ice before then but im not sure. Even then when i did get a random crit, the all out attack didnt do enough damage. Next playthrough i'll throw on the raidou and p3 costumes and do a merciless run, no buying higher level demons run.

armor helps a lot in the beginning, less later on.

try to manage your grinding SP, if you get into a fight with fucking Berith, escape, and try to get into another fight, the demons reroll themselves. usually when you spend a day going into a palace, you try to do everything as far as the game allows you, well, for kamoshida i spent 2 extra time slots going in just for grinding. its kind of a waste but necessary at the beginning since you have no means to recover your SP. berith is weak to Zio iirc

try to negotiate as much as you can, remember this: the demon you negotiate with counts as "killed", while the others who escape don't. so leave a single demon alive and negotiate with that one to get the full exp + negotiation results.

you know the drink machine that is outside of the Bath in front of leblanc? it sells 2 arginade and 2 water of life per week, each restores 5 SP. its not much, but it might help extend the amount of exp you get in total each day. buy them every week from the moment you step out of the train at the beginning.
