I've seen debate over this with people claiming each soundtrack is superior to the other, what do you think? Don't forget the second game also has two seperate OSTs.
Sega CD. That shit is the original aesthetic and oozes ambience and ocean feel.

Ecco osts are comfy

The cartridge version is unique, haunting, oppressive; the CD is just your typical new age / ambient sound. Not saying it's bad, but it's not the right feel. Cartridge wins, hands pectoral fins down!
Also, this is a really interesting port/hack that I never see mentioned anywhere. People took the PC port of Ecco 1, updated it for modern systems and added a bunch of improved features to it, such as the ability to choose graphics and OST. Worth checking out for anyone interested.
Tubes of Medusa was great, shame the CD didn't have an equivalent track to this.
Vents of Medusa on the Game Gear is another great track from Ecco 2.

Found a pretty good mix of Tube of Medusa the other day.

Why did Ecco use the Time Machine in Ecco 2?

I personally prefer the Sega CD version, but they are very situational. The CD version has this serene effect that I can only place though foggy memories of the kind of shit they played during nap time when I was in preschool. I'm not even spiritual by any stretch of the imagination, but that entire soundtrack hits my zen centers like nothing else. However, the Genesis soundtrack has its uses. If you play it on a speaker while urban exploring you WILL see some shit. Even if the place really is empty.
