The whole reason for train simulator exists is for people that like model trains but have no physical room for actual sets.
You need licenses/agreements in order to recreate rail lines, rolling stock and trains in a physically or digitally. The reason why the DLC is like that is because they have to fight over licenses with actual model train companies and their consumers wouldn't fucking care about the game if it didn't have real trains and shit.

That's why despite there being other Train Simulator like games that have shit tons more content, they aren't nearly as popular because they use fictional assets instead or real engines/rolling stock/rail lines.

Guild Wars campaigns were all stand-alone. If you owned one campaign you had it and all of its content. Both Factions and Nightfall introduced new mechanics used only in them. The PvP area was open to all campaigns, and could also be bought separately. Eye of the North was the only expansion pack that required any of the three base games.

The stuff that could be bought from the store was primarily unlocks for PvP. The reason was a simple one - if you bought the $20 PvP-only version, you could never unlock all of the skills and abilities from the base games. The skill unlock packs let you unlock everything upfront instead of having to grind for it. If you just played the game, you could do all of that for free with pretty much no grinding. Hell, if you paid attention to weekends with XP bonuses for Signets and hunted down elite skills, you would never grind except for vanity gear.

There were a few (pretty shitty) bonus items that game with the Game of the Year edition; you could buy that separately if you didn't have the original. And there were costumes added in the end with no mechanical benefits. As a general rule, it was nothing that conferred a mechanical advantage to players.

Now, if you want to say that any game that ever releases paid content after its initial release is charging you a fee, then sure, Guild Wars did. But it was far more affordable than a subscription model, and didn't have any of the bullshit of a F2P model. It was the most consumer-friendly way an MMO could be presented.

in europa universalis IV, you can colonize the new world. these colonies are part of your empire but not directly, meaning that you can't do the same things to/with them as you can to a province you directly control. in the base game, the colony AI is turbofucked and will, no matter what, eventually declare independence and start a war with you, no matter how good you've treated them, what your tariffs and taxation are like, how much religious freedom you let them have, or how mighty you are. this is fixed in a DLC which costs five dollars. let me say that again: a critical AI fix for an extremely glaring problem which effectively bars off a pretty important part of the game (only for the player though, the AI nations do not have this problem) costs five dollars to patch.

Actually, I just managed to get all the Amiibo tunics using a cheat program with my soft-modded Wii U. I purchase a set of clothing at a shop then modify the item ID of the set to one of the ID of the amiibo-exclusive tunics. Now I have them all without needing to use amiibos.

Probably not the worst but i am still blown away that microsoft put ads in their console dash boards and then charge people to play online on top of that.

The best part is that the ads load before the dashboard itself, so that update more than dectupled the time it takes for the console to boot if it's connected to the internet. Console players are truly fucked.

Guys, seriously, CS:GO and Saints Row.

Let me start with cs:go. Valve owns some nice tech. In Source Engine games your mods don't replace shit anymore like they used to, you drop the mod (a vpk file) into your mod folder and in game you can enable or disable them. They did this first in Left 4 Dead 2 but then patched it into cs:s too.

But cs:go does not have this tech. At first I thought they would patch it in after some point, but later when they added their own skins to the game it became clear that they would never allow mods in cs:go.

What they did is they disabled mod so they can sell their own skins. Normally when you install a mod in source engine and join a server that does not want you to have mods your game just loads the default files. You would think it is the same in cs:go, but nope the server will instead just kick you. Valve went total jew in cs:go, they did not only remove skins to later sell them, they also disabled mods.

Saints Row is basically the same, they remove features like clothing layers only to sell you the clothes as dlc. SR2 outfits were only available as dlc in the third one.
