If the DS/Wii servers are anything to go by the Wii U servers will be up for as long as physically possible. Wii/DS servers only went down because Gamespy got bought out (they were providing the hosting) and even then pirate/third-party servers immediately sprung up to replace the online for more popular games.

I'm pretty curious about what's going to happen to the Splatoon community after Splatoon 2 launches. Will Splatoon become the "Melee" of the Splatoon franchise, or will it quickly die out? It all depends on how well the sequel plays competitively. For example, Nintendo appears to be nerfing specials pretty hard. That could make the game more fun and skillful to play (no more panic kraken/bubble), or it could slow down the pace of the game and give competitive players a legitimate reason to stick to the original.

Yeah the Splatoon servers aren't going anywhere for a few years, and even then Splatoon has a dedicated enough following that it will probably get a fan replacement server. There's a matchmaking server, and IIRC there's another server that the game is required to ping at regular intervals during the match, and that's about it. Everything else is handled P2P and won't need to be touched. Very doable so long as Nintendo doesn't release a final patch that intentionally breaks online as a big fuck you to the fans.

I'm more worried about how long Miiverse will stick around. We know the Switch doesn't have Miiverse, it doesn't have an a resistive touch screen with a stylus for drawing anyway, and it looks like Nintendo is trying to move in a more "grown up" normalfag friendly direction (why create our own social network with a kiddie stigma when we can just make it easy to post on Twitter and Faceberg?). Miiverse could get shuttered pretty quickly.

The day when I stop seeing poorly drawn squids in the plaza is going to be profoundly sad. Hell, Splatoon 2's plaza is going to feel pretty lifeless without them as well.

I honestly don't know. They need a Miiverse-like hub to implement Splatoon's plaza, I don't know how they can have anything like it if they're not trying to run a Nintendo social network anymore. The phone app is probably going to be a Discord or LINE clone, focused on chatrooms and organizing matches, not a source of OC they can use.

Almost everyone I added to my friends list from these threads never play the game. Mumble is mostly used to convenience for setting up matches and because the people who go on mumble consistently play the game, but otherwise no one would have a problem with someone just wanting to join.

Mumble just makes things easier, and allows people to communicate without bloating the thread with shit-talking and minor comments.

The testfire was global, which doesn't bode well, but otherwise they haven't said anything. It would be frankly stupid to charge for online and not have servers, but I don't trust Nintendo to not fuck that up.

Splatoon is a very popular game. It would be pretty expensive to host dedicated servers for it, more than the $20-30 a year they're asking for can justify. On the contrary it makes no sense for Nintendo to spend money on that when their customers are ok with P2P which costs them next to nothing. Even if they did, you probably wouldn't like the results: either they undercommit servers and you're waiting for a server to free up all the time, they move to a cloud based solution that can adjust to demand but probably performs worse than P2P, or they overcommit and the price of online goes up.

I hadn't heard about the tickrate, guess that's how they reduced the bandwidth usage. That's worrying, 25hz is already pretty low for a shooter. 12.5hz is MMO-tier.

I wouldn't count on this, because the purpose of the testfire is to stress the servers. It makes no sense to try to reduce load below what it will be in the final game. I guess it's possible that Nintendo plans on doing more testfires with parameters changed before they make a a final decision, but you'd think they'd have announced the next one by now.

And even then you can just factor in the cost of the base game plus the cost of online play so you can actually play what the game primarily focuses on. Either way this isn't how you encourage people to buy your next installment. By porting it to a new console after the last one tanked and then forcing you to pay extra for as long as you wish to play it.

Corporations probably have at the very least a major major role in everything. Squids are always going for the latest trends and actually earn money participating even in something that is as casual and friendly as turf war. Think of all the squids who play in turf war and ranked, if they are earning bits of money even if they lose, someone is getting a hell of a lot more hosting it, getting sponsorship deals from all the clothing and weapon companies, and broadcasting it across a wide spectrum of media (radio, tv, smartshit, etc). The squids grow up seeing how cool all the older squids are playing and winning their matches, their parents probably tell them stories of all their best memories, and if they have siblings, those siblings talk about it at the dinner table almost every night. So when they get to the right age, they show up, everyone tells them how not fresh they are, and how the only way to be fresh is to play more and more and get more expensive and fresh looking clothing. Two beautiful idols are telling them about matches going on all the time and about the big festivals that happen.

Their love of materialism is so prevalent that even the Octarians take note of it in the sunken sea scrolls, talking about how they move from fad to fad and buy more and more to stay fresh. That isn't even getting into the possibility of their own military using it as a sort of training, although judging from the fact that Cuttlefish was the one dealing with the Octarian threat, they probably don't have a standing military these days as that would have probably been the initial response rather than send a kid to get them all back.

That all being said, the main premise of squidkid ink shooting is probably heavily funded and run by corporate sponsors with all their attention being grabbed and pulled at by the multitude of companies that wish to show their products off. I'd say corporate utopia was a solid choice of wording by the user that posted it earlier

My take on the paid online thing is this: it's only going to be like 30 bucks a year and that's less than what I pay for internet and cable each month out of the year. Yeah, I'd prefer free online, just like i'd prefer free everything, but that's a relatively small expense for most stable human beings who can set aside some money out of their income for their video game hobby and already pay upwards to 60 dollars a month on top of their internet service for various other online services from other companies like Hulu and the like. I also am not going to sit here and pretend like I know for certain why Nintendo or any other company charges for this kind of service and doesn't just offer it for free. I generally feel that companies as far as most of their actions go, have a certain logic to what they do, a logic that at least makes sense to them, But the way some dudes on Holla Forums act, Nintendo is passing their sister around the executive table and if you suggest they are blowing things out of proportion or are jumping to conclusions without evidence, you're a shill, which is the equivalent of the whole "anyone who denies the conspiracy is in on the conspiracy" mentality. I just think, as with most topics of discussion on this board, people are making mountains out of molehills. The same goes for the Amiibo thing, there are people on Holla Forums who make it out to be the scummiest thing any company has ever done in the history of video games, but based on the success of the amiibos and the positive reception of the concept by those who otherwise prefer the approach of the amiibos to other toy-to-life deals, it's safe to say that most normal vidya consumers don't share this hatred.

Most people's reaction to paid online is "eh, i'd rather it be free but whatever, 30 bucks a year? no big deal, less than what I pay for my PSN" Most people's reaction to amiibos is either positive or one of sheer ambivalence. Neither is a topic worthy of very much discussion because regardless of whether people are okay with these things, they're just not that important. But Holla Forums at times feels fairly isolated mentally from pretty much the rest of the video game world, which is probably to be expected when its userbase is made up of many people who thought they were too cool or redpilled for 4/v/. A lot of the "Nintendoom" stuff is one example of this disconnection. 5 years from now, Nintendo will release the Switch 2 and there will still be people on forums like this saying "Nintendo's gonne go third party any day now" because of some trivial reason and 5 years after that, Nintendo will make another console and they'll probably be "predicting" the same thing, just as people online were predicting Nintendoom back in the N64 days because the N64 lost to the Playstation. But Nintendo's been in this business for a long time and has survived where so many others have crashed and burned for a reason, and I think the reasons are very simple and one of those reasons is simply that they still make products people want to buy.

You might be selling the inklings a little short. The Turf Wars seem to be more than just a game that is capitalized on by corporations. The casual Turf Wars themselves began at first as a kind of re-enactment of the battle with the Octarians during the Great Turf War which saw the Inklings emerge victorious. Also, the fax machine is practically regarded as divine by many of the inklings, who see it as bringing messages from heaven or something, which would actually make it seem like Turf Wars/Splatfests may have a religious dimension. Originally, Callie & Marie were conceived of as shrine maidens, but this was changed to make them idols, but the developers said that in this context, there wasn't that huge of a difference since much of japanese idol culture owes to some of the traditions of Shintoism and Japanese Buddhism that gradually became more secularized.

I would say that the Turf Wars perhaps began as re-enactments for educational purposes: reminding the Inklings of those who gave their tentacles in the fight against the Octarians. At times, the Inklings applied religious significance to these re-enactments through special Splatfests based on cryptic messages from the heavens. But over time, the Turf Wars just became another sport sponsored by those looking to make money off it, with many younger Inklings probably having no clue about its origins or original context or just no longer really caring, so much so that they don't even remember that the Octarians still exist and probably look on the Inklings re-enactment of the war that saw them forced underground with a measure of horror and contempt. And I could imagine older inklings feeling like the squid kids these days don't appreciate what their generation fought and died for because they know no hardship.

The Octarians don't practice Turf Wars because why would they? The Turf War was a tragedy for their once proud and noble race, who lost their homes in the sun just because some dumb ass forgot to plug something in. The Octarians also don't really understand the Inklings' obsession with fashion, probably because a measure of conformity and suppression of individualism was necessary for their survival in the harsh world underground while the Inkling basically had perpetual energy and all the resources they could ever want.

If anyone's fashion sense is about rebellion, it's the Octarians, ironically, since they're basically the underdog and their fashion sense rejects the more individualistic consumer culture of their inkling relatives. Their simple uniform techno fashion that focuses a bit more on functionality clashes with the Inklings' own, kinda like how all the guys in Fight Club wore black jeans, shirts and leather jackets as a show of nihilistic rebellion.

You guys are taking that comment too literally. I just want to see squids in uniform and imagine them as fascist child soldiers, and also think the thundercunt's analysis of the squids of being on the "wrong side of history" is hilarious and reaffirming.
The octarians are currently the more fascist of the two races, being forced to create an army to defend and retake land from the inklings, but as the scrolls show the inklings became serious soldiers in the war 100 years ago.
It makes you wonder, did the scrolls paint a story of war heroes as propaganda, or do the scrolls depict reality, and the world of Splatoon we see in game is the illusion of propaganda? For instance, the scrolls depicted Octavio as a humanoid, but in the campaign he has been reduced to the form of an octopus. And it seems unlikely that the Inklings and Octarians could have had peace in the past with the majority of the Octarians being sub-humanoids. This could be explained by the waning strength of their race, but it could also be a form of propaganda conducted by the Inklings or those that control them, purposefully depicting them as grotesque monsters so that we won't feel bad about slaughtering them.
The devs intentionally played with this, creating a setting with more possible interpretations than simply "shoot the bad guys" and "you are the demons bad guys." For instance, "inklings are naive and manipulable into committing genocide with promises of fresh hats, and that's just the way it is" is both a plausible interpretation, and a way more dark one than your standard Japanese anime war story "THE ENEMY IS PEOPLE TOO WE HAVE TO SACRIFICE OURSELVES AND SING POP SONGS TO NEGOTIATE A CEASEFIRE." It will be very interesting to see if Splatoon 2 continues this ambiguity under the surface, or if they try to steer the series toward a more conventional narrative.

Well, we're not sure just how violent the Great Turf War actually was. Keep in mind that no inklings die in normal turf war from being splatted, if the Great Turf War was basically the same thing on a larger scale, presumably nobody did actually die simply because inkling and octarian physiology prevents them from dying by any other means besides possibly old age or starvation. The game's tone presents the Great Turf War as though it was a glorified game of king of the hill with some high stakes and Octavio's mad cause "THEM INKLINGS CHEATED! CHEATERS! REEEEEEEE!" Our use of the word "genocide" here is just our own projection as stupid humans with small brain cavities, and we know what happened to humans in the Splatooniverse. That's not to say that there isn't a subtle tone of darkness in Splatoon. The fact that the Octarians faced a total black out, which might possibly kill them, and you're basically running in there and stealing back there only means of saving themselves while deposing their legitimate ruler and leaving them in darkness and disorder is kind of dark, but that said, the tone of Splatoon remains very cartoony. The humans died because they didn't care enough about the environment (a very family friendly way to kill ourselves off in a game targeted for ESRB: E/CERO: A) and there are fossilized remains of a human playing a Wii U even though this is a Wii U game we're playing. The Octarians are still around in Splatoon 2, just stuck using flashlights to find their way to the kitchen.

I think the fun of reading darker subtext into Splatoon comes from the fact that the world is so very innocent compared to ours that these things if translated into human terms with human characters in our world would be a lot darker and more severe, so the game holds a satirical kind of mirror in front of ourselves. But I bet if you could ask an inkling historian "so how many people died in the Great Turf War?" the response would just be "What are you talking about?" and certainly both Inklings and Octarians would think we're nothing but violent savages.

I don't get the feeling that that many artists have much interest in making porn of the Splatoon characters. The most you find is some slightly more ecchi art of the squid sisters here and there and the occasional yaoi doujin, but I get the feeling that the appeal of the Splatoon characters is generally non-sexual for most of the fanbase or at least that sexualizing the characters in some of the internet forums creates a certain amount of controversy because a good number of fans find it to be somewhat unsettling.

I think there is something to this. There was a big wave of loli porn when the game was first announced, but something changed when it went from being the hot loli art meme to an actual game played by millions. Though being played by kids certainly never stopped people from drawing porn of the Pokemon girls or Youkai Watch or any number of other kids games.

The lack of identifiable squidgirl characters outside of Callie and Marie (who obviously aren't loli) is probably part of it. You can design a squid however you want, but porn and especially doujins rely on identifiable characters to draw attention and easily create scenarios and dialogue around. If you go to the trouble of designing characters from scratch in the Splatoon universe, that's a lot more work, and it will draw less attention because all you can tell from the cover is the artist and the fact that it's Splatoon related, so artists would rather stick to the safe bets like Granblue Fantasy that have lots of characters to work with.
