modern video games are made to look flashy and make you want to play them, not to actually be fun after you buy them. I don't think there was a single good AAA game in all of 2016

Is something wrong with (most) modern video games: Yes. The bigger-budget the modern video game, the more it clings to the toxicity of the "core formula", and the more it tries to make itself "accessible" to the point of being detrimental to the game experience.

Ponder if you will on how many open-world games there are now. What is more accessible than an open world? They drop you in a sandbox, they empower you to act upon the world, and then you go forth at your leisure. Say what you will about the massive time investment these games require to finish, but they are not "hardcore" or even "normal", they are as casual as Minecraft.

The other type, the linear world type, plagues the educated player with unskippable tutorials, with "narrative experiences" that frequently wrest control from the player entirely (re: new tomb raider) or at the very least drastically limit it. If you look at the amount of "narrative experience" games that are successful compared to the ones that are considered garbage, the ratio you get makes it obvious that most "narrative experience" games are cancer. Occasionally you get a story that is worth enduring this bullshit for, or a game that is better at hiding it, but most of the time you're stuck being hand-held by someone else's idea of how you should play their game.


Games are at their best when there are as few layers between the player and the core gameplay as possible.

PS2 games were finding a certain finesse about this, they were realizing that games were starting to get more complex, so they started finding ways to intelligently weave learning into the actual gameplay itself. Then we started chasing shinier graphics and the vast, untapped market of the normalfags.

Yeah, most modern games focus on graphics and creating a "cinematic experience" than they do actually creating a game. By the time you finish it, you'll never want to go back and replay it, I can only think of a handful of modern games I've given a second playthough

You ask an Inherent to pick up a fresh game with no explanation, they will be able to play it to completion. Inherents are those who grew up with gaming's glory days, days where games often would throw you in blind and say 'lol figure it out shithead', or where half the english titles in existence had translations so shitty you had to figure it out yourself. At the same time, Inherents come from the younger generations of "gamers" as well; anyone who welcomes challenge, who hates tutorials, who isn't afraid to delve deep just because something is hard or obtuse. If you've ever picked up the controller in the middle of a game you've never played before and it just felt right, you're probably an Inherent.


The problem is that because Ordinaries are more common, less and less games are being made that appeal to Inherents. Ordinaries are not necessarily stupid people, mind you, they are just what I like to call "game-stupid", and so a large problem with games being made to cater to Ordinaries is that a great deal of Ordinaries never get the chance to become Inherents. They never get that 'aha moment' where you start internalizing game logic, where you pick up a 3D platformer and you already know all the controls by heart.

The tragedy of gaming is that by trying to make games more "accessible" and "inclusive", developers are dooming these people to just float on the surface.

I play old and new games, and I feel like old games are better for a number of reasons. Obviously consumers are largely to blame because they are willing to buy and encourage publishers to keep demanding boring, uneventful games, but there is one particular thing that has been clear to me for quite a while.

People are ashamed to admit they like videogames. I don't mean this in the good way, as in they are afraid to talk about them in public *quite the opposite, unfortunately, but the majority of people want games to be movies or art. Yes this is common knowledge by now, but just look at how people react to actual videogames. Platformers or anything remotely colourful is "too child-like" or "for kids". For the most part a third-person game will be considered "too gamey" unless it is a "cinematic experience" with an emphasis on story, cutscenes, QTEs and a lack of actual gameplay. The average person seems to feel like they'll be mocked for liking a silly objectiveless game instead of acting like they love the newest empty, open-world game it doesn't even matter what genre or type of game it is now, it just hate to be open world**. There are people on this very site who are guilty of this as well. It's a shame, but at some point people have come to the conclusion that videogames aren't "cool" anymore.
