This isn't a complete flop financially, but depending on how many people were working and how much the Kickstarter went for, it does mean they have to rely on more Kickstarters in the future to make another game.

40,000 sales * 40$ per unit sold = $160,000 profit

I don't know how much Steam takes in regards to percentages, but I think it's traditionally 30% in the industry.

$160,000 * .30 = $48,000
$160,000 - $48,000 = $112,000

Most the sales probably happen within the first month, so let's assume another 10k people will pick it up by the time it's been out for a month.

50,000 sales * 50$ per unit sold = $200,000 profit
$200,000 * .30 = $60,000
$200,000 - $60,000 = $140,000

And that's without knowing how currency differences are handled, or how consoles are doing. Since PlayTonic is a relatively small studio and probably tries to be cost efficient, they probably get enough from this to survive for a short while. They were also intending to make the game anyways without the Kikestarter, so the key employees probably have a lot saved up for a rainy day and not in danger of going broke if they stay.
I'm mostly pulling numbers out of the air though. Review-wise it sounds pretty mixed because some flail for the nostalgia and idea of Yooka Laylee, regardless of the quality of the game itself.

All in all, I think it's just pretty average. The fans of this may end up crowdfunding future projects so it's likely Playtonic won't be going under. The incident with JonTron did branding damage but isn't enough or is irrelevant to the audience. Holla Forums has to do some chaotic shenanigans if it wants to sink a company for that sort of thing.

Also, once you get to the 70 pound tier, you have physical copies of the game being distributed, like a boxed copy or the USB N64 cartridge flash drive. Not sure if those have Steam integration and whether they contribute to numbers we see on Steam. There's about 6,003 backers that qualify that.
So it really becomes a question of how many digital keys are being played through Steam and how many are through console. 22,974 only qualify for Steam keys, interestingly enough. So it's possible that a number of the 40k players are backers or friends of backers who were given Steam keys because they had extra. I'd maybe go with 26k are backers as a shot in the dark, and have their cost thrown out of the equation as it's spent money. Also going with Euro this time. I'm a burger and just used to USD.
