Platformers General /pfg/

YOOKA-LAYLEE A SHIT
BUT… there's tons of good platformers, new and old. Let's discuss them and shit on Look a Failee… idk there's a joke there somewhere

ETC ETC ETC

I'd like to focus on new/recent platformers, underrated platformers, classic Rare, and shitting on Yooka-Laylee, but talk about whatever platformers you want. The ones I listed are just some suggestions I could think of and are some of my favorites. Didn't include Yoshi's Island because old, 2d, popular, etc and kind of doesn't fit with the other stuff as much but for the record it is the best 2d platformer ever, fite me

Have you guys seen the new Donkey video? He shits all over the game and puts it at the same level as Mighty No 9

I prefer action platformers, anyways Conker isn't a collectathon platformer, it's an action adventure game.

OH YEAH and I just remembered
Great platformers.

But where's the caveman?

That's what prompted the thread, honestly. Half of the games I suggested are what he mentioned at the end of the video. I think it's good to know that there are very recent and very awesome platformers, even if the genre is pretty slow-going now.

Dunkey makes good videos.

...

I saw the vid before playing today and I… Kind of like it so far. At the beginning at least, it's charming and fun.

Anyone here play Spark the Electric Jester?

I do! I fucking love it, though. His general design is a bit…

Fag.

agreed, but that's part of the magic.

I need fanart of spark and mike pence

There's nothing wrong with Banjo's approach, but sometimes I wonder how different the genre would be if it had never happened. Maybe it would be less about walking around, solving puzzles, and collecting things, and more about clever platforming challenges.

That's some appaling optimization, how the fuck is this game even meant to run on the Switch?

Maybe Super Mario Odyssey will answer your question later this year.

I fucking hope so, my man. I'm really looking forward to it. I hope it doesn't disappoint like YL is apparently doing for BK fans.

there isn't a better platformer than umihara kawase

The perfect game.

What a fucking joke.

It won't.

Any of you guys played Snake Pass? It is a mighty comfy gem so far and I'm ten levels in.

I have a feeling the game will leave me wanting more by the time I'm done.

Oh wow. I thought it was just my Intel 4000 HD Integrates graphics

You're almost finished, so you're up for craving it more. I hope the porn fills that hole in your heart.

I think i can deal with that. The game looks so low pressure that i can come back to it when i just need something therapeutic to play while i listen to podcasts or something. Besides, Noodle is adorable

Even better is that it looks like a fucking 360 game with added bloom. Just look at the ground

As for more recent platformers, I've been replaying a lot of PS2 era platformers. Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly "Press O to Platform" Cooper. Other than that I can't think of that many, or at least any that are good. I'm kind of sad they aren't around as much. Why does every kid just want to shoot shit now?

Oh, and they're considering DLC and a sequel to this game since it's doing better than they expected. Maybe they will find more ways to get more out of this snake setup they have. I think there's potential

I thought you meant Yooka Laylee, you fucking scared the shit out of me.

The game does look like an anti aliased 360 game, which is pretty fucking funny considering ahem was on it.

Why the fuck has NOBODY mentioned Rainworld since its release?

Seriously, it has to be one of the most well designed games I've played in over a decade, yet I've seen not a single thread on it on any website, even major sites like ign have left it completely unmentioned. I've held back making a thread about it or trying to discuss it, in anxiety of being called a shill, but enough is a enough.

Someone please tell me they played the fucking game, and that I'm not alone.

Oh no you don't, e-celeb shill.

It's funny that Nuts&Bolts had pretty similar problems in level design, and from what I recall got the same criticisms for vast unused stretches of levels even mitigated as they were with faster movement through vehicles, yet somehow they still made the same mistakes again with Yooka Laylee.

slugcat

Karma system + time counting down until the world kills you didn't look appealing, may check it out after the most recent changes though.

Kill yourselves. Now.

I actually saw that on steam and was considering getting it, but all the reviews say it has a bunch of grinding and artificial difficulty. Shill me on it user.

...

I think it's better in Nuts & Bolts, because you could build vehicles to bypass any barren stretches. Also, Nuts & Bolts has a way better soundtrack than Yooka-Laylee could ever hope to achieve.

I don't know where the fuck these eceleb worshiping faggots came from or where they got the idea that it's ok to directly link their videos but they need to be gone.

Report them then

They're wrong. You only need karma to open gates into the next area, it serves no purpose other than that. and if you think eating enough food to sleep for 3 cycles to enter said gate is grinding, then boy, then you're an idiot.

The game is unforgiving and cryptic, but it definitely isn't random. All the other creatures actively change areas and follow the same rules you do as a player. I mean for fucks sake, the game even lets you befriend normally hostile creatures just by having such flawless internal logic. I have never in my life felt like an entity in a videogame was alive until I played rainworld. Couple that with its great visuals, wonderful soundtrack, innovative mechanics that add such a unique twist to the metroidvania genre, and satisfying gameplay and you end up with a fucking masterpiece.

I seriously think this game is the best game made in the last decade.

Right here.

...

Because it's obvious
Mario 3 is best tho

For example on the ai behavior, they actively move around in an area and change areas even when you're not in said area, and if you piss one off or it wants you for its lunch, it'll follow you through multiple areas. I stole a vulture's mask for example, and the other vultures started to bully it over the course of a few cycles and it started to have a personal hatred of me. There are lore reasons behind it that I don't want to spoil, but they have a societal structure and have individual opinions of you.

Anywho, this vulture made it a personal vendetta to show up in every open area trying to kill me, to get revenge for ruining its status. I thought this deviant behavior was something I'd never really seen in a videogame before, unless it was a scripted event that was part of the intended narrative.

In this situation, it was just an aspect of the gameplay.

IMAGINE
Chameleon Blowjobs.
Wowza, Trowza gave me a mouthful, laylee!~~

I mean shit, even the writing in this game is masterfully designed. Here is an example of dialogue from the game after you are blessed with sentience and the gift of communication.

I went ahead put the text into hastebin, because neither ** or [spoiler] seems to work for some reason, I think it's due to the length of the text.

hastebin.com/hagumogebu.vbs

If you don't think this shit is planescape torment tier, I'll fucking autistic screech.

Ah yessss, ssssssuuck me, ssssssssuck me!!~ Yes, that'ssssss it Ahhhh ahh!
Oh no, I got a call~

...

I need jontron memes.

Hey remember when that one user made sucking sounds pretending to be Yoshi

Was Kazooie or Tooie the better Banjo game?

I think I liked tooie better because I really fucking hated note score and didn't care for a lot of the originals levels but I think a fair argument could be made for either of them since tooie had its own share of shitty stuff.

Tooie had a ton of creative ideas, but it was festered with backtracking and un-skippable sequences that made playing through it a chore. Compare to Kazooie, or Super Mario 64, for that matter, where areas, although expansive, are never too large for their own good.

Both are good but I always preferred 64, something about the gameplay of BK always felt a bit slow in comparison. I can't say they're bad games though, I especially like Tooie's music and world design

you did it Holla Forums you made it

Tooie's levels were bigger, had more to do in them, and were interconnected in multiple ways. As playable characters, Banjo and Kazooie together could do more than in the original game, and on top of that could act independently.
There's just so much more to do and see in Tooie that while I appreciate the compact and straightforward gameplay of Kazooie I can't pick it over Tooie.

Kazooie is by far the better game. Tooie is bogged down with massive, empty, and boring levels, not to mention shit like lock and key abilities, awful fps sections, and running like garbage. The only thing Tooie really did better was the bosses, except for the final boss.

Shit design

That's what I loved about it though, once you're done with a level in kazooie. It's over, there's nothing more to do, and that's boring as fuck. With tooie though, you always found little new things, which felt so fucking good when coming back.

One nitpick I have about Tooie is that the hud and pickups don't feel as full of life and polished as they do on Kazooie. It was fantastic and I absolutely loved it which left me confused on why they changed it.

Oh man, imagine if you could play a game that really looks like that. I think the future of gaming is when rendering is so fast that you can just play through levels with pre-render quality graphics, in real time. That's how you would be able to play something like what you posted. Like, imagine if those images you posted were actual screenshots of a platformer at some point. Holy fuck

Jak and Daxter is so fucking good, that whole trilogy is absolute gold. Literally the only reason I didn't include in the OP is I've played those games so much I forgot they exist as games you play, if that makes sense. Sly Cooper is alright, I remember thinking the pickpocketing and returning back to base was really, really cool as a kid. Ratchet & Clank seems pretty boring, from what little I've played I didn't understand what made it fun.

Obvious, but yeah. Yoshi's Island is the greatest though.

Yeah lemme make a webm for you because you're such a contrarian, anyone on youtube who people watch is automatically shit in your view. That's completely rational of you.

Tooie is still impressive to see, mainly with those large environments; probably because collectathon platformers haven't come far at all since Tooie, so just seeing a large expansive area and knowing that you can run all around it all and it will be covered in platforming challenges and puzzles and things to find is impressive. At least to me it was.

Dude why didn't you make a thread about it yet? I never heard of it but if it's as good as you claim then I can't wait to play it. I'm torrenting right now to give it a try. By the way, ignore people who call you a shill. It's fucking annoying but it's better to have overactive shill defense than not enough shill defense, as we can clearly see from so many other internet communities that have been overrun with shilling.

Also, a glance at metacritic suggests (((journos))) are shitting on the game because they suck at it. You should mention that in your thread.

I am that user!~

What games do you think we'll see from Rare following Sea of Thieves? They've shifted priorities from Kinect after low sales, and Phil Spencer has said that Rare will be crucial to the Xbox One's gaming future. Will they make something new like always, or make a sequel?

Plus, Phil has claimed to be a fan of Banjo-Kazooie since the N64, and even considered putting them in a future Smash game.

Don't see DESIGNATED Yooka laylee thread. Only played the first level and am not impressed. There's no weight to the controls, it feels like they're floating on air, the writing tries to be clever and falls flat on it's face, Yooka's annoying and should put on some fucking pants, Laylees pretty cute although can be a bitch.

You just described literally the entirety of all video game rendering advancement. Pick any PS1 game out of a hat, the pre-rendered cutscenes were impressive in their day but completely laughable compared to even the most low-end real time graphics rendering of modern games.

I mean something more like Pixar-quality graphics getting streamed into the game as you move in real-time (culling). Or with the platformer images that are just a creative real-life platformer mockup; the entire render is piped into the game, and the gameplay is on top, but it looks seamless. Like a comeback of Final Fantasy 7-9 prerendered background. There's a really good chance I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about

Unless you are going to run those games at subpar resolutions like 720x480 then you will have a hard time with all that raycasting used in most of those FMVs.

amazon.com/Love-Yooka-Laylee-Creamic-Coffee/dp/B01DY2FIAC

Kazooie was better. Tooie had bigger worlds but they were mostly empty. That would have been okay but the constant backtracking for everything really killed it.

Kazooie had levels that felt big but were actually compact enough to not be boring.

Platformers coming out this year:

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero
Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment
Blaster Master Zero
Spark the Electric Jester
Hollow Knight
Snake Pass
Super Mario Odyssey
Freedom Planet 2
Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap
Sonic Mania
Sonic Forces
Possibly Cuphead and La-Mulana 2
Possibly Soulstorm but that may be shit

Anything else I miss?

Goddamn I knew this was going to be an awesome year even disregarding platform games

I was kind of blown away by how good this was after how lazy Plague's campaign was
It's got issues but the biggest fault it has is that there's not enough of it

Also the game blue balled me by including the tony hawk's pro specter cloak (which obviously I wore for the whole game) but not having any level design to really use it in
Wish it had those treasure levels from the base campaign that required item use

This better not be a fucking eternal general. We've lost enough good discussion on Holla Forums to faggots planting the word "general" on a genre.

It doesn't even make sense here to have an /anythingg/ thread since you could literally make a board here if you wanted. Leave that shit back on 4cuck where it belongs.

you're a fucking mistake

I don't think you missed any. 2d platformers definitely doing well, but only on the indie side of things. I miss Rayman Legends and I wish we could get more 3d stuff, but Mario Odyssey looks like it could be really good.

This thread was made in "honor" of Yooka-Laylee. I won't be making more like this, but sometimes it's nice to have a general up for a bit. It would be nice to have a cuhrayzee general up too, haven't had one in a while.

That's what your mother said

I've not watched Bunksly's video, as I want to just enjoy the game. I want to forget about Jon Tron, all the garbage, and just have a good time. And at this point, it's been pretty damn fun.

Yooka makes me feel funny

I think you need to delete yourself. Also nice reddit spacing, faggot.

What's your opinion so far?

P O W E R O F U N I T YO W E R O F U N I T Y PW E R O F U N I T Y P OE R O F U N I T Y P O WR O F U N I T Y P O W E O F U N I T Y P O W E RO F U N I T Y P O W E R F U N I T Y P O W E R O U N I T Y P O W E R O FU N I T Y P O W E R O F N I T Y P O W E R O F UI T Y P O W E R O F U NT Y P O W E R O F U N IY P O W E R O F U N I T

I like it a lot, I only have 94 minutes so far, but it was a great 94 minutes. The game is prettier than I thought it would be. It just feels really nice, the music is really nice.
The whole intro sequence what with losing the book and all was kind of boring, the talking about the statue was boring, they didn't include a way to speed it up, unfortunately. Like it would seem traditionally you could hold B or A and speed through text, right? Well you can't in major cut scenes, and they have a way of dragging on. But it's not that bad.
The humor also seems pretty lame, maybe it was because I was a little guy, but Banjo just seemed more funny.
In terms of optimization it's spot on, on my FX 6300 and GTX 960 2GB I am getting a constant 65-70 (I lock it there to avoid those annoying drops to 59.9 and such).
I'm just in the first world, but it seems pretty easy. I'm sure it will get more difficult, but I haven't had to try a second time on anything yet.

I'm looking forward to playing more tomorrow, but I'm done for the night.

Runs perfect for me on a 960 as well

Just like to add I am playing on max graphs 1920x1080 with Vsync off.

Speaking of Failee…

HOLY FUCK

Pokemon community confirmed for worst celebs.

Odyssey can't come soon enough

Fuck my anus please.

The best part is that Super Mario Odyssey will look better and run better on a system roughly 1/4 the power of my GPU

I will just say something about the level design, in Banjo Kazooie the levels have a very distinct layout with strong central features to help with navigation like the cliffs and the lighthouse in Treasure Trove Cove or Clanker in Clankers Cavern or Spiral Mountain and Grunty's Lair in Spiral Mountain, or they themselves have a naturally distinct layout like the House and grounds in the haunted spooky level or Mumbos Mountain and it's natural Helix shape, in Yooka Laylee Tribal Stack Tropics is not at all like this, it has no distinct layout or a strong central feature it's a series of interconnected play spaces with no logic to their layout, they kind of just exist. The game is also visually noisy with lots of shit everywhere that doesn't accomplish anything, sure the areas of play have colorful things to attract the player but this is inherently poor compared to the more natural layour of Banjo Kazooie, there's a reason why everyone hates Witchyworld.

Wow that dude is a fucking idiot. What would have been better is if they tried the quiz show thing, said fuck it these suck and moved on or something.

Not sure if it counts as a platformer, let alone if it's coming out this year, but wasn't there some sort of classic styled "Not-Castlevania" in the works?

There's even a native /vg/ here anyhow, though I think it was dead/inactive last I looked. Most people that want to talk games seem to wind up here on Holla Forums rather than elsewhere on the site.

First time I heard of it.

Nigga that ain't a platformer, and neither is Blaster Master.

Ice Age 2 is good. Not a super orginal game but it is a solid game no matter what you think of the movies

alright
level with me for a sec
here are
three absolute BEST 2d platformers of ALL time
(in no particular order
1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
2. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (or Returns)
3. Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus

and each of them is different and kind of a subgenre with different level designs
so
just
levaing that out here

Super Mario World is also up there. That game is also a timeless classic

Mario 3 is better tho

You best be joking

This is the first time I've heard this. Wouldn't they hate Jolly Roger's Lagoon even more by that logic?

8/v/ doesn't need pointless divides like that.

He means Knuckles the Echidna in Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles

So I presume the general Consensus is Yooka Laylee is more Banjo Tooie then Banjo Kazooie?

It feels that way, especially with the levels not having a strong theme like the Banjo Kazooie ones. Lack of NPCs too is akin to Tooie.

I hope you're the jokester here

What are some platformers where pagies are freed from cagies?

Witchyworld isn't underwater it's the more obvious and solid example.

I'll play devil's advocate and ask if there's any hope for pic related

You should be fucking ashamed of this thread.

...

That was a really awesome game back in the day! Underrated 2D platformer. Especially loved the segments where you were inside giant monsters and stuff.

You should have seen it coming when rip off snek with wiki tanki-e from ant eater and brrid inde game

You know, it's always bugged me how much was lost between 3 and World. Why did they ditch all of those powers and the inventory?

kek

Anyone interested in this being a recurring general a couple times a week? Not all the time just here and there. I think it'd be nice to have a dedicated space for platformers of all kinds.

I can't always remember all the quality platformers, there's too many. If we want to make this general a recurring thing I'll do up a nice OP with all the good games, and an infographic or something.

In defense of Mario World, what was cut, really? Hammer Bros suit you rarely ever got, Tanooki was really similar to leaf, frog suit was really situational (but sad that it got cut), and the rest is just overworld stuff that let you skip levels and the like (SMW had GOAT overworld). They'd have been nice but the cape and fire flower were the star of the show in SMB3 as well. Also, fucking Yoshi is in SMW, which is awesome.

I think he might have been talking about other things, let me put it this way. 3 is the basis of the modern "generic Super Mario" style we've been seeing in NSMB and the much better "3D" games. World does a lot of its own thing, even replacing Goombas with an entirely different enemy and making them less common. 3 also had lots of very distinct world themes, and levels that centered around that idea mostly. By the time World rolled around they managed to better understand the cadence of level design and of progressing challenge in a level. 3 and World are very different games and you can argue which one is the best. For my money, I'd say it's Super Mario Advance 4, which thanks to Nintendo releasing it on the eShop you can now pirate it and/or patch it to have all the World e levels.

Generally, I like the overall feel and challenge SMB3 offers, but World had a better sense of "progression" I guess

It's too hard to choose. I'll just go with "play both".

Let me try to put it another way. We know 3 levels for what they look like, like "the level with the boot", "the short level with the oasis above you that you can fly to", "the level where you have to use a moving platform to climb a vertical drop", "the level where you can change the size by going through a door". With World, you can break down what you're doing in a lot of levels. For example, there's a lot of levels where you're mostly using moving platforms of some sort over death. All of those levels have an internal progression of their central gimmick until they pretty much run out of sane uses for it. 3's dedication to aesthetics and World's design progression are what made Galaxy 2 and 3D World some of the best Mario games.

Basically, they both have something to offer.

3D World and Galaxy 2 both adhere to this design philosophy, but for some reason 3D World is not even half as fun as Galaxy 2. I think there are a lot of various problems with 3D World that make it the least fun Mario to date, such as the severely dumbed down controls, lower scope/scale of levels, boring level design, extremely easy, less interesting gimmicks, less variety within individual levels, plasticky visual design, no cool starbits to always collect, etc. Galaxy 2 is a masterpiece. 3D World just feels massively scaled down and cheaper by comparison…

Ty 2 HD, if remakes count.

Like this game a lot so far, but who thought these quizzes were a good idea? I failed four times, and the fucking bird talks so slow, and you can't speed up! Fucked up twice because I was clicking through the text (Out of habit) and I answered the first one right as it appeared.

Having beaten it on NG+, It's an extremely solid platformer. It took a bit of getting used to, and the curios took until the Lich Yard to finally start making sense for me, but aside from that it was tied with Plague of Shadows for best gameplay. New enemies and bosses were alright (except that fish, FUCK that fish), and new music was pretty good. Missy a cute. A CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE

However, story is easily the weakest of all three campaigns, especially near the end (that fucking boomerang OC from that one rich autist is Specter Knight's old friend's son, also made by that same autist, AND he's the final boss; no I am not fucking kidding you).

I give it a Judgement Rush/10 for effort.

Recently I emulated conker. I had never played it before.
Man, that game was haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard. Dear god, the fucking alien at the end and the hover board race!
But I finished all of it. The ending got too real for a second there. Like it was all comedy and then serious shit.

What's so bad about Unity anyways? Explain it to me like I'm an idiot.

My concern may or may not derive from the fact that I've been working on an /agdg/ project in Unity…

How did you emulate it?

A Hat in Time never ever

I didn't mind the OC that much, probably because they did their own thing with him and he's just used as a plot device, and also because unlike what you'd expect from kickstarter OCs he's not some weird fetish bullshit
He's also portrayed as a retard which I imagine pisses off the creator
Really that's the only dark spot in an otherwise good plot, I liked Specter's backstory and his plight, was also neat how they worked the phase locket into it

Also the dad has a pretty good design

It's coming out this year though.

That much, I'll agree with you on. It could have been far, FAR worse.

pic not related I hope

And really, all of the backer characters ended up being a lot better than the shit you'd normally see, Baz still cracks me up
YCG must have curated that shit somehow to keep the furries out

Of course it's not. I just really like Sachichy's Shovel Knight art for whatever reason.

That's some good shit

...

It's association really. Any good project that has been developed with the engine generally is made with the professional version which hides their logo. So when you have a bunch of shovelware made with a free engine that plasters their logo on the front of it, that's all people will think of.

I don't think it's a shit engine, but I'm not a brogrammer. The attached webm is from a game called Hover, and it's unity as well.

Here's another.

Missy looks fucking adorable aaaaa holy shit
any more pics?

They were in BK so they must of thought people liked them.

I thought it was one of Rares "easier" games, perfect agent in perfect dark, that was hard.

Gruntys Furnace Fun was Better though. And so was the Banjo 1 boss fight.

Why would Unity force devs to use their logo at the start if they don't pay the fee to remove it? All it means is that only the shittiest Unity games have the Unity logo, since professionals will pay to remove it. That's an obvious bad decision.

the guns are much of what made ratchet and clank fun, but there was also platforming, and even if you could only use the wrench i think ratchet and clank 1 would still be a good game

in the second game, getting different guns and some old ones and being able to upgrade all the new ones without having to find secret stuff to do it made it even more fun, though the second game lacked elsewhere while still being, I guess, generally better than the first one
the third one was about as good as the second one, and after that I haven't played any of em

I liked Banjo-Tooie more.

Bigger, more moves, more characters and the tunes were just as memorable.

I consider the way the worlds overlapped each other to be a plus, not a minus.

Mainly to get the word out. as familiarity with the engine grows, they're banking on people consolidating their amateur development with the engine and generating 'pro' version sales.

Although that's backfired as we've come to know.

They could just stop now, everyone who they need to know what Unity is, knows what Unity is. The longer they let it go on the more we associate Unity with garbage.

Most Unity games I played were optimized like complete dogshit, but I don't know if that's the fault of the engine or the people using it.

I was kinda hoping that was the case. That's relieving.

Unity is definitely very accessable. I can see why hipstertrash would use it for their non-games.

I think the big reason it worked in Furnace Fun was because it was original and unexpected. Furthermore, you had a choice in the route you took and which tiles you had to deal with.

Bigger isn't always better. The worlds in Tooie (and Yooka-Laylee from what I've heard) just feel barren and empty. In BK, you had 100 music notes to collect spread across a medium world. In Tooie, you had 17 bundles of them spread across fuckhuge worlds. It's an matter of guiding the player vs having them wander aimlessly.

As for moves, I don't feel they added much except for splitting up the bear and bird and the moves that came with that. Everything else was little more than a way to gate players where puzzles are concerned.

From Sachichy, or of Missy? I have to assume the former, since I don't have any other good images of Missy on me right now.

Regular project64 with glide64 for video plug in and I used my xbone controller for pc.

I'm thinking of doing Jet Force Gemini next, but I'll add that one to the list. Hopefully the controls wont be a giant pain in the ass. If you have anymore I should play let me know.

Either will do.

This is all I found. First three are from pixiv, the others are official art and in-game respectively. Don't even ask me to look up Western fanart for Missy, I don't even want to know how bad it is.

Project64 with that same plug-in crashes partway into the intro cutscene ("It all started yesterday… A Bad Fur Day…") and I have no idea why. Fucking PJ64.

Also more from Sachy.

It's not an ugly game. Now on the second world and it's still a lot of fun. I'm how ever not exited for the next quiz, because duck guy said there'd be more, and they'd be harder.

Ugly games for ugly, balding characters.

Try this. Get to the scarecrow part with the original plug in then turn off the game, change the plug in and load the save, skip the cutscene with L if it comes up again.

Angels, the both'a yous.

Oh fuck, you figured out I'm secretly a pair of twins shitposting on Holla Forums! Deploying anti-spy measures!

It crashes before actual gameplay starts. The intro is before the scarecrow. I've played the game before, same config on a different computer, no problems, dunno wtf PJ64's problem is now

Gahdammit, just when I thought you's were the same person…

Mate, re-download the thing, try everything, don't be a nigger. How are you going to impress your doggirl gf if you can't even get an old game to run?

Aaaaaaaaaaannd you're filtered.

Incredible, the number one reason not to have a general for platformers has already revealed itself. I thought it'd take longer.

I don't know why pixiv requires me to have an account…

Is there some history here that I am not aware of?

why bother complaining
like just dont look at it lmao
like its bloody pixels mate calm down

Having "general" in the thread title inflicts the thread with a gypsy curse that attracts faggots
It's just the easier explanation compared to "the same threads continued over a long period of time generates a community around it which will include faggots"

Probably my favorite Genesis games. It's just a shame that none of the sequels were that good.

That probably happened because it's easier to make Banjo-like games. Mario 64 and Sunshine(which was obviously unfinished) are the only games I can think of that take the acrobatic route, and those took Nintendo firing on all cylinders make.

Well, I didn't know anything about that, I just saw conker and thought posting in the thread about my recent emulation experience was relevant.
I'm sure user wouldn't have been triggered if I'd referred to an anime girl instead of a doggirl, but the doggirl gets them every time.

That's why you're here

Why are anime autists so fucking hypocritical? I hate you both personally, but fuck.

fuck it, i'm playing bayo for the 3rd time, hopefully that turns out better since the only goal there is to see what it's like at a good framerate. i didn't expect to feel insulted by their lack of effort or originality. i just wanted to play a fucking platformer.

I don't know what's funnier; That line itself, or the fact that you actually played yooka to come to that conclusion.

i should have known, but i was still curious to see.

I think the most hilarious part of Yooka Faylee is the mass-realization that if we really wanted to return to Banjo Kazooie, we could just play fucking Banjo Kazooie instead of a shit knockoff.

You know, I think I've finally figured out why "inspirational developers" like Inafune or the people from Playtonic never got the approval of the "big, bad, dumb" publishers. Because they're fucking hacks. All of them. They're not victims, they're dumbasses.

What a time to be alive

no shit. there's a very good reason double fine was doing kinect shovelware before they crowdfunded broken age

Are platformer level makers relevant to this thread? Because I'd like to talk about SMBX 1.3 only. SMBX 38a can go die in a ditch for all I care.

Nope, but I used to make shitty levels for SuperTux if that counts.

SPOOKY CHECKED

praise satan

(hellchecked)
SuperTux looks interesting for what it is, though the physics feel pretty sluggish.

I've really wanted to play Snake Pass but I the only torrent I found just freezes up on me.
Am I just retarded?
I just want to snake

Yes it is
Kill yourself.

It's going to be a less optimized, at best slightly poorly controlling version of the first three games.

You think they took notice of Playtonic's fuck up and will keep their Jontron cameo in?

It doesn't help that the controls are handled the same (Crash 2) throughout the three games instead of being replicated for each specific game. It would make gameplay in Crash 1 feel off with Crash 2 handling.

I think if they're smart, they will say absolutely nothing… The way it should be.

It's not actually a bad engine, but Unity was one of the first engines that combined ease-of-use with a liberal license. These facts meant that anyone could shit out a crap game in a few days, and with how broken Steam Greenlight was at the time, it was laughably easy to get idiots to buy your shitty Unity game.

What this guy said, basically.

I used the CODEX release and had no problems. Find it on any torrent site.

So wait did the Enchanted locked which turned Shiled Knight into Enchantress somehow transformed into the Phase Locket later? I didn't get that part.

Why do Sonic games keep reusing GHZ? I hear that the 3rd character might be a custom character.

da fuck

The evil magic amulet in the tower is a separate thing, the locket was just a normal ass locket that was given power by the Enchantress to keep Specter Knight on task
Then after it's conditions were fulfilled and it was used for it's intended purpose it retained some measure of power as the phase locket

The idea of using an object like that to fulfill a magical contract is really fucking cool, wish I saw it more often

In hindsight, we really should've known that little people would actually be even shittier than corporations if given the chance to create. I guess the most important thing this new Era of Information has taught is that humans are 10x shittier than we ever thought they could be, and we're no better than that figure ourselves, either.

OP here, this thread is for all platformers, the OP post is only a suggestion for what to discuss since Yooka Faylee just dropped. I used to like Vinny playing community SMBX levels on Vinesauce.

Yeah, why every asshole that does anything has to widely broadcast their politics and let it influence their project is beyond me. Maybe it's da jooz idfk

I really do think Sega is the best company these days.

Unreal 4 has equally AGDG friendly terms and is a shitton better

It was forever ago when I was far less experienced and Unreal 3, but when I worked with it I didn't care for the engine. It seemed like I had to fight against it to set up anything other than a FPS, whereas Unity was more of a blank slate that let me build what I wanted.

Also I've got over a year put into my project so I'm not likely to restart in a new engine without REALLY good reason.

I thought it was just that damned duck

SHAKE SHAKE
SHAKE SHAKE
Marina is my waifu.

Marina Le Pen

at that point I just brute-forced that shit because fuck that

Seriously, this seems like such an obviously flawed concept, it's so anti-fun. How do they fail to see it? Successful in banjo or not, it sucks.

It's pretty obvious they had no idea what made banjo so good, this game is so fundamentally fucked that even if they had taken more time to polish shit it wouldn't have worked.

The worst shit ever is the fact that if you beat a highscore on rextros games the first play of them, it doesnt count, you have to play up to 5 minutes of tedious shitty minigames twice at a minimum to get all the pagies. Also the last boss is like 20 phases of aids. Some text is skippable, some just isn't, the rules for power-ups working sometimes changes, sometimes there are quills in boxes othertimes there just aren't any but that means you have to break them all to check. It's honestly one of the most infurating games I've ever played.

Fucking Mario 64 had no competition to copy and it didn't make you collect 100/145 of the main collectable just to fight the boss and see the credits.

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

I found the file that would contain Jon's voice in YL. I can't find the unpatched version of the game anywhere, though… Does anyone have this file? It's in YookaLaylee64_Data\StreamingAssets\Audio\GeneratedSoundBanks\Windows

I mean, it's definitely far from perfect, but I'm having a fantastic time, none the less.

It's got such a warm, friendly atmosphere, I feel so cozy playing it.
I do honestly get a good bit of satisfaction from the platforming that's there.
Is it amazing? No. But so far, six hours in I'm having a blast.

That's how I feel too! It's not quite Banjo but it's got a lot of the right stuff… It's definitely really comfy and fun to explore around in.

I'd help, but I don't know how to find out whether my copy of Yooka-Laylee is 1.0 or 1.1.

Banjo is nearly 20 years old, the aim should have been to make the game actually better than banjo, not similar enough that people see the similarities.

Banjo is 10x the game this heap of shit is, there is no excuses for not even coming close with a bigger budget and no real restraints on the development.

I'm not trying to shit on you for having fun, but trust me that will not last, the first couple of zones are far better than the first ones, the casino and the space level are fucking terrible to navigate and aren't remotely comfy.

Can you MD5 hash that file? That's all I need to know.

...

Probably with an emulator.

It really does make me wonder how they didn't knock this out of the park. It was so much of the same exact team… There's clearly a lot of love put it into some specific aspects, at least. But thanks for the warning, I hope I continue to enjoy it.

Yeah, that's the same patched file I have. I'm going to keep asking around for sure.

I see shovel knight treasure trove is out…

Is the extra content worth it? I played the original and enjoyed it but can't be bothered with 3 extra campaigns if the levels are identical.

& Knuckles > Sonic 2 > Sonic > Sonic 3

Lumping 3&K together is a disgrace to the superior game

I can't tell if you're b8ing

I'm serious
&Knuckles is so far ahead of 3 that I honestly believe playing them together makes the experience worse.

Mario World > Mario 3

Dunkey is an /ournig/

Why? They were literally developed at the same time, by the same team. They were only split up because the full experience couldn't fit on one cartridge. They're the same quality.

He's actually Jewish.

He actually makes really good videos

If I had to hazard a guess, the quiz questions talk about things you never would pay attention rather than one you would have had to at some point. Like how different music turtles there were inside of the big one in Bubblegloop Swamp, or how many buttons did the massive snowman have in Freezzey Peak. I mean shit, you make it sound like they didn't even play the Furnace. Just keep in mind I haven't played it yet and am just judging from what I'm hearing.

You should reiterate, because I've missed your point, are you arguing for or against quizzes, or?….

A fan romhack remaster which fixes all the outdated shit and allows mouse and WASD would make this game worth replaying and even gain game of the season

Fuck your dubs, there are no good jews

Ape Escape will always be one of my favorite series.

So is Y&L worth birating?

Fucked around and got a triple double
Dunkey makes great videos, chill tf out Holla Forums he's not subverting anything

I'd definitely>>12339081
say yes.>Dunkey makes great videos, chill tf out Holla Forums he's not subverting anything

What did he mean by this?

I'm guessing that's a no then…

It's basically the same levels as the last two with even shittier power ups, no overworld map, an extra dumb story that would have been worse than no story at all, and the clunkiest movement mechanics of the three.

I didn't bother with Shovel Knight after the main game, so I don't know. I'd guess yes, it's probably up to par with the other content. Go for it

lol nvm I guess it's trash

It's better than the base game and you're a retard for not playing it

bump

Oh, I miss-clicked, it's worth it, brother.

I can't say anything about the quality of the games but that's a one big logical error you're making here

Which of the three are better than the base game? Be specific. Nerd.

You mean which of the two
And they both are in some ways, while being worse off in others
But Specter of Torment is where the improvements far outpace the setbacks in my opinion

OG Shovel Knight is Mega Man combined with Castlevania and Zelda II
Specter ditches a lot of those aspects and picks up Ninja Gaiden, Sanic, and Tony Hawk

Game's pretty fun, too. The Edgy power is a fun as it is hilarious.

can someone just make a conker inspired game already, please

Where is the soundtrack?

Dunk Cucks should >>>/suicide/

Nice try Holla Forums
I'm joking of course, he can die

That would be a bad idea. That type of game would be boring and very cringy today. Imagine a game where there is no 4th wall at all and it's all movie parodies. Would be fucking terrible.

I'm watching a playthrough of Yooka-Laylee and I've noticed that they seem to be recycling the same characters from every level over and over again, with like only one unique character to each level and even then they don't see to be too well matched, theme-wise, to the (unremarkable) levels.

Did Banjo Kazooie do this? I could swear most of the characters in that were tied to the levels and themed appropriately, the only carry over was Mumbo Jumbo and the Jinjos.

I just beat Barrel Cannon Canyon in DKC and reached the 1sr shrekpoint

No, there were different characters for each level besides mumbo jumbo and the move mole of course.

Thanks for the recommendation fam, you weren't joking when you said this game was GOAT.

That's what 2 million pounds buys you these days I guess.

They can't keep getting away with it.

dunky is white though…

Wow, user, you're so smart.

I still like his videos but now it's depressing to know that he's one of the assholes who hates all Trump voters. Eh I guess I'll stop watching him, not like I ever watched a single ad anyway

Did it bomb?

Who replaced replaced Holla Forums with /r/gaming again?

I don't understand what all of the gripe is about. I've played through a couple worlds of YL and so far I've had a fairly good time. I think the issue is everyone got all autistic and over-hyped.

(You) tbh fam
:^)

My favourite platformer is defrag.

who /precursorlegacy/ here?

Yes. Too bad I've played Jak trilogy so many times I can't really replay anymore for at least a few years, too familiar.

Naughty Dog has really disrespected their roots. Why can't they make another Jak game akin to the first one?

They released a statement with something along the lines of "games are more mature now", meaning that they will continue churning out movies

p lewd

I enjoyed The Last of Us, but that's pretty retarded.

...

...

can it even be considered a rip off?
I mean, A&C will never be finished to begin with

Yeah, it was a pretty surreal game that wasn't solely defined by its caveman themed, and fuck did I love it.

Youtube comments. What a fucking wonderful place.

2017 is indeed a great year for platformers.

Also Megaman X Corrupted and Metroid X Fusion NEVER EVER

The last level is where the game starts to shine. They should have put more work into this game, added more of everything and especially added some variation to climbing on bamboo all the time.
Still a fine experience, but it could easily have been a lot more considering how good the base gameplay is.

Fuck I also forgot Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.
And no one of you fags even mentioned it.

I wonder how easy it would be to add new levels

no problem, my dude.

Megaman X Corrupted is still getting updates to this day, so as much as NEVER EVER is funny, it's not accurate.
A funny and accurate joke would be saying it got scraped and started over 20 times after the author decided the frameworks and engines he created weren't good, and it'll come out in 2099, after the creator died and passed it on to his grandchild, who also decided to start from scratch 5 times, and Megaman X was considered classical music.

...

my nigga

i mean, it'd probably be tough because there are so many, but if the top row were to be the essential game of each subgenre i.e. 3d platformer, metroidvania, run n jump, etc. and each path branched outward more and more specifically and niche it'd probably be a pretty useful thing. especially if good freeware/fangames/etc. were also folded in, like Psycho Waluigi and shit. idk. i'm a big fag

You know both presidential candidates are plants, right?

This, but not because of his political opinions. Anyone that watches people talk over games is retarded.

meant to quote

The only reason it became popular in the first place is because in this digital era where everybody is connected, capable of sending and retrieving information at the speed of light, able to communicate with someone on the other side of the globe at any time of day, people have never felt more alone.

So like our grandparents keeping the TV on just for the noise, people are watching other people commentate over video game footage because it's like they've got a visitor to keep them company and it's easier than taking care of a pet.

...

Someone recommend me something like SM64. Anything. I don't care.

I bought it and I hope I won't regret it. Why do ecelebs need to fuck up everything and furthermore why do Holla Forumsirgins even care? Holla Forums constantly talks about how other internet societies get butthurt over the stupidest shit and here we are butthurt over someone's opinion. So what if the devs didn't agree and removed Jon's VA? That's their right and I don't know about you but I didn't pay for the game to hear some eceleb speaking into a microphone. I bought it because it is a video game.

Pics related never get enough attention

Yes, but it's outright disrespectful to make a huge show of removing someone from your game just because you don't agree with their ideology, which has nothing do to with voice recording for a video game. I bet most people didn't even know he was actually in Yooka-Laylee until they said he was out of it. It's ridiculous, and I hope that the people behind A Hat in Time stick to their game and keep JonTron in this time.

I can see where you're coming from and I totally get it but I still can't see how it suddenly makes Yooka-Laylee a bad game.

That, in itself, doesn't make Yooka-Laylee a bad game. All its other plentiful faults, unoptimized console framerate aside, make for a mediocre experience. It's the non-varying voice clips that make the characters sound annoying; the directionless, way-too-open hub world (around Tooie levels); the absolutely shit minigames; the same exact characters appearing in around every level, instead of Playtonic using different and new characters to make their world feel actually occupied like in the original BK, Tooie, and even Nuts & Bolts; the quizzes that ask you about shit you have absolutely no idea, because the game never indicated that you had to pay attention to these things, nor did they stand out on their own. Everything about this game, sans maybe the graphics, feels unpolished and barebones.

No one ever said the game was bad because they removed an e-celeb, I see this confusion a lot: People are mad at the company, so they're not buying the game. In addition there are people who did buy the game who feel it doesn't live up to the hype for a multitude of reasons. Both are valid criticisms.

You could at least tell us what it's called,

I made this thread because I love platformers and wanted to talk about them for a bit with the release of YL, but obviously plenty of people also love platformers and want to discuss them. So I think I'll make it a recurring general. I'll begin work on a bigass infographic, doesn't seem like it'll be too hard but I haven't made one before, anyway next thread I'll present what I have and people can make suggestions for what to add to it. Will be pretty comfy.

...

Anyways I'll just post shit a couple of fags are doing for an unofficial update to SMBX 1.3.

...

...

...

...

...

Do you want the thread to derail into furfaggotry?

...

Fuck sakes, furfags ruin everything

For years Holla Forums has had issues with the mere mention of Klonoa resulting in huge dumps of gay furshit and threads being ruined from the first reply by said furshit. The best option is to just let the series stay dead because life would be far worse.

Where can you find this update?

As far as I know, the stuff presented are previews of what is to be included in the next update for SMBX 2.0, which isn't released to the public yet. The current public build can be found here:
horikawaotane.com/smbx
And upcoming features are shown in this blog:
horikawaotane.com/smbx/blog/

What is deadpool? I will never why normalfags eat that shit up.

Judging by his Mr. President video, I would guess he is a Bernout.

So is shitting on Yooka-Laylee a meme or something? I've been playing it since release, it runs at smooth 60fps on my mid-tier machine with only AA off, and the gameplay is exactly what they've been showing since the very beginning, what the fuck. Why was everyone all over this when they revealed the gameplay videos and somehow you all hate it for no reason now that it's out.

They've been saying they're gonna make new Banjo-Kazooie, they did exactly that. Why is everyone hating?

Just 100%'d it because of how many people were shitting on it, and I have to say it was a pretty good game. The amount of people shitting on it honestly makes me wonder if microsoft paid people to shit on the game. I mean, I don't think it will be remembered as a classic, like Banjo-Kazooie, but it's not that bad.
