Now, what's interesting is the next remakes will be Diamond/Pearl/Sapphire, but they don't really need remakes. Unless they remake the entire region in the same engine as Sun/Moon, there'd be no point to updating it.

While we are on the topic, what are some decent competitive Pokemon teams for beginners? I'm thinking about joining the April event they have going for sun and moon but have never played online. I watched my cousin at a competition and it's crazy how different the game is when you're playing against other people. It's like you're attacking their stats more than their health.

Also, any tips in general would be appreciated.

Now years later Dragons are the top shit like it's yugioh or something what do they do. Just make another type that happens to smash dragons in the matchup, but here it's dumber because how in the fuck is a fairy immune to a dragons attack.
So over 20 years their only method of fixing something that's broken is just making a new type that out classes it.
Also it's been over 20 years and changes they've made to Pokemon are so god damn minimal past adding like 1-4 of the games new moves to them, like in gen 4 they changed what defined being a Physical and Special attack you'd think that would mean the developers would rework the stats and movelists of older mons to support a change but no they just left that shit to rot.

If you want a Pokémon game much better than what it actually is, the best thing to do is to actually make it yourself, either as a whole new game or as a romhack of the existing Pokémon versions (since there are tools to make it more easily for Gen 3 to Gen 5 games).

But you shouldn't expect anything outside of the usual rehash from Game Freak. They know their licence prints money, and while they deluded themselves into thinking they're innovating, they just can't deviate too much from their base game, or else they'd lose their sacred cow.

Everyone is using this thing. It's fast, and hits hard. If it can go before an opponent, odds are it'll kill most shit designed to kill it. Most people pack it with Groundium Z for an almost-guaranteed OHKO, but some give it choice scarf so it can outspeed other 'Chomp. Some people run them bulky to get off a Swords Dance to make them guaranteed to kill anything.
Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Poison Jab, Fire Fang, Rock Slide… And Protect.

Despite most sets running recoil moves, everyone picks this to deal with Steel types this gen. Some people give it Snarl to reduce Sp.Atk, but most heavy hitters are physical right now. Intimidate deals with that. Part of many people's "3 type core" (look it up on Smogon & websites advising how to build teams) Often packed with Firium Z.
Flare Blitz, Wild Charge, Extreme Speed, Will-o-Wisp, Snarl… And Protect.

Shot up in popularity thanks to an obscure forums analysis + number crunching, along with it winning a championship. Provides reliable speed control (Tapus bring out terrain, the terrain seed boosts it's sp.def and Unburden makes it the fastest thing, then uses Tailwind on turn 1 first- guaranteed unless it gets taunted) and support via Will-O-Wisp. It's 4th move is a wild card. Most pack disable to stop support moves or choice attackers. I personally don't like it since the support move must have already gone off to disable it, and people are using Life Orbs to trick people out. Some give it a weather move- if not to support their own then to disrupt the other team's. Always comes with Psychic or Misty Seed. Common lead with Tapu Lele (covers each other's weaknesses, gives Tapu Lele the much needed speed boost without a scarf) or Tapu Fini (lives longer. While Misty Terrain stops Will-O-Wisp working, it can use Swagger on allies for free boosts)
Shadow Ball, Tailwind, Will-O-Wisp, Disable, Haze, Swagger, Weather Moves- but no Protect. Major weakness.

Everyone loves Tapus, and I think we'll keep seeing them even after the limits on Alola are taken off.
Tapu Lele hits hard. It's psychic moves hit harder thanks to Psychic Terrain- but it's just a tad too slow & frail. In fact, while it's ideal to kill Garchomp, Garchomp can usually kill it if it goes first. People used to run it with a Choice Scarf, but now with it's BFF Drifloon, some are giving it Life Orb or Choice Specs instead. Some use Psychium Z.
Psychic, Moon Blast, Shadow Ball, Thunderbolt. Sometimes Protect when it doesn't have a Choice item.

It's typing & decent defense means you can switch it in on some physical threats. But it's terrible Sp.Def means it won't last long. Not to mention Arcanine checks it hard with it's Intimidate. Most people used to run it with Focus Sash, but some are running it with Choice items, Assault Vest (so it can barely hang on), or even making it bulky. Some are abusing the high crit rate of some of it's moves and giving it a Scope Lens. No matter what you use, don't bring it out until your foe doesn't have something that can OHKO Kartana before it can kill them. Once it has a kill or two under it's belt to Beast Boost it's attack, you'll be fine (if you go first). A Late-Game Sweeper as they call it. Trading for this one is easier as the player can catch 4 of them in Sun.
Leaf Blade, Smart Strike, Sacred Sword, Night Slash… And Protect.

Everyone's darling when it first came out. It just doesn't fucking die- provided you build it right. Some go purely defensive with Heavy Slam + draining moves, others make it a special attacker and usually use tricks from other Pokemon to give it more power. Hard to get in trade, but has a myriad of options no matter the nature. Nearly always comes with Leftovers.
Heavy Slam, Giga Drain, Leech Seed, Substitute, Flash Cannon, Flamethrower… And Protect.

A heavy hitter like Lele, but thanks to it's speed can dish it out first. Alolan Marowak used to counter it, but it's fallen out of popularity leaving Garchomp. It's Dazzling Gleam can usually deal with it, but build it carefully and get those IVs to 31 with hyper training. Always built to be a sweeper, but some have tried to use Calm Mind on it- it's not easy. Life Orb, Magnet, Focus Sash, or Air Balloon are often used- some even opting for Electrium Z- but remember Z-Moves still do 0 damage to things immune to it.
Thunderbolt, Discharge, Dazzling Gleam, Volt Switch, Taunt… And Protect.

If you want Trick Room, or just need something that is hard to kill- this'll do it. It's Download gives it decent odds on boosting it's Sp.Atk to a decent level, and it's move pool helps coverage from there. It can set up Trick Room- but don't forget using the move when TR is already in effect undoes it. So pack it if you want something to stop TR- even if you don't use it yourself. Some even give it Return in case it gets an Atk boost from Download or an opposing Arcanine is running Snarl. The only thing that gives it grief are Kartana's Sacred Sword (which something else on the team can kill), or a Z-Move (which you might want so a late/mid game sweeper can relax). Always comes with Evolite and nothing decent comes with Knock Off right now. If you want Z-Conversion, look at it's evo.
Ice Beam, Thunder Bolt, Trick Room, Return, Recover… And Protect.

The rest, shorter.

Bulky to all hell, Misty Terrain helps stop Status Effects, but it can't use Scald to spread burn either.

Hits hard, but people aren't keen on Grassy Terrain since it helps opponent. Only best for hyper-offensive teams.

Aurora Veil is a great move, and Ninetails can kill Garchomp. If it doesn't go first, or you switch it in, it will die to the first physical move that hits it. So either keep it in reserve to deal with Garchomp (providing it doesn't have Tailwind or Choice Scarf to aid it), or bring it out to set up Aurora Veil.

Extreme Evoboost is fun on paper, but it's getting predictable on how it's used and who it's partnered with. Then again, the current meta's most popular Pokemon rarely pack Taunt or the like to stop it. Usually they blast it with a Z-Move and pray, or use Earthquake to kill it in the cradle along with it's support partner. Smeargle helps support it with Redirection and using status moves on foes. Clefairy helps with redirection, weakening moves that hit both of them like EQ, or helping allies move first under Trick Room with After You. Most people pass onto Espeon or Krookodile (to abuse Stored Power or Power Trip respectively) and then have one of the Tapus use Psych Up off that (and they sometimes help if the set-up fails). If you want to use it, be damn good at prediction, ignore the allure of Espeon & Krookodile (unless the situation calls for it), and pass it onto something that's tough to kill before hand (Tapu Fini, Celsteela, Porygon 2) to make it able to hit harder and make it unkillable.

Free turn to set-up is always great- though because of it's wide array of support + attack options people tend to focus attacks on it to kill it ASAP (once that Disguise is gone, it's terrible defenses will get it killed in 1 hit). Either Swords Dance then attack, or use Curse/Destiny Bond to screw up those who are setting up/sweeping. Z-Curse even fully heals you (before the HP cut), and some have used that to great effect.

The 6th wheel on most teams. It will always go first unless you have priority or Tailwind. It hits hard then dies, or offers support to an ally (usually a much needed cog in a set-up plan). It has the ability to average out it's high speed with an ally (Speed Swap I think) but no one is using it.

The Current Meta's bane (IMO):
- Trick Room. Everyone answered the lack of speed control with Drifloon. Tailwind almost guarantees your foe will be going last under Trick Room- plus so few people pack Taunt. This gen also brought a TON of great slow Pokemon. But once people see Araquanid and Oranguru, they know Trick Room is coming.

- Hyper offense. Few people are packing status lowering or status causing moves (except Arcanine's Intimidate, and Drifloon Support). If you have something bulky that can survive, set up as they bounce against you.

- Predictable. Garchomp, Arcanine, and Tapu Lele will always be in higher ranking battles. Drifloon as well, for now. Use online calculators, learn what is faster than them or survives them, learn what kills them in 1 or 2 turns. Just don't be surprised if (at first) it looks like the only way to kill the top 4 is to use your own Garchomp or Tapu Lele.

Oranguru is probably better for TR if your team relies on it and you can Instruct various spread moves (Heat Wave Torkoal). Unless they have two Taunt users or something with Roar/Whirlwind for some reason it's almost guaranteed you're going to get it out first turn.

The problem with that is that there's only or two new dragon type pokemon per generation, that are guaranteed to have a base stat total of 600 or more and end up being the new flavor of the month on some smogonshitter's clipboard. While I agree they're more annoying than dragons, at least there's a number of fairies to choose from.

One of the most notable victim of over-innovation is the COD series. Just look at it the first game is good and they kept innovating game after game to the point where they can't add anything to the game anymore. They've literally already reached the plateau of diminishing returns.
Meanwhile pokemons are keeping it fresh by adding nothing to the game but new pokemons…. they knew that if they added everything the fans want in one go, they will be having a hard time adding anything to it
