There isn't ever going to be a "workers revolution." The revolution will need to be a small group waging war against the state. This is how it has always been done. Revolution comes not with the establishment of a new class but with the degradation and immseration of an old one.
This is why rural workers were instrumental in all revolutions that called themselves communist in the 20th century and why the CNT saw its biggest recruitment pool not in the relatively established proletariat, but rather from poor agrarian workers or people who had recently had to move to the cities to become workers.
Thus the degradation of the proletariat is contrary to conventional wisdom not a bad thing but a good thing and the biggest potential is indeed found in those usually cast aside as lumpens.
