It's basically Sonic meets Kirby, except you get the powers from designated power locations rather than eating enemies, and you can hold two at once to switch between at will.

The earlier beta builds didn't even have Sonic 4 physics. I remember playing it with the first build they released when they replaced sonic with the dragon girl and decided they didn't want it to be a sonic fan game anymore. With each build they released they fucked shit up even more because of If my hazy memory is reliable feedback of people who played the beta builds who couldn't get good. I remember arguing with one of the developers about the changes and he basically told me that he wanted the game to be accessible to the people who were having trouble with the game.
Vid related is how the game should have been, but no, they just keep on having to ruin the game with each build that came along because they listened to fan feedback of people who couldn't get good. It fucking sucks to see a game with great potential get ruined.

Speaking of which, does anybody have any of the early builds of Freedom Planet? Years back my HDD failed and I lost the beta build I had.

I honestly don't see a huge difference between the beta footage you showed and the gameplay I watched of the final product. Then again, it has been a couple years and I never played Sonic games in the first place. What made the final product a disappointment compared to the beta, social justice aside?

I can answer this. Normally, in Sonic, you have momentum. If you're going forward full speed and let go of the direction on the pad, Sonic will take some time to slow down and eventually stop. In Sonic 4, letting go of the pad results in Sonic immediately stopping with no momentum at all. There's also other issues with 4, like being able to slowly walk up straight vertical inclines.

I honestly don't know of social justice drama surrounding the game. The final game was a downgrade from the initial beta and that was my reason for not buying it.

The devs are following Mr Shitface and a handful of really liberal people on Twitter, but I can't find anything on the game's timeline except a couple of token tweets about #InternationalsWomensDay and #StrongFemaleCharacters. I can't even understand how that would make it to the final product, or what the game's physics engine must be doing to let it work. Running up walls and on ceilings has always been a bit quirky in sonic games, but Jesus.

My theory, which I have no real evidence for, but makes sense, is that the game was originally developed as a cheapo mobile game to rake in nostalgia bucks. The physics are like that to make it easier to control with a touch screen. All the zones are basically remakes of zones from Sonic 1 and 2 for the nostalgia appeal. They just renamed it Sonic 4 and made console/PC ports to get a little more cash from it.

Well, Carel is the only character who can roll in first game. Though it's only useful when going down slopes to get some extra speed because on flat ground and upward slopes you just lose it instead, albeit not instantly. In general in that game physics are all over the fucking place.

That's really easily fixable, too, All you have to do is assign a state to each animation in regards to gravity and sprite direction.

if anim_walking is being played, (or if anim_running isn't being played which is probably better), set character sprite rotation to 0, which would either vault them like crazy or un-link them from the wall, assuming they did normal shit to pull this off instead of autistic disorder crazy shit that's probably impossible to pick apart.

Just beat it. It gets pretty good toward the end, except for the final boss fight. It's not a bad fight, but it's rather underwhelming. The soundtrack is really fucking good, though.
