240p screen of the 3DS and DS sprites on a 3DS for combat with jarring higher resolution images for bosses (who all have the same damn background instead of working in set pieces to have the bosses fight in like before).
They removed the littlest of technicality in the game, I spent a while looking into this.
For Comparison I'll compare 3 to 4 since 3 used the old stat system and 4 uses it's own new one that Final kept
Starting at simply how stats work
Level up
+6 HP +3MP +4 Base Damage before multiplier (give or take 1 or 2 digits)
Put a point in attributes, STR add's another 4 to physical base, magic adds 4 to magic, END adds 6 more to HP and -2 to physical damage dealt to you, magic is +3MP and -2 Magic damage, Speed vs Speed decides hitrate before skill accuracy is decided which is why in previous games speed is a god stat or Luck for a better crit rate which with press turn is a big deal.
All these stats are out of 40, in magic and physical damage through stats alone increases the base by 160 and the levels to get there would add another 160, seeing a stat you're specing in grow by a nice 8 damage each level in a game where attacks are based on skills acting as semi multipliers so +8 means a skill could be around +10 to +38 to your damage depending on the potency of the skill.
Now how does this effect the technical aspect of the combat? All demons you encounter outside of bosses in the game follow the exact same rules, they'll be semi spec'd in the same stat so bulky looking demons will clearly have a good STR, END with drops in Luck and Speed and level they'll do exactly what your MC does with the only differences being the demons base HP and MP can be different for variety. so if you stay the same level as the encounters you'll find fights encounters are doing roughly equal DPS to you which is why early game in SMT games are considered harder because it takes less DPS a turn to die.
Buffs and Debuffs are also fucking strong in these games, +1 speed with even 5 Speed stat difference is massive

Now for SMT4 and 4F there is no HP or MP changing stat, you by default just have perfect HP and MP which no other demon will get (outside of bosses where they'll clearly be better) This also means no stat outside of magic to change base damage.
Stats go up to 200-999 (no demon outside of you leveling them will be past 200 but you can be past that)
Pretty much all stats involve simply doing more damage because SMT4 is simply DPS war where you get beyond perfect.
you get 5 stat points per level
STR - Base damage (worthless since your Godly MP and mass of Chakra drops from random encounters will make you never need the base attack, also guns ignore it so just buy better guns to carry your shit STR)
DEX - Skill Damage (A God stat you can by 300 which is end game levels simply with no charge or buffs go in for 2000 damage like it's nothing from basic and easily acquirable skills)
Magic - Magic Damage (Alternative god stat if you want to abuse that MP for getting them press turn advantages or spam that one spell end game that also debuffs all stats)
Speed - Accuracy (just put 1 in it every level to be on track)
Luck - Crit chance
So here you dump souly into stats that make your numbers bigger with nothing you or they have to make them lower.
All skills in this game are MP costing, this in SMT SJ was to balance how damn strong physical skills are since you had such skills as hit 2-4 times for heavy damage so demons that would use them with good STR would have a low MP yield, but what was that, you have a perfect MP yield, so the limits a demon would have with these skills you do not, you can shit out high level physical skills and pump 4 into dex each level and 1 into Speed and always match demons of equal levels speed but always be 20-90+ higher in DEX (the no matter what by even early levels, hell by 50 Speed just start going into luck and you'll never have much a problem since speed was majorly nerfed to remove a major part of the specing aspect where of course you wanted that damage but you eventually needed to know when you needed END or SPEED, even demons who are meant to be spec'd in physical have points dump'd into magic when it benefits them zero and they'll have like 100 MP end game when you have 400.
Buffs and Debuffs in this game are also worthless, by max debuff you're pretty much done what a single would have done in the previous games and vise versa for buffs, they're like expensive wastes of a turn now, pretty much skills like luster candy and that almighty mass debuff skill went from busted to the only viable way to get either buffs or debuffs without wasting time spent on DPS.
If you ever use tarukaja or the like you've wasted a press turn.
Skills in this game have larger power gaps making the damage you get from them larger making triple sure your DPS will out anything by just dumping without care.

TL:DR
Old SMT: stats mattered as you had to spec carefully as demons of the same level could have the potential to at the same level have the exact same stats and play the buff/debuff tennis game
New SMT: Your character is made perfect by default and only dumping into 2 stats > then anything any demon will come at you with and the gap between you and the game widens massively over the course of the game and all sorts of buff/debuff game is wasted on spamming high level ones end game exclusively..

your stats can go higher then 40 in nocturne since the level cap is 255

smirk has been nerfed so it doesnt give you the insane dodge rate when you have it and can be taken off if an enemy puts on aliment on you. there is nothing wrong with attacks having special effects wile smirking since they nerfed antitictohn and salvation to only have effect during smirk. smile charge is expensive as hell and with smirk not being as strong as it was makes it ok. guns are not really effective against yhvh and only his first form has a damage gate and its not really a real fight but his second form is

Its been 6 years since Trama Center: New Blood. They pretty much perfected the genre with that game and they haven't made a new game sense. Trauma Team was too different for my tastes.

Also, now that Atlus has more money they could actually get the game on other platforms. Motion controls were a stupid gimmick but a necessary given the type of game New Blood is, a surreal simulation. Just imagine how much more in depth the game could be with a mouse, or even something like the touch pad on the PS4 controller. But I would much rather prefer a mouse.

No because in other games buffs and debuffs are that much more powerful you're actually getting output from the turn spent.
1 debuff in SMT4 requires 11+ attacks of non reset attacks from the caster before you see the output while in any other the 30% which is -3 would be your -1 stat state in other games. making the output come out much faster to justify using them and justify caring if you're debuffed.

akasha arts yes, riot gun no. people dont do dex builds and akasha arts is the highest damage skill in the game.

Difficulty Enhancements:

After the earliest areas of the game, new and powerful enemies will show up during full Kagutsuchi
Enemy encounter sets have been enhanced
Enemy scripts have been enhanced
Boss scripts have been selectively altered, and their stats have been increased substantially
The HP of random encounter enemies scales up more over the course of the game
New maximum of 2 -Kaja stacks on the player and 2 -Kunda stacks on enemies
Trafuri is removed
Tetra/Makarakarn now only affect the caster
Estoma’s effectiveness is reduced (until you get Masakados)
Mitama stat bonus cap lowered from +100% to +25% of base stats

Balance Changes:

Physical skills have been improved in the early and mid-game
Magic skills have been improved in the late-game (and magic damage no longer caps)
Pierce now also penetrates Resist/Null for magic skills
HP-based skills now use strength for damage, and their damage output ranges from 60%-100% of normal based on your current HP% (the power of these skills was raised a bit to compensate for this)
Agility and Luck now have much higher impact on the things they effect
Luck now affects the rate of ailments and instant death

Luck is now the primary factor in magic accuracy (yes, Luck did almost nothing in the original game…)
Dark/Bright Might crit rate reduced to 50%

Only issue is the 2 Kaja/Kunda, but other then that, it's like a more polished version overall, looking forward to trying it.

I think the X axis refers to the art style exclusively, not the gameplay. FF usually strives to make their characters look like humans with little or no exaggeration, whereas Dragon Quest models try and match Toriyama's style. That's why Yakuza is on the "Realistic" side despite being all over the place thematically.

On the topic of the older (famicom) games, there's something that irks me about them. Outside of the very early game where you're fighting for your life walking from healing spot to healing spot and need all the damage you can get, the damage the MC can do really tapers off, and he becomes a tanky (albeit very good at tanking) item dispencer.
Physical skills don't do that much more damage than regular attacks, and again, outside of the early game, where 2nd tier spells shit fury all over enemies, spells also really taper off, so fights mostly consist of using beefy demons and a dedicated healer/buffer and spamming attack.
Every boss that matters is also immune to guns, so the only way you can deal decent damage is if you get the super sekrit endgame sword that hits like 8 times in one turn.

What did this guy do? Take the skills that were from Digital Devil Saga and transferred them over to Nocturne?

Most of the skills and items added are from SJ, there are other neat things like demons all having long skill lists to learn, when looking at and attack if it gives you values and accuracy.

Demons in SMT usually have set animations for skills so they'll look like those and for magic he probobly recycled spells animations on top of the new moves.

Imagine was probably the comfiest game I've ever played. It perfectly adapted the look, sound and feel of core SMT into an open-world MMO. I hope they attempt something like it again someday.
