Wouldn’t ramming the iceberg head on reduce the damage to the bow portion of the ship? The reason the ship sank was because they tried to avoid it and ended up with a long gash in the hull that was too long for them to be able to seal off the bulkheads, since water flooded in past the safe number of bulkheads needed to keep her afloat.

If they had managed to focus all damage to the bow of the ship, they could have sealed off the bulkheads effectively, and stayed afloat, with only a minimal loss of life – the workers below and close to the bow/the part that would hit the iceberg and be flooded.

Look at the 1956 photo of the MS Stockholm. She sustained massive damage to the bow in a collision with another ship, but managed to stay afloat, and after repairs returned to service.

After a collision with a another boat in 1911, the Olympic was in very bad shape. They threw some cheap metal on the side and changed her name to the Titanic while the actually ship was being built next door. The company was in massive debt so they upped the insurance on the "titanic" and crashed her. They even warned Rockefeller about the accident, which is why he left early on the voyage.
Now with plenty of insurance money, they payed of the details of building the new ship and called her the Olympic to fool everyone.
