What's the one autistic mechanic you'd like to put into a fighting game if you were in charge of designing and balancing it?

I recently thought about the way fighting games handle time, and it occurred to me that many games let you slow down, stop, or accelerate time, but none of them let you reverse it. I think it'd be neat if one of your universal defensive options was to rewind the opponent half a second, or a second - perhaps there could be different options which scale with meter spent. I'm not sure what kind of state it'd put you into (neutral? automatic counterhit?), or whether it should be something you'd have easy access to (EX meter, tension meter, etc.) or more similar to a burst meter, but I felt the idea had merit.

Assists were just removed because it didn't make sense for your teammate to just hop in for only one attack and made some characters be used for their assist only, so now it's SFxT style quick-tagging instead.

Swamp Thing is too direct. He grabs and punches too much. Tron is indeed a better example. When you fight her in Arkham Asylum, you in fact fight her plants, and she is the weak spot. Something like that would be preferable.

SF5 is the main one I'm going for sadly, but they play SF3/KoF/GG as well plus a random old game. It's monthly and you get points based on where you place. After 12 months the top 10 get seeded based on points for a big tournament. Winner gets a large cash prize and a trip to Evo next year. It's double elimination and basically mirror's evo rules.

I would say that tournaments have one good thing: you can play with people directly. No lags, no connection lost, no talking shit without the risk of getting punched. Online nowadays is killing most games in the scene because it is usually hard to get it good enough. So hard that even big companies have major problems with it. Oh, and big tournaments are also not good in the long run, because of money prizes. The only thing keeping people from abandoning SFV and get into other games is the tournament money. To me, online and money based tournaments have been the biggest problem of the genre.

This is a noobish question, but how easy is it to transition from game to game (Barring the obvious outliers like Smash and NetherRealm games)?

There are a number of 2D fighters I have on my computer that I would like to play, but, given that I'm out of the house often, I'm unable to play them as much as I like. However, I do have a 3DS and a copy of BB:CS2 (And Smash too). How difficult would it be to transition what I've learned in CS2 to other fighting games?

I used to do that but I stopped, I didn't see too much point in typing out the changes, if anyone likes that kinda thing I can start doing that again.
I was just grouping the people that like the game together is all, meant nothing of it, if you get enjoyment out of a game in one way than the other there's no problem, the game's doing it's job of giving you entertainment, personally I can't stand it though, the tiniest bit of latency fucks me over.

it depends on a lot of things.
I have a friend who was Melee only and I showed him the ropes in a few other games, now he's pretty good at soul caliber 2, Tekken and Chaos Code and decent at Nitroplus and Skullgirls.
but that was due to me showing him the basics,
regardless of getting help or having a scene or not it always comes down do time, you put enough time into something you'll get the hang of it.
be sure to watch tutorials if there are any and try to find recorded matches on youtube to see what they're doing and see if you can manage that.
other anime fighters (and maybe Injustice) will feel pretty natural, more traditional 2D and 3D fighters may take a bit of extra time.

Had this game. Played it all the time.
In hindsight it's pretty darn terrible, especially balancewise (every character has at least 20 special moves and archetypes are non-existant) but it did have some interesting ideas and a shitload of game modes. It also had a remarkably punishing arcade mode with limited continues, being tossed back when losing and a final boss that makes Omega Rugal look fair and balanced.

Adding the rest of those characters would literally scream "disc-locked characters" knowing most of them were playable with hacks (Bo Rai Cho would technically count as a disc-locked character). The game is already shitty and sleazy with Goro, Shinnock, and Bo being disc-locked, sjw-pandering, and microtransactions. We don't need another thing to make this game even shittier than it's current state.

I've heard people joke about '09ers, but being a '17er myself, it can be a bit discouraging to hear people talk about years' worth of experience in games I'll never play in a single breath (when people say "arcade" I think of Virtua Cop and ski-ball). I was catching up on Final Round coverage for GGXrd, and the commentators mentioned what playing "old Guilty Gear" was like and, fuck, dude, I'm not used to completely lacking a frame of reference like this.

I know I shouldn't let other people's experience bother me, but it's human nature to assume other people are like oneself. I get the impression many people here are older, though.

I've been kinda seriously playing since '00, when an arcade opened in our town. I have had a PS1 for about 2 years before that with Tekken 3 and KoF '98, but the only things me and my brother did on those was mash with no real thought put into actually playing the games. I played quite a few games in the arcades, but I put most effort into Tekken games, KoF and VF 4: Evolution because I had them at home so I could practice before I hit the arcade.
Also, when it comes to experiences of arcades, it differs depending on where you live, for example there was no gang-related shit here in Eastern Europe because we don't have niggers, but there are some common things everyone who is a bit older shares, no matter where they live, such as arcades giving you lung cancer from all the cigarette smoke, if a new machine was put, you could only know where it is by following the strange unfamiliar noise. You were also forced not to play TOO well or shit talk too much if you don't want the other guy to call his cousins over so they all can beat your ass.
But it really shouldn't bother you, I know a lot of people quite a bit younger than me who just started playing a few years ago and they do really well, knowing the differences between older games in the series and the new one really doesn't help you that much unless you play both.

Sol and Ky's in X-X2 were pretty lame, along with Anji's, as the other guy said.

Chipp's Xrd IK reminds me of Xrd's character themes, in that I would have rather just gotten a remastered Delta End instead of the not-bad but forgettable IK he got.

EC:CFTDS had a ton of ideas but it was maybe too 90's. Even making a mechanic so you couldn't "Spam" turned out to be interesting. Nowhere near as good as Weaponlord (Watch the side tourney of that from KI:WC. DJames does commentary and it's amazing how much depth that game had for a 90's game) but it was serviceable, even fun, though CFTDS had to really go into hyper violence to try sell it instead of iterating on what interesting concepts they had. And then Sega canned their funding for a Saturn game because of Virtua Fighter.

It would be an interesting KS but fighters don't really sell on violence any more. MK X is plenty brutal but even NRS are selling it on "Easy to pick up, hard to master and tons of shit to do" instead of "OH SHIT ERMAC PULLED THEIR GUTS OUT OF THEIR MOUTH".


'09er and '16er are really just catch all terms for the people who joined the scene when SF IV and SF V came out and then tried to act like they knew everything about the games and fighting games in general immediately (Usually flowchart Ken players) and didn't know about the "dark ages" even though Tekken, Soul Calibur and MK still sold really well in that period.

You shouldn't really take it as an insult. Some of the old talk is America focused (West coast vs East Coast, gang shit and dealing) and there are universal constants (That faggot who cried when you threw them, "Spammed" specials and had their cousins ready to beat your ass and steal your money if you won). Arcades were a special time with good memories but there was a ton of bad shit as well and most players from back then would say that now is better (Except Watson but Watson will always be Watson). It's just stories, really.

Everyone new is welcome here and around the FGC and no one is going to call you a 17'er just because you weren't around back then. Asking questions is good and no one reasonable holds it against you that you came in now.

15er here. I decided to try fighting games after Ryu was revealed in Sm4sh, and realizing that fighting games aren't as hard to learn as everyone said they were. Can't believe Ryu is considered Sm4sh's most complicated character.

Word from a man that's a terrible player for 20 years: Dedication pays, but you will always find people that is just better. They might not even practice as much as you do, but are just better. Get used to it and get ready for it. And if you can, always try older games. Try the games is important. Take some time and go for the older titles. And play with people offline as much as possible. This is how these games are supposed to be enjoyed.

VF also did really well in that period with Evolution, which saw a lot of success and popularity even outside of Japan.

Going by Yamazaki's trailer, I think the DLC characters will only interact with themselves during arcade mode and maybe will have special winquotes against the regular cast but they do anything against the new guys because that would imply hiring the VAs again just for a few lines. At least looks like we'll get the chance to face the DLC characters some way. Maybe the composition of the teams will be random like you can face K/Maxima/Kula or K/Maxima/Whip or Ralf/Clark/Whip, Geese/Billy/Yamazaki and so on.

Skullgirls did it right and have regular online tournaments. I heard KI also has netcode good enough for people to just regularly play online. The companies usually don't care because Japan is a small somewhat closed country or only care about the initial sales. I did enter in some fightcade tournaments. Some people simply doesn't have a scene around them and have to rely on online interactions. I'm not saying the random "ranked" matches were people battle for imaginary points and talk shit one to another without ever making progress or even having fun. But discord channels, forums and even here can be a way to people enjoy playing their favorite fighting game.


My first one was Mortal Kombat back in 1994 but I only got to "serious play" around '98 in KOF because I didn't want to lose my lunch money at the arcades. But yeah, I grew up in the arcades with Capcom, Mortal Kombat and SNK titles (mainly, UMK3, Marvel vs series, CvS, KOF and SamSho) and at home with Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter. Only got to know animefighters around 2009 with Blazblue and then some other titles like AH3. And even after all these years, I can't call myselft "good" have benn at many local tournaments in my life, did well in some, did bad in others but so is life. But yeah, just like the other user said everyone is welcome and if you have questions, we can try to help. If you want to share new stuff, please do.

1992 but when the arcades died in my local area around 2001 I left the scene for many years. Lots of 09ers and kids are better at modern /fightan/ than I'll probably ever be due to lack of time to play. But those same people can never hope to hang with me in old /fightan/ like MK3 or SF2, probably because those games are dead and they never play them.

Don't worry too much about begin new to /fightan/. Most people that cling on to the old days were never any good or are now washed up. That's why they commentate instead of participating or they enter a tournament just to get 0-2ed. Old players that are good are the minority.

Just to add to this the growing old thing limits you a lot in some respects. My reaction time has gone down compared to even 5 years ago. I've had to re-think the way I play most multiplayer games (mainly /fightan/ and FPS). My play style has changed from a reaction based one to planning and keeping myself out of situations where I have to react in a split second. I could mitigate these problems through the use of speed/amps/drugs but those take such at toll on my body and typically have me thinking too fast. So I've just adjusted and learned to play around my limitations. In addition to reaction time begin an issue my wrists/hands are going south at an alarming rate. This was the main reason I switched back to the stick because it hurts less than using a pad and my right hand doesn't go numb as quickly.

OK, one more stuff from TRAF. They are showing the extra characters that will be selected by the backers if the get the goals.
Some look quite interesting.

Doing SF motions changes some of the attacks properties (Hadouken gains more range with QCF motion and it gains a second hit with HCF, Shoryuken gains super armor and increase knockback with DP and Tatsu gains range and damage with QCB). Also, his Tilts (weak moves) also change based in if you press or hold the A button, making the Weak/Medium/Heavy/Special ladder of 4 buttons fightans instead of the Weak/Strong/Special that is Smash 4.

It is true that shit gets cut but you look at things like shovel knight and skullgirls and see them still adding in content years later. This is also a kickstarter game so telling people who funded you "nope can't do it" when it is clearly within your ability screams bullshit. They shouldn't give a character contest decision, it's always more disappointment, what-could-have-been than success when looking back on it.


Any reason a director gives for a character not being in a roster is bullshit, it's always "cause I don't wanna".

I don't remember what happened well enough. What did they promised to deliver with Eliza, but failed? I do remember they wanted a character that had rewind powers midfight. I think it was Aeon.

The rewinding character was Isaac. As for Eliza, they were going to have blood effects that would be triggered upon her getting hit, MK style, that would persist on the ground that she could then use for her attacks, similar to Carmine from UNIEL. Then they turned around after the crowdfunding was over and said they couldn't do it because lolESRB, and did something else entirely.

The better part of a year after the game's release. I would have preferred the clone characters be alternate costumes as well, but I want that because it muddies the waters as to what future characters will be, and what being "represented" means. I'd love for Daisy to be nothing more than an alt costume for Peach, but there's no way she'll be added to tr4sh like that, since they only update the game with full characters and mii costumes.

As much as I'm disappointed by Beowulf and Eliza not being what she's supposed to be, I'm glad we didn't get Stanley.

For input motions, it's just him. Bayonetta had a similar input gimmick where she could hold down her A-button attacks and aerials to shoot afterwards, but it's pretty useless since the bullets don't do any hitstun and inflict only a few % damage. That one illustration is a very old sketch before Kike Z was even involved. They didn't do any concept work for her during the campaign.

The only other official illustration was the IGG which had everybody in the same stock standing position. And the postcards that Alex Ahad has done which aren't strictly speaking gameplay related.

I think the problem with these two IGG characters with that Mike didn't know how to focus their designs. Eliza started off on One path and then went along to other design roof before they settled on giving her an underdeveloped sekhmet and some Parasoul level of normals. Beowulf was just a "fuck it" moment and he gave him a little bit of everything.

If they can just give him the same amount of time that they gave him to design the original roster the new characters can be fine I still have a little faith in the company

I play story mode exactly once for every character and never touch them again. I have always been more interested in having mechanically interesting character is within Skullgirls and I hated the waifu Wars because people only wanted their shifty ass Story characters. And not even the story characters we need to get a cannon story mode.

It is one of the problems of having a character vote you sacrifice your vision for whatever will help you get money and it reflects in the product. Two characters that don't feel as good as the rest and rushed because of deadlines.

The art style reminds me of when I first saw footage of Xrd Sign and couldn't tell if it was using sprites or 3D models. Looks cool, although the UI is a bit too minimalist and small for my tastes.

In fact, when the game launched, Tanya, Rain, Baraka and Sindel were really incomplete. plenty of stuff missing, no variations. Bo'Rai Cho was never in the game, only in video cutscenes, just like Li Mei, Sareena and Frost.
Shinnok was unlocked as you finished Story mode, as pointed out. Frankly, I do believe they will try to do something after Injustice 2 is released and EVO is over. The sad part is the fact that Nether is now a slave owned by WB Games. And that means no free DLC ever.

I can vouch for that, IIRC you could mod the game and play as them but they had like half of the moves of actual characters, and most(maybe all? I don't remember) of their moves were direct port from MK9. Also I still hate Ed Boon for putting movie characters instead of characters like Frost, Sareena and Fujin

If you see the old version, the blood is very simple to see because it is the "impact point" of the scene. Not? It's showing how she cuts the house and the bloc, and the screen, or whatever.

You could buy Shinnock's unlock via microtransaction. Therefore, he's technically disc-locked like the rest of the characters. Tanya and Bo would be technical disc-locked characters too, only they were incomplete (Bo kind of counts due to his model even if he has no files).

Can someone tell me how good King of Fighters XIV is, especially to newcomers? If you're already getting a PS4 for other games, you can download the Demo ver2 and try for yourself. It doesn't have an in depth tutorial like Skullgirls, Blazblue or Xrd but you can easily find stuff online or just asking here. The basics follow the same as other KOF games so the guides at OP works just fine.

I myself like it better than XIII without the jumpfest and OHK at high level matches with better neutral and easier inputs. Liked most of the new characters and almost all of my mains returned (or even added like Nakoruru). But my favorite will always be '98(UMFE). If only the characters without many combo options like Chang could hit as hard as he could in '98 it would be a candidate as for favorite KOF game ever.

Whatever stick you get user you'll enjoy it. Just don't cheap out because you're just going to wonder what-if or want something better. I have a Qanba Q4 that's been good to me, paired it with a Xbox 360 -> PS4 brooks so I can play KoF14/SF5 on console. All in I spent about $170. I really like the stick but I'm wanting to put in the universal board now. I looked up how to do it for my stick and I'd basically be cutting out everything but the stick/buttons. I don't really want to ruin a perfectly good stick like that.

I'm just going to end up building one custom sometime soon. You'll probably be in the same place after you get yours. It took me a year and a half to get to that point. Don't over look some of the older stuff that doesn't have native support for Xbone/PS4. There are some good deals on older sticks right now if you're willing to part with $30 for a converter. It adds a bit of input lag but I can't tell and neither can anyone else I've talked to.

Oh one last thing if you're using Windows as your OS and gaming on PC consider something with xinput support. I have less headaches with it than I do dinput. SF5 is the main offender (or at least it was, it finally got support).

Oh and I just saw your post about the octogate. Just order one for whatever stick you get from somewhere like focus attack. It'll run you like $1-$2 for the extra gates. I suggest getting something that is square though and using that. I switched to the octogate for awhile and it was making it hard to do certain things. You always end up riding the gate for fireballs. The square took some getting used to since I grew up with American battops/gates but using it for a solid year is paying off. When I went back to it after 2 months it was like I took off the training wheels.

Just get all of them though and use what feels best to you. Try the circle gate while you're at it might be your things. Spare gates/buttons/other parts costs next to nothing so don't fear experimenting. Just make sure you get something with common parts that are easy to swap.

Why are people so fixated on getting on a fightstick when pad players have won some of the biggest tournaments enough times that it clearly doesn't make a difference… unless it's a capcom game with abusable inputs buffers that they can't fix and call it a feature instead of a bug.

Depending on the game I might pick up the pad instead of the stick. I just like the stick because that's the way I grew up playing most of these games and it feels natural to me. The stick does make a lot of things easier. The hitbox does too.

Habit. I basically lived as a kid at a fish and chip shop mashing buttons on the old arcade cabinets, especially the SF2 stand-ups. And for quarter circle motions and the like, rolling the thumb feels a lot more uncomfortable and unnatural than a flick of the wrist on a nice stick. :^)

It can be more comfortable in some instances. I play anime games on stick but SF on pad.

Speaking of sticks, I have the opportunity to buy a Mad Catz TES Plus (pic related) for $140 Canuck bucks flat. From what I can tell, it's a good stick with minimal input lag and a comfortable button layout, and is compatible with both PS3 and PS4, which is all I'd ever need it to be. The seller says it's never left the box.

Can anyone speak to the quality of this stick? It seems like a good deal, but I don't want to be suckered into anything.

Actually, Snake Eyez regularly uses pad (and so do a lot of grappler players) and regularly dominates with them.

TBH, KOF XI destroys that theory that Rock is a child in KoF. B. Jenet was 19 in Garou, but she is on XI, and you also have Terry and Tizoc in their Garou styles. Rock could be in any KoF since XI and it would be on right. Hell, Maximum Impact happens "one year later" XI, and you do have Rock playable. I doubt it will be him, but it would be 100% OK.

I dunno. That seems like a very distinguishable lean. :^)

Indeed, but KOF XI is canon. So we know KoF XI is supposed to happen before XIV. Of course the ending of XIII mixed up e a lot of things, but, we know it happens after the fall of NESTS, and after the death of Ash, so, it have to be after XI and XIII. Geese being alive have little impact.
Anyways, it is funny to see how SNK manage to fuck up a lore that was going pretty well until XI.

Is someone able to comprehensively explain why 3rd Strike is more fun than SFV and what SFV does wrong?

first off hitboxes are the main issue and one that everybody has a problem with.
second is how playing the game is like rolling dice because of the lack of tools to give skillful players actual skill. This leads to pros losing to new players because they guessed right multiple times because the game allows itself to boil down to guesses and "reads".
So if you hate tech skill and don't mind doing useless footsies for 50 seconds, then its your game. If you want more movements options, technical aspects and just all around more VARIABLES to be accounted for in the game, then look towards other fighters.
And always know that there tends to be more to a fighter then you initially notice, except for sfv, it's plain as day..

While it's true that SNK can just toss Rock in the game and call a day and both Jenet and Hotaru makes an appearance during the Women Fighters ending,

I think you may be right at asking for more skill based game but skill must come of the correct use of the tools a character has to deal with attack and defense, not from rewards from practicing frame perfect combos that isn't a real skill

SFV footsies are bad because raw footsies do no damage, what you need is forced high damage mixup situations. Which is not footsies. Every character that people hate, including the high tiers people don't hate as much embody this problem to the fullest extent.

As for what made 3S good, you'd have to ask someone more experienced. I know the parry system was more dynamic due to it being a very tight, calculated risk with zero defence, and I know it allowed a lot of otherwise mediocre characters to be played at higher levels since it could theoretically invalidate any move. Seeing someone parry a full super never gets old.

I mean 3S had Chun, Yun, Ken and then everyone else was more or less why bother. It was more just a very solid game that parry added hype too. Unlike danger time and Tekken 7's slow-mo which are hype over gameplay parry is hype through gameplay

I'm considering buying KOF98 on Switch because apparently the port is really well done. Yeah yeah, paying for ROMs, but the convenience of having it on the go would be worth it.
Thing is, I've never been in to KOF before. Is 98 a good place to start. What do I need to know going in? I remember something about specific SNK "shortcuts" that making certain command inputs easier (quarter circle back, quarter circle forward, which replaces half circle back, half circle forward, or something?).

Yes. It's more neutral based with slower gameplay than 2002, XI or XIII but faster than XIV. But the inputs are a bit more strict than the KOF games that came after the bankrupt with XIII and XIV being the most lenient ones.

Is there any plans for a joycon that has an actual dpad? At least a 3rd party one like Hori or other company. I'm waiting for the Switch to fix the 1st shippment problems to get one and also interested to have '98, Pocket Rumble along with other games like Zelda and Bloodstained.

I don't have a problem with the health bars or meter. I like them to be in one place instead of at the top and bottom of the screen like most games. Still, it has things like holding for a few frames the start button to pause, P2 able to choose something after the match, button configuration during every step of character selection, option choose your character or have a shortcut to a preset choices among other stuff that some recent fighting games don't have. Never played Revelator but SIGN tutorial is not really that good and only learned the characters playing their challenges. BlazblueCP did a better job making "more personal" with the characters dialogs and explanations.

Revelator has an amazing tutorial. I walked in not knowing anything about fighting games and by the end I was doing 8-hit RRC combos, I understood how to block and airdash, and a bunch of other stuff. Say what you will about Xrd being lenient with its inputs and gatling combos, but the basic tutorial is an amazing resource for someone new to the scene, or new to GG. *Or so I'd imagine, anyway.**

Mission Mode is even better because it literally teaches you intermediate techniques like feinting, predicting opponents' jumps, hit confirms, and proper poking. By the end, you learn how to jump install and combo into IKs.
