I'm getting comfy with the idea of building a new PC, but the issue is how do I install a copy of Windows 10 without getting jewed horribly? MS don't care about the loopholes I'm sure because as long as 90% of audience is under their spying they won't care, so how exactly do you go about avoiding it for good? Is there a custom version of Windows 10 that removes all the shit completely and forever? Also interested in whether you need a legit copy to purchase games from their store, which would be a shame. Just want to try Gears 4 on PC. You're all going to upgrade eventually but I must ask about how best to go about it from some goys who might know.

I have 0 issues on a daily basis, I've only had to install a virtual machine once to run an old game from the DOS era cause it required an early Windows version, and aside from that, Windows 10 gaming isn't bad at all. I have an 8-core CPU, and a video card that's only 1 generation behind the current. If someone's watching what I do, chances are more than likely they already know what's on my hard drive just from having watched me download those things. I'm not naive enough to believe that everything I do is untraceable and that we as leajun are such untraceable anonymous badasses.

If you've replaced a hard drive in the last 10 years, and you didn't replace most of what's on that hard drive with flash storage from other computes, anyone who cares already knows what's on your computer, whether you're using Linux or Windows. There's a common misconception where a VPN will make everything you do invisible, but that's not true, that only applies if someone's not watching you already. If someone's watching you, your VPN doesn't really do anything because when the data exits the tunnel to go onto your computer, it's still intercepted. That's the folly of the internet, you're always connected to at least one node unobfuscated. And that ONE NODE is enough where if someone's looking to watch you, they already know.

I've already pointed out that if they want shit on you, they can get it by monitoring your connection at the first node. But apparently you didn't read the thread. I can tell you volumes about ways to watch people online, they don't need to even make contact with your computer to figure out where the fuck you go, once they figure out where your computer connects to the internet they can watch the entry node all day. If you have a game console, they are tracking you. And even breaking the fact that they're tracking you down into metadata doesn't change the fact that there's still an overwhelming amount of data. Unless you give them a reason to look into you, like committing a cyber crime, they will probably never get around to looking your way because they're too busy looking at jailbait and kiddy porn. I didn't say that turning off updates fixes it. I said I turn off updates so that they can't render software to stop working. They've turned on updates a couple of times, and I ended up writing a program to watch Windows Update and turn it off in the eventuality that it might turn itself back on. I'm sorry but I gotta agree with the OP. Eventually you will have no choice but to change to Win10. Vista and XP got retired and games don't support them anymore. How long until games will no longer support Win7/8.1? Microsoft wants to unify all Windows users under one OS because they want to run a new business model with updates as a service, like Apple does. They're doing everything in their power to coerce people to move to Windows 10 as a result. Soon a new dot net will come out and it won't support win7/8… But the thing is, Win8.1 only has support until January 2018. So them disabling updates on those processor families (which they told us they'd do over a year ago) is just them actually following up on what they said they would do.
Whether it's today, 3 years from now, or even 10 years from now, if you expect to continue enjoying games on Windows (as Linux has an indisputably smaller install base to go by in that department), you're going to have to update eventually. Either that or go to Linux. And Vault 7 shows that Linux isn't a perfect solution either.
If you're on Windows 7, you should get it over with and make a decision now, move to Win10 or move to Linux. I've tried Linux more than a dozen times, and I always end up coming back to Windows. Their implementation of virtually every feature is just shit on Linux, if they offered the same level of quality and the same level of functionality as Windows, I'd switch over to Linux in a minute. But they don't have the quality or the features. Which is a shame, because Linux provides a good boost in performance for a lot of games.

There's no harm in dragging your feet with Windows 7 and 8. Remember that XP was granted multiple new leases on life because companies (and to a large extent consumers) just wouldn't fucking switch. I've heard the story about Microsoft refusing to support older versions on Windows on newer processors, but I have difficulty understanding what that even means. A processor executes instructions, and unless AMD and Intel both decide to abandon x86 for whatever reason, Windows will continue to run on new processors without issue. Because of that I think the likelihood of Windows 7 being a viable option into the near-medium future is very high.
As for Linux, I've used it for years, so it's gotten to the point that it's Windows that feels hacky and unpolished. What were you having issues with?

How long do you guys windows 7 will remain relevant? If I think about xp it stayed relevant (a ton of people used it) even in 2010, so that was a lifespan of like a decade. And a decade has passed since Windows 7, how many years do you think we can drag W7 on? I'd personally prefer forever because I simply think this is the best windows OS and all the upgrades from now on should be done on the hardware side instead until they come up with a really polished OS. Big thing I've had huge issues with is multi-monitor support. Linux doesn't want to recognize that my primary monitor is the 1080p monitor, not the 1280x1024 monitor. Had absolutely horrid issues trying to get that to recognize the right primary monitor, but it would always open games on the wrong monitor.
Then there's 64-bit support, I have an AMD processor and I downloaded a 64-bit installation disc, but for some reason all the distros I tried were like "this looks like 32-bit to me!" and installed 32-bit without giving me any kind of input to tell it otherwise. Which of course limited my 16gb of RAM to 4gb.
I installed Ukuntu on my father's computer, and it would not accept his onboard graphics processor, the only way I could get it to not just spontaneously crash every 3 minutes was to run it with no graphics driver at all (which limits resolution to 1024x768, or maybe it was 800x600, can't quite remember)… Which doesn't work on an OS where every fucking Window seems to expect you're running 720p.
For years I had issues with the wifi component of Linux, now they install that shit standard so you don't have to fuck with installing certain packages from a third-party source (the irony if you don't have a wired connection).
Simplified operation of the OS, like being able to hit the Windows key to bring up the system menu on a keyboard, instead the Mouse is mandatory for pretty much everything.
There's STILL things on Linux which require you to open a terminal and shut down your desktop environment to initialize certain things, and then restart the desktop environment…
And then there's support for dev tools. It used to be simple to install the GC++ compiler and it would install just about everything I would ever need… Although the IDEs don't have useful features like Intellisynch or some contemporary similar features.
Linux has drivers that support NTFS, but Windows does not have drivers that support any of the Linux partition systems. I used to run a dual boot system back in 2008, but I just don't want to deal with Linux's shortcomings again.

I suspect that Windows 7 will be a new XP in terms of forcing Microsoft to continue support. If worst comes to worst, you can always use 8.1, which can be forced into the mold of a slightly flatter 7. In the meantime, both Linux and ReactOS/Wine are being continuously improved.
It's telling that I read that and thought, Oh, you just set your 1080p monitor as Primary in xorg.conf. Linux has definitely gotten more just-werks since 2008, so I doubt you'd have that issue with a proper DE, but that should show you how far I am into the autism.
I have to countersignal you on the terminal thing, though. Linux still makes a token effort to adhere to Unix principles, which means command-line supremacy. If you're uncomfortable using the terminal for basic things like installing packages, you're just not going to feel at home in Linux. I don't know if that's a shortcoming of the OS as opposed to a basic design difference.

Don't take this pesonally. I find this to be a non-OS issue with Linux. People on Linux just assume they know the answer, and that because you don't use Linux primarily that you're a hick who can't figure out how to use a computer. Like you, I have the ability to duckduckgo any information that I need to try and debug these things. I've been through hundreds of threads for various issues that popped up on Linux. When I build my next PC, I'll be running a Linux box on this machine, and a Windows box on the other machine. Although at that time, the monitor thing will no longer be an issue.

Nah, I understand. The thing that kind of frustrates me is that I probably would know the answer if I had been sitting down at your computer, or at least I'd have known exactly what to search for. That doesn't make you a moron, I've just invested a lot of time into this shit. One advantage that Windows has over Linux is that it's uniform, and therefore it's incredibly easy to troubleshoot simple problems remotely. I don't think Linux people are (for the most part) assholes or elitists, they're just faced with that problem and eventually end up dismissing people who need help with "go read man until you understand what's going on."
I think an intrepid person could make some shekels with a Linux support service.

It will remain relevant as long as devs don't purposely go out of their way to fuck with Win 7 users, which is very likely to happen (such as Intel's Kaby Lake and AMD's Ryzen not being officially supported on Win 7/8.1).
DX 12 can only get ahead if Microsoft bribes devs/publishers to make their games exclusively work on it. But that would be a shot in the foot, considering that Vulkan API can work anywhere and publishers are more concerned with releasing their games on multiple platforms, you would have to spend extra time developing for DX12 only to work in W10 and XOne.

This right here. I only ran 10 for a couple months for purposes of evaluating it and it does not play well with hardware. Hell the sound driver support is abysmal and leaves your microphone with an incessant white noise input. Just stick with 7, it is genuinely more stable and provides leagues more control over itself than 10.

Ryzen is only good if you have a lot of fast RAM. 16GB+ of DDR4 @ 3,200MHz. Then it's a lot cheaper for better performance and squished Intel's price for performance at that tier. It's all up to you what you want to get but don't get an i7 if you aren't doing 3D rendering or editing videos.

Decent number of games have been ported on steam and have workarounds with WINE but still hit and miss as many titles don't work well with WINE.
Currently using KVM+QEMU to passthrough my dedicated GPU on a wangblows guest for all my gaymen needs whilst host runs on integrated GPU. So I don't have to restart for dual boot just run windows VM like it were any other software application. Too bad I couldn't figure out how to rebind my dGPU back to host.
Hell even my HTC Vive works surprisingly well, was easier to do with a dedicated PCIE2.0 to USB3.0 controller.
Only thing giving me shit is the audio emulation, yet to figure out how to stop it from fucking up and crackling after playing certain games for a while, it is driving me nuts. Vive has its own DAC in the link box so I haven't had any audio issues with it.
Performance seems pretty good didn't noticed much of a difference compared to native but could fine tune it more for a little extra performance. Huge pages is the only major tweak left which I haven't figured out yet.

Use Windows for games and normalfag things, buy a cheap used notebook and Use Linux with your browser configurated and with extensions to browse websites like this and nobody never discover.

Give preference for Linux Distros based in Ubuntu who are better than Ubuntu like Linux Mint and some others, and choose the .iso based in MATE or LXDE that are more lightweight.
