Really, digital games should cost substantially less than physical even with tax. No manufacturing, no distribution. Just pennies per GB from a CDN. Instead they charge the same and pocket the difference. Oh, and your storage media that rapidly fills with digital purchases? That's your problem, cough up some more money to expand that, because they're too cheap to give you an adequate HDD with your $400 console.

Not really applicable to this Sony thing, as that's being done to comply with state and local tax codes. State and local taxes (sales tax, property tax) tend to generate a more direct benefit for taxpayers, such as road maintenance, schools, fire stations, police, and so forth.

I admit I don't really know who's responsible for maintaining telecom infrastructure. Taxes subsidized its original buildout, but I think telecoms generally do expansions like fiber themselves with municipal permitting and pass those costs to consumers and other companies who lease the lines. Which is also why fiber is generally only deployed in dense urban areas where subscriber fees will recoup costs within a short time frame.
