It's pretty much an anti-socialist, anti-EU phantasia told through a lacklustre medium. If it had been programmed with deeper gameplay I think it would have made more of an impact, but its story gets everything it wants to get across just fine.
I also think a lot of the fan-games miss the point. It could also be the fact that OFF in its very nature is a translated work and therefore sounds even more surreal to an Anglophone (kind of like how Japanese games and anime always sound so surreal when translated more literally), so when said Anglophones try to do the same thing without actually going through any sort of translation, it just sounds off heh

OFF is an incredible visual novel, but a very bland game.
The OST is great and I listen to some of its songs for pleasure. The aesthetics are nice and fit the themes of the game very well, and you can see lots of thought was put in the color palette, as simple as it is. I fucking loved the story and the way it's told, although I later found out the bits I liked the most were translation issues and misunderstandings, so I am not really sure about what to think about it; still quite the experience, anyway.
On the gameplay side, the puzzles were nice, although the floating cubes "numpad" got a bit tiring after a while. But the combat… it was so bland I ended up going auto-combat for everything but boss fights, and I just did it because I felt I had to go through them manually.
But it's free, so it's good in my book.

Not everything is about real world left vs right politics, user. In this case, OFF is, on an abstract level, about whether it's good to continue with something bad just because it used to be good, or nuke it to stop the suffering of everyone involved. On a more mundane level, it's a debate about euthanasia.

To be fair, I really don't think anything ought to be expected from standard RPG combat. It's basically just something to do in between dialogue, and I don't think there's anyway to pull it off well without changing the genre to something like a tactical RPG.

There's more meaning telling you that nobody cares because the game is ass, than any amount of theory you can throw out of your ass at people. None of your fan theories detract from anything I stated about the game.

It's not a fan theory, the creator himself has stated that's why he made the game. But you seem really convinced of yourself, so I won't bother responding anymore.

If the ATB gauge filled up 4x faster so you actually had to make decisions marginally quickly, it could be cool.
Instead, the ATB is actually a hinderance to the game because of how slowly it fills up. You're not making split-second decisions, you spent five seconds making a decision then wait another 5 seconds for the gauge to fill so you can actually do the thing.

Two things. First, irrelevant NPCs (the Elsens) were meant to be constantly "too scared to do anything on their own", hence the requirement for guardians. You can draw as many conclusions as you want from that (taking responsibilities for your actions, control over your own life, "free will", etc.)
Second, Mortis is closer to a SJW than you might think, but thankfully as far as I know, he never promoted this shit in his work. I stopped watching movies with him because it became impossible to even watch the dumbest flick without having a "deep social commentary on how thieves are oppressed". Hell, we were watched an interview of Jodie Foster (because we were told she could speak French without accent, which is true and quite amazing), and the moment she started talking about strong female characters (Starling in Silence of the Lambs), he started talking over her as loud as he could. He knew how fed up I was with Sarkeesian and her bullshit and I suspect he thought I would be upset to hear her talk about something that could be construed as feminist… /rant.

To be fair, there are parts in the game that purposefully make it seem like a character is talking to the player when they're talking to someone else.
In the true Pacifist ending, Flowey talks to Chara and asks him to let everyone enjoy their happy ending without resetting. At this point you may not even know Chara exists, so it can be taken as Flowey talking to the player.
In the Genocide ending, Chara talks to Frisk, but all the comments he makes feel like they're directed at the player. Some players may not even realize Frisk and Chara are different characters, or that both of them exist at the same time.

Which is why you're supposed to play both endings and why the "neutral" endings are basically indifferent to the player as a character.

But rest assured Mortis was disappointed with some parts of the game, especially the beginning, the insane amount of random encounters, and the "newest is always best" item system. I was never huge on RPGs to begin with so I really didn't care much for the gameplay. The most "RPG" games I played are Parasite Eve, Anachronox, Deus Ex/System Shock and Vagrant Story (which I never completed), and it was several years after OFF's initial release.

Like I said, he never really pushed this shit in the things he does (I used to write stories for really fucked up jokes and he would draw it, and neither of us was offended). Regarding Enoch, you can see him as a propaganda master, or you can think of him as a businessman trying to keep his team focused on making that sweet sweet sugar everyone is addicted to. Ghosts are a distraction.

Either way, think of the game as a catalyst: the story was written little pieces by little pieces, the interesting parts are not these pieces, but the missing path in-between, many people are coming up with their own conclusions (messages, what's the point of it all, what are each characters, etc). What's going on in your mind is probably most interesting that the game itself.

Not to mention the shit load of "knowing winks" the game makes at you throughout or the meta stuff like the game hud fuckery during some battles.

Except saving is a thing done in universe, going back and fixing your fuck ups is something caused by "determination" and it manifests as saves.
