I really like that they've actually experimented with the zelda formula a bit for this one. It really feels like they have taken their cues from zelda 1, rather than ALttP like every other 3d Zelda.
In saying that, I really hate the weapon degradation. It just straight up sucks. It's especially offensive to me when you pick up one of the champions relics, hundred year old artefacts from hyrule's golden age, and they break in 3 fights. You go back to whoever gave them to you, tell them it was broken and they're like; "Oh, you broke that priceless cultural artefact from our people's hero? No biggie, I can make another one if you give me 3 flint and a diamond."
It's also really annoying to find some great secret in the game, like the top of that snowy mountain for example, and be rewarded with a weapon that doesn't even last you the trip back down the mountain. Its shit.
I really like that the boss battles are actual battles again instead of glorified puzzles. Fighting the boss inside the gerudo dungeon was fucking great.
The "dungeons" also suck. They feel way too short. I've only done the gerudo and zora ones so far, but I finished both of them in like 15 minutes. The Zora one was particularly bad, because at least the gerudo one had you go off and do a mini dungeon beforehand. The Zoras just make you walk up a mountain and dive back down.
I'm dissapointed that there are no items, and it's pretty shitty that you don't get any more powerups for your slate after the first hour of the game. I understand that they wanted you to be able to do any dungeon in any order so they left out any times that would gate you, but I still think they could have put in a few. The grappling hook would have been a really nice addition.
The horses also suck. I have no motivation to take my horses anywhere. It can't climb mountains, and since the whole of hyrule is fucking littered with them, there's no point in taking the horse anywhere.
The game is also just too big. Too much time is spent walking from place to place with nothing interesting in between. I think they could have easily halved the size of the worldmap without making any meaningful cuts to the experience.
And I can't not mention the voice acting. What the hell were they thinking? It's the first mainline zelda game with voice acting, and everyone is going to be comparing it with the CDI games. You would think that they would go all out and fucking nail it; why would they do such a shitty job of it? I think the only voicework that I haven't hated so far is the Zora Prince. The worst by far is Zelda, and she talks the most. The old people are also particularly shitty. It sounds like a 20-something putting on an old person voice, rather than a convincing old person talking. Thankfully, the voice acting seems pretty sparse so far. In fact, if the actual voices weren't so shit, I would say that the voice acting has actually been implemented pretty well.
There are secrets everywhere, but the problems is that all the rewards are worthless. Since you can only get spirit orbs from shrines, and the only way to get pieces of heart or more stamina is by trading spirit orbs, there's no reason to do anything other than glide from shrine to shrine, with brief forays into mountain/tower climbing to gain more altitude and spot more shrines. There are also koroks that give seeds, but I don't know what do do with them. I have about 40 just sitting in my inventory.
Dragon's Dogma did everything better except combat. DDs combat was shit. It presented itself as, and played like, an action game when it was actually more about stats then player input. The best way to beat the game is to grind, rather than actually gitting-gud.
