Other than that, the industry has gone in a completely different direction than what suits my tastes, so there is very little incentive to buy anything. I saw franchises like Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect being born and die, and not give a single fuck about them in the slightest, despite being some of the most popular franchises of their time. Nothing about them appeal to me. I'm old enough to remember the casualization of the sixth generation of consoles and found games that I liked like Thief, Deus Ex, and even fucking Mario getting casualized for a new generation. These last two generations I'm seeing Thief, Deus Ex, Mario, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Doom, and shit nobody cared about for 15 years like Shadow Warrior and Syndicate get rebranded and casualized. They don't make games for people like me very often anymore. This year, I bought Nioh, and I don't know of anything else coming out this year that interests me. I think Bloodborne 2 comes out during the holiday season, but I'm not sure. I'll never see another Ganbare Goemon game. Amplitude Studios is the team that made Endless Legend, Endless Space and a few other games. It has been quite sucessfull and the games they made are not only very good but even well liked here in Holla Forums.
But because of that sucess, at a certain point they'll be "too rich" and thus you shouldn't buy anything from them ever again because "they don't need your money anymore", despite all the games they made in the past and regardless of the quality of what they do next.

Even more funny is the exact oposite where I'm fairly sure some people play games like arena shooters or STALKER or even Deus Ex because they are sacred cows on Holla Forums.
Nothing wrong with those games, they are all quite good and very fun if you happen to like them, but sometimes I think some people force themselves to play those games for a matter of status quo, to be able to say they actually played them, even if they don't find them fun.
You can see lots of these guys in the respective threads, saying they "just don't get it, how can you find this fun?"

What games you play should be decided strictly for one factor: how fun they are for you. Everything else is detrimental to that goal.
What games you pay for should be decided strictly by their quality and the promise that the company will work more on them or make new, better ones in the future.

If publishers/devs can fix the price point and zero demo problems, I predict piracy would drop through the floor, or at least reach a point where it would be negligible.

However do consider that several companies throw the first stone in the form of DRM, shitty DLC practices or whatever other complaint is usually hurdled.
The moment they do that, they lose any argument about piracy.

Just like trust, this is a matter of being the better person. A company should not assume their clients are thieves or idiots that will fork over 100$ for a full game or any other bullshit. They should do their job, do it well and then expect a just reward. At this point, it's on the customer to be civil and polite, buying the game if they like it and agree with the price or not buying it otherwise.

Specifically for what the players can do, it's simple: you support the companies that do the least damage, preferably none. If there's two similar games in the market but one was released with pre-order bonus, buy the other one. Show the companies that these practices will not be allowed and will cost them money, not make them more. Foster honest competition between them to make better products, not better marketing campaigns. Play and talk about the games you like and pay for the ones that the company clearly loves as well. That's it.

I finish about 50 a year. There are so many games from so many platforms you have an endless buffet. In terms of new games I usually purchase between 5 and 10. Bought Resident Evil 7 and Forza Horizon 3 this year so far (Gravity Rush 2 is on the list). Absolutely fantastic games both of them, even if Forza relies a little too on the "software as a service" model the game is so fucking good I don't even like western racing games.

Emulators are a G-Dsend, not just because of their entire library but because you can even frameskip and play many old games much faster than usual. I can't possibly imagine myself playing legit Grandia for instance. I also wouldn't know some of the franchises I play today without trying the previous ones like the entire Harvest Moon and Rune Factory series.

I personnaly love seeing different RTS games that try something different than cloning AoE just to see new types of gameplay. KOHAN was the last one I tried, didn't liked and don't consider it a good game, but it was neat to see a different twist on how RTS could work, for instance.

1) I don't feel that games are as bad as people make them out to be, the software industry is a billion dollar industry for a reason. Games are getting better, cynicism and disliking the new direction for games is on you. Further, there's so many games coming out that if you only pay attention to the AAA, it's just like modern music, you're only scratching the proverbial surface of the software industry. People work on software all the time and make new stuff, it's up to you to find it, not for it to come looking for you.

2) Spending money on video games has a few benefits, one being that I can play online, I can play the latest updates right away, and I don't have to jump through hoops trying to find old versions to play on.

3) I'm no more a capitalist than I am a corporate whore, I'm just a person who understands that you pay money for services rendered. If the service I receive is a piece of software, then so be it.

Games have always been a product, but they're also a hobby to which I enjoy. What has changed is that I'm no longer inclined to buy physical mediums for the products to which I use, except in the random occasion of a special edition or special item I might want from said collector's edition. Space is a commodity and I am not a rich enough person to just buy another house to accommodate my collection should it outgrow my current living conditions.
