It's just a shitty remake of the creator's previous RPG Maker game, Super Lesbian Horse RPG. The developer threw a gigantic bitchfit because the only brony gaming website that mattered gave his game a 5 or 6/10 (should have been much lower) for the decent soundtrack and some okay sprites even though the jokes and social justice references were terrible.

Get an exceptional artist and make decently drawn sprites (high res or vector, no pixilation or faux pixel art what so ever)?

Or just abandon it for 10 years (which is prob how long it'd take you to learn and make it anyhow)

Either because you've made a good story, given them side quests, or your combat tickles the autism just right.

Though in my mind, you shouldn't need to grind. As long as you never run from enemies, you should be high enough level to beat the boss by specific strategies (and not just context sensitive stuff. Like being able to knock over a pillar onto it, or trick it into drinking poison wine you made in another part of the dungeon).

Honestly that counts as grinding for me, because unless the game forces you to think tactically for every fight then you make the player think, 'oh I better just grind some more to get more X' be it levels or that new weapon/armor in the shop. Or at least restrict the leveling system that it's not productive doing that shit, like the SMT with it's merging system.

Aaaaah, I see. So actually make every battle a challenge, rather than a different flavor of "hit it until it dies".

It's sad most RPGs don't do that. Sure you might get that at first when you enter a new area, but your levels raise so quickly you can stomp over them by the end.

So- once you work out how to beat specific enemies, and specific combinations of enemies, how long until that gets boring?
"Use the same move" over and over is worse than "use these moves in this order for this guy" over and over- but how long until even that get's boring? Like 3 or 4 fights?

Well I like games that have a long 'hobo phase' you may of heard of these phrase being used to describe S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The concept is simple, it's the beginning phase of a game where the game forces you have to treat every resource you get as valuable and every enemy can kick your ass just like that. In cookie cutter JRPGs this is very short to nonexistent since you can just go rest in the local in or buy a shitload of potions.

A couple of games that come to mind are Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead though that's to be expected since that's just a survival game and Age of Decadence and it's sidequel Dungeon Rats. Though I did figure a way out to cheese the latter, which was satisfying, but doesn't really work in AoD.

I've never played that game. If all it ripped off was that enemies can be beaten with cunning and guile rather then leveling i wouldn't call it a ripoff. If it did the exact same puzzles as undertale had, which mainly involved using the right contextual command on the right enemies to make them stop fighting you, then i'd call it a ripoff. Given that it's a CRPG with a tactics bent, i'm going to go out on a limb and guess a lot of the puzzles of that game involve doing things like positioning, like fighting a melee character with bows standing where he can't get you, that kind of thing?

The other these guys made is a more traditional CRPG with the same setting, Age of Decadence , only you can't form a party which makes the chance of you getting your ass killed by 3 peasant tier plebs likely if you don't have the proper build. Like seriously most of strategy I used in Dungeon Rats are fucking useless in AoD because they rely on at least two people in a single turn.

Yeah, i'd dispute that a lot. If a game needs grinding to make an impossible feat doable, it's badly designed. That being said, grinding can give you a deeper insight into a game's mechanics that wasn't apparent before, but that's still an iffy area. To take an example out of nowhere, Mother 3 has a combo system based on rhythmically tapping the attack button in time with the music. There's also a bestiary, which allows you to fight any enemy you fought previously without risk of dying. If you went into that bestiary and learn all the rhythms to every songs so well you could tap them off by heart, that's a kind of grinding. There's nowhere in the game where it's necessary or even useful to use, but it's there. If it was nessecary to progress in the game, i'd say it was a bad mechanic, but in the state it's in right now its just kinda there.

My point with all that rambling is that there's grinding and there's grinding. If you're grinding to learn the mechanics, allocate your stats more efficiently, learn how the lay of the land effects the way you play the game, that's okay. If you're grinding to get those last few experience points needed to level up and suddenly be good enough to beat the game, that's bad grinding and should never be acceptable in any game.

Its a run of the mill rpg maker game that to its credit, has a unique art style as opposed to the stock one that comes with the bloody thing.

Its gameplay is a standard jrpg, (i.e the white nose of gaming) and its appeal sits entirely on its aesthetics which are visually uninteresting. But not offensive to any extreme.

White noise describes this game perfectly. Nothing to give a fuck about, but nothing to pissed about either.

Throwing a 5-10 price tag and the game an't gonna sell well at all.

I just want to state the hype around undertale came from the demo not the because of the tumblr shit in the full game. People were constantly making threads about the demo for months, the demo was self aware and recognized that you killed the goat even after you played it again and saved her. If the full game delivered the same quality as the demo it would be no surprise that it would become a hit. it did. Even if you hated the humor and writing of undertale it's very clear this piece of shit is missing this 'depth' as well it's 'quirky humor'.

It didn't. Oneshot did more of what undertale's demo did, with it manipulating things outside of the game. Things like "crashing" the game and messing with a handful of in-game numbers isn't much of anything.

I'm not trying to downplay anything. It really didn't go as far as it did in the demo. Go replay it and see how it interacted with the instruction manual that came with it. That, compared to some in-game tricks isn't much by comparison and so it didn't deliver on what the demo promised in full.
And the autism of generals is by no means a reliable measure of a game's quality. It's a pretty safe bet that there's still a katawa shoujo general going and that game absolutely has next to nothing going for it beyond the basic story.

The games are focused around strategic combat, and the fights with minions between each boss or miniboss give the player an idea of what a "base" fight is like. If every fight were a context-specific series of prompts rather than a fight, you'd end up with memetail because your characters' stats would be meaningless. I appreciate wanting a game to involve the characters in its world, but I don't get how playing the game (that is, fighting each enemy you encounter once and not going back unnecessarily) counts as grinding.
