Get into programming if you haven't already. Try CGI programming. it's easy as fuck, can be done in anything from Assembly upwards and results in cool web pages without the bloat of modern web dev.

The trick is to pick up on basic ideas in programming. Variables, arrays, loops, conditions and the other basic stuff. Whatever language you choose those will always be relevant.

Well, I cant speak for gentoo, but I have done many many Arch installs, including a BIOS RAID install (which makes a normal arch install look like cake)
And I know sometimes the directions can be hard to follow at first, but if you skip or do a single step your own way, it probably wont work properly.

It's an operating system. It's job is to get out your way and let you do your job. Some people find it easier with distros like Gentoo and Slackware, and they have their use cases. Distros like Ubuntu, Mint and other simple ones are made for general use, and they do that just fine.
For a car analogy, Ubuntu is to a car what Gentoo is to a tractor. Tractors are cool, and you can do all sorts of neat stuff with them, but they aren't any better at getting you from A to B.

What error are you getting on your bootloader?

Are you using GRUB? is it legacy GRUB or UEFI?

Im guessing if its bootloader its simply not booting properly?

how you install your bootloader depends upon if you are using legacy BIOS or UEFI. Most newer computers are UEFI. UEFI bootloaders require a couple of extra steps. Are you UEFI?

Nah bro, I had to resort to using a UEFI stub because the GRUB installer wouldn't work because it said /boot didn't look like an EFI partition. Then I tried backing up my kernel and gentoo in a tar and then reformatting with an EF00 partition along with a regular gentoo partition.

Still got same error in the end, and I couldn't even install the bootmgr in chroot

Anyways, I know your installing Gentoo, but the GRUB install process is the same regardless, im going to give you some arch documentation, it may help more than me saying what to do, because you are actually infront of the machine and can see what is and isnt needed:

And im sorry, I wish I could tell you exactly what to do, but UEFI is more complicated than legacy boot. I dont want to give you wrong information and screw up what you have already done.

The other option is to go into BIOS and disable UEFI altgether, so-called Legacy Boot mode. This will VERY MUCH simplify the bootloader installation process.

If I switch everything to UEFI then the bios just shuts me out of my drives until I go back and change it. I'll try it with legacy though.

yes, for a UEFI install to work properly the machine must be live-booted with UEFI already enabled. This is a security feature of UEFI.

If you attempt a UEFI install on a legacy BIOS, and then later enable UEFI… it will fail.
