Demoman's design and backstory is pretty clever. Instead of being your typical black stereotype, they make him as unusual as possible.

You seriously can't make a black character without people thinking there's racism behind the decisions, so you have to dismantle the very being of blackness, while still making his skin color black. This way, Valve dodged any "WTF DAS RAYCIS" comments while keeping an original character in the game without much controversy.

It's funny, really. You can make stereotyped characters of Russkies, Rritbongs, Americans and no one will bat an eye, but use the same treatment on a black character and you get crucified. Are the consumers racist for spotting black stereotypes in media, or is the developer racist for building on what's already there?

I'm quite sure they first had designed the whole cast until someone noticed that they have no black characters so they just turned one of them black for the sake of diversity.

Could be, but Valve used to be the kind of company that overanalyzed and studied every little detail they put in their games. You can find this kind of planning in the very fabric of their HL games and when you go through their developer commentaries, you can see that they are very subtle and manipulative in a good way, with stuff like naturally bringing stuff to the players attention without forcing them to look, making gameplay breaks by having dialog in between and it is all done in a way that leaves the player feeling in control of his game experience. they probably made Demo black, but then realized that people would freak out were they to make him a typical black stereotype.

But you see, they wouldn't be able to get off their scooters to do anything about it. :^)

I'd play it, if only for people to stop walking on eggshells when it comes to race and also to realize that a game can be good, no matter the content. This would take the power out of the words and the stereotypes, and would lead to people being less triggered all the time.

To be completely honest TF2 is one of the most diverse games out there without being politicized one bit. It's not diverse for the sake of diversity, it's diverse because all of these characters are from unique nationalities that are also insanely well developed characters that benefit greatly from their origins. More games should do this. Not for the sake of appeasing SJWs but for the sake of making more interesting characters.

An ambiguous figure that may or may not be a female. Suffers from schizophrenia and ignites it's enemies when they least expect it.

If TF2 was released today as it was in 2007, I think it would be a good if somewhat flawed shooter that at least doesn't nickle and dime people for content.

If it was released as it is today then I'd call it another shit F2P game that prioritizes monetization and bloating their game with pointless fluff over actual balance and gameplay, but at least it's actually free and not sold on store shelves.

At least TF2 didn't go full-on virtue-signaling like Overwatch. It's okay that they did it, but people get so upset if you imply that they do cater to SJW's and normalfags, and that Tracer being gay adds nothing except more PR from thirsty journalists. TF2 had women, yes, but Overwatch specializes in back-patting and apolgists for everything negative about the game. There are way bigger problems to Overwatch than Tracer being lesbian, which is why I never understood how hard it was for people to admit "Yeah, it didn't really add anything, and it did win Blizzard a ton of free press." The way I see it, if DoA3 can use virtue signaling to market their softcore mediocrity to the anti-censorship crowd, then it shouldn't be a surprise that Blizzard would ride whatever media momentum they could get too.

It's strange how even Overwatch players (at least from my experience) agree that it wasn't worth GOTY. This only could have happened in 2016, where we had just about no games this year. The best it had to go against was Uncharted 4 and Doom, both average entries trying to live up to its reputation. I'm sorry, there's way too much broken, imbalanced and missing for me to jump on board, let alone calling it the best of the year.

Doom isnt really my type of game but its the one game from 2016 where people had very few bad things to say about it.

It wasnt trying to be something it wasnt so even the edgelords who score every modern game badly were not too harsh on it.

Doom should have won that easily.

Uncharted has no reputation and has never been anything resembling a good, or even a mediocre game. it's just shit all around.
